The consciousness of oneself when in public, or even traveling on the bus or train to not disturb those around you. I travelled from Vienna to Bratislava and there were long stretches of absolute silence. People speak with soft voices. It’s wonderful.

I wish we had that in Paris. Instead we have jerks watching videos on their phones in the metro.

Ugg, London too. What happened that people lost all sense of how to behave in public? I had to ask a guy to turn it down on the bus today, he was listening to fucking doorbells, like different styles, loud. Just behave ffs.

I lived in london maybe 10 years ago. I remember very clearly a teenager asshole (chav/ roadman type of shithead) was listening to music at full blast from his phone on the bus, holding it up near his head. A guy in the seat behind him asked him politely to turn it off, so the teenager told him to fuck off.

So the guy stood up to his full height of maybe 6ft 5 and snatched the phone out of his hand before popping it out the open window slot.

You could tell the kid had initially wanted to start something but thought better of it when he clocked that it was Shrek that took his phone off him.

Chucking a rude person’s phone out the window of a moving bus that is literally a fantasy of mine

Similar story from my FIL in Australia in the 70s. Train carriages had openable doors (and no airconditioning). A guy was listening loudly to his large music box on the floor and was asked to turn it down.
He refused and the guy stood up and did one big kick - out the door it went!

It's not like headphones are even expensive. You can easily fit wired earbuds in your pocket and they never run out of batteries.
