What's an incredibly petty reason you would refuse to date someone, even if everything else about them was perfect?

Poor spelling
I feel terribly shallow for this but I AM an editor so…

This was always a huge pet peeve of mine! Joke’s on me though because my best friend and my partner are both dyslexic 😭 I can’t be too annoyed by it because it’s a legit disability, but neither of them can spell worth a shit. Send help!

I can absolutely understand this. I was a straight A student in language arts of all types. I love writing and even with my own writing I am so critical.

However, I dated this guy that I adored. Truly wonderful in so many ways, but I was young and at the time perhaps a little pretentious. I remember when I broke up with him thinking that his writing style was one of the reasons.

We recently reconnected (ten years later) and I remember thinking to myself before texting him… “ I really hope that he still, at least somewhat, writes the same way.”

Mostly because it was genuine, and it was just so true to how I knew him as a person. Also, I never question if he’s using AI or chat or whatever, because his errors consist of the types of things AI seeks to fix. They’re so silly but I genuinely find them incredibly endearing.

Sorry to go off on a little tangent there. Just a similar type of reaction with an unexpected turn.

I’m so curious, what are some of the things he would write?

Just a whole plethora of silly stuff. Making something a proper noun that shouldn’t be. Using the wrong homonym—that’s a classic of his. His spelling and punctuation are great. His grammar is awful. But, it’s him and it’s authentic so I truly love it.

I’m not an editor but I’m like this, too. It’s one thing if they accidentally use the wrong “there/their/they’re” on occasion, but if it’s consistent, I’m out. If they use a lot of those weird abbreviations (lmk, omw, idk, etc) or an intense amount of emojis, no thanks.

Aw my boyfriend who I love is a bit of a dumb dumb with his there’s and I will say it concerned me but I liked him too much to ever drop him for that. I think that I’d have to be already really not feeling it to dump someone for it

So do you give them a spelling bee on your first date to weed them out quick

So, no dyslexics then.

This haha- I’m a good speller and I’ve always been annoyed by bad spelling. Now my bestie and my boyfriend are dyslexic and both suck at spelling. I’m patient with them of course, but it feels like the universe is playing a prank on me 😂

I'm trying to be an editor, but I'll never claim that spelling is one of my strong suits.

Well… it’s right up there on the job requirements list.

It's a given that, obviously, you need to know how to spell to some degree, but it's not the main focus for every type of editing job. Even as editors, we still get to use dictionaries and spellcheckers.

Not necessarily. Stylistic, structural, and/or developmental editing all happen long before you really need to worry about spelling.

I’m sorry but if you don’t know the difference between you’re, your and their, there ect you need to go back to grade school
