Ugly is such a fucked up term to use to describe someone. I don’t even think like that personally anymore.
Life is too short and limited to diminish someone else’s experience of it by making them feel bad. Every decent person deserves to be appreciated.

I once went to a small church in which there was a guy the same age as me who was single. I had been single for about 15 years. I had a close friend who was 11 years younger than me who just got dumped a day before having another friend in the church reach out to the guy's family for her to see if he would be interested. The guy's family reportedly said, "Single?! In this church?! Who is around his age who's single?! Everyone is married!"

Babies cry when they see you or kids tell you, they’re very honest. I was working at an amusement park when I was 17-18 and sitting on a park bench on my break. This little girl with her Dad is sitting next to me, and unprompted says “you look pretty in your name tag photo, but not right now”. Her dad corrected her and said “hey that’s not nice!”. I was already having a super shitty day and went into the restroom stall and cried lmfao

When a guy who was like a brother to me didn’t believe another guy would sexual assault me because there were prettier women there that night.
When my husband admitted he’s never been attracted to me. (Says a lot about my personality though, huh?)
When I’m so used to not being treated like other women, I go to pay the cover fee on Lady’s night at a club because I know I’m not bringing the kind of value to the club those nights are intended for.

This happened to me, too. Guy took a bet to take me to the spring dance in Jr high. I was so excited, i went and got a dress and got my hair cut, my mom took pictures of us my the fireplace before we left, did the corsage/bootineer thing the whole 9. Danced together, kissed once at the end of the night. That was Friday night.
Monday morning getting off the bus, didn't even get off the curb before he came up to me, broke up with me and walked away with another girl that had much larger bombuses than I did.
I kinda got misty right now remembering that.
Ive never been cat called. Never asked out, I've done the asking. A man actually said to me "you're not pretty enough to date" and also said "don't you think after being single for so long, it's like God telling you your genes don't deserve to move on?"
Ooh and I've had 2 boyfriends in the last 10 years, and both of them committed suicide. I KNOW im a HORRIBLE person, so ugly and unlovable that just by being myself I drive men to suicide. Not pretty enough for them to look the other way or stick around, and my personality sucks so bad they'd rather die than give me a chance much less a normal break up.
I'm sorry for trauma dumping. I should go.

People say that to me whenever I'm not wearing makeup and I'm fairly conventionally attractive. I honestly believe most men and some women are just makeup blind. Especially when you see what they think "beautiful with no makeup" looks like to men. It's a full beat with a nude lip.
I've honestly have just started saying it to their face. They never really know what to say.
"You look tired/sick today."
"Thanks for noticing Jim but I'm just not wearing makeup."

u/No_Associate_4878 3h ago
There are many, many people who are not attractive, but it's a pretty small percentage of the population that have truly ugly faces to the point that they make most people feel uncomfortable. The vast majority of people who think they are ugly are just not particularly attractive. Truly physically ugly people are usually also sloppy and lack of spark of intelligence in their eyes. People who just have conventionally unattractive facial features but are smart and interesting and can afford to be well groomed are usually able to make themselves look better through hairstyle, makeup and, most importantly, personality.
→ More replies (1)105
u/No_Associate_4878 3h ago
I'm no expert in this, but I think there are evolutionary reasons we find certain kinds of faces ugly. Our subconscious interprets really nasty acne as a sign of ill health for example, as it looks a lot like the effects of some bad diseases. Very disfigured facial features are subconsciously interpreted as signs of genetic defects. So out reactions of disgust have probably developed over thousands of years to avoid reproducing with people who look like their DNA should not be passed down. These evolutionary biases combine with culture to give far too many advantages to people considered beautiful and too few to people who aren't.
31
u/Boars-of-Canada 2h ago
I wonder how long it will take evolution on the mass of people to actually find post plastic surgery faces ugly. There are definitly health concerns but the fact that those people also have money(stability) and social status could make them attractive from an evolutionary point of view. Those things take a long time though.
I find them hidious and I really can't understand why so many people like things like filled lips and such.
5
u/piglungz 1h ago
Outside of the people who get/want those procedures, I think the majority of people already do find it ugly. A lot of minor plastic surgery is so subtle it isn’t noticeable, but I don’t think I know anyone in my personal life who isn’t disgusted by it when it’s obvious.

Another theory is that faces that look off trigger our built-in sense of other human species from long ago. Looks it up its actually a real theory ("uncanny valley"). And it didn't stop us from breeding with Neandarthals.
The uncanny valley is a psychological and aesthetic hypothesis predicting that as an object or entity's human likeness increases, a viewer's emotional affinity toward it rises—until it approaches near-total realism, at which point affinity drops sharply into a feeling of revulsion, eeriness, or fear. [1, 2]
When applied to human evolution, scientists propose that this eerie reaction is not an accidental quirk, but an ancient, hardwired survival reflex

u/ewest 3h ago
I don't have a funny quip like the other comments here but I'll just say there's a more subtle thing that happens to unattractive people, whether it's 'ugliness' or being overweight or what have you. In groups, people gravitate towards people other than you. They may not be mean and may even be polite or pleasant, but more and more the conversation and attention will center on other people, even if they're not interesting or all that attractive themselves.
I read once that a telltale sign of whether someone likes you or feels close to you (platonically, romantically, or otherwise) is in a group, if someone makes a joke, even if it wasn't yours, they will look at you as they laugh to see if you're laughing too, or to share in the laugh with you. The inverse applies to someone who isn't attractive or charismatic.

This can also happen if you are shy or strange or too talkative or rude, etc. Honestly, so many things can cause this apart from being extremely unattractive and generally even if you ARE extremely unattractive, if your personality is pleasing you may have a crowd.
31
u/GalaxyPowderedCat 3h ago
This. Many people have told me that I look so pretty, other girls have told me I have natural soft skin and long eyelashes but nobody likes me for my lack of social skills.
People can really ignore/mock you if you don't check all the boxes in everything...

If face ID keeps saying "face not found" when you try to set it up, then it's game over.
In all seriousness I just assume I'm horrifically ugly because I've never been in a relationship or asked out. Granted I'm a guy, and women don't tend to outright ask guys out, but I feel like the fact that I could count the number of times it's happened on one hand even if I were a double amputee kinda leads to me make conclusions. I'm in good shape and whatnot, so I assume I must just be ugly. Never actually been called ugly, but who the hell would actually say that to someone lol.

Parents become embarrassed when their children stare at you
3
u/Bob-Bhlabla-esq 2h ago
Tbf, I have 3 kids and you never know what the fuck is going to come out of their mouths, so you do get the feeling a comment is coming if they are staring at someone.
Comments are generally innocent, but to adults they come off as harsh. It could be "Why is that man buying soooooo much food?" and the customer could be legit shopping for a party, but if you've ever battled your weight you feel that comment a lot more (trust me lol).
The parent embarrassment is not because of you it's because they'll seriously say anything... "It smells like a fart in here!" and we are human and not fast enough to dive on them!
I'm ugly, and my little kids have innocently said enough to me, stuff I already knew, but it still sucks.

They think they're incels because they have skinny wrists or whatever cope they've dreamed up this week when the simple truth is that they've put all of their self worth into getting a super hot girlfriend and refuse to even consider someone as average as they are. It's just exhausting to be around the constant whining and entitlement so the average looking girls and the less than average girls get repelled too.
