General Why do SG landlords list the master bedroom as 'studio apartment'

Damn annoying looking to rent a studio, meaning standalone apartment once you open the door it's outside. Idiot landlords here like to label the master bedroom of an apartment as a studio, just wasting everyone's time

Tourist/non-local Question 27-year-old single American woman with no dependents, recently offered an Employment Pass in Singapore. Have a few questions, thank you in advance!

Hello! So the header describes my situation pretty much, but I'm a 27F from the US. Apologies if I sound ignorant, I'm here to learn. These are my main questions about Singapore:

  1. How is dating there? Are people generally open to dating foreigners? Do guys tend to pay for dates (normal in the US), or is it more 50/50? Are most people meeting in real life or through apps now?

  2. How socially conservative is the culture? I know drugs are a big no there, but are most people okay with LGBT, crop tops, tattoos, etc.? Does religion have a big impact on the culture? I don't personally have tattoos and I'm not religious, I'm just trying to see what the vibe is.

  3. How easy or hard is it to make friends, especially as a transplant?

  4. Is becoming a Permanent Resident reasonably attainable? I'm obviously not yet sure I'd stay if I did go, but I'm approaching settle-down age (especially if I get into a relationship) so it's an option I'd like to have.

  5. What is the work culture like, and how might it be different from the US? I would be working at a large engineering firm.

  6. I know English is common in Singapore, but is it common enough that I wouldn't need to know any Chinese at all? I would try to learn of course, but currently I only speak English.

  7. Given how expensive cars are, is the public transit is good enough that I wouldn't need a car?

  8. What would you say the minimum salary is for a decent standard of living there?

  9. What is the everyday fashion like?

  10. Is there anything else I should know or consider while I'm deciding?

Thank you in advance!

General Anyone able to read and translate this writing found outside my sister’s resale flat?

Post image
79 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I visited my sister’s resale flat, which she purchased in June 2026. The renovation was completed recently, and today I noticed some writing outside her unit.

Does anyone know how to read and translate it? What could it mean, and what should we do about it?

Since we don’t understand what it says, we’re worried that it might be related to the previous owner or something else. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

General Shipping package from SG 🇸🇬 -> AUS 🇦🇺

Hello! I’ll be studying overseas in Melbourne for half a year. I was thinking of bringing my PC along as I use it for work + games frequently. I checked out SingPost rates and a one way shipment is about $200+ for sea shipping.

I estimate the weight of the PC to be about 13~KG. Is it possible to just check in the PC in a large luggage or have it as a carry on to save on $$? Please advice!

edit: forgot to mention I am in design/management

General Anyone using Google Streamer 4K?

Thinking of getting one as my Prism TV (yes I know - I bought the TV before learning it was not a good brand) is starting to lag and having problems updating.

Am figuring out whether I can adress the issue using a Google Streamer 4K rather than getting a new TV (more expensive, don't really have the money for it). But it seems like the Google Streamer isn't sold physically in singapore which makes me think it is really used all that much here.

Hence would like to ask if there's anyone using Google Streamer 4K here and what are your thoughts on it (better off buying new TV)? Also where did you get yours from?

TIA - tech noob here, I've watched some reviews online but would like to get some on the ground sensing too

General Entitled Elderly on MRT rides???

I dont know if i am unlucky or elderly in SG are just pure entitled. I usually do not sit during my train rides as I prefer to stand by habit. When i do sit its usually because i am sick or feeling unwell.

Just recently I had an encounter where an elderly tapped on my shoulder and I happened to sit at the priority seat because I was feeling nauseous. I got up and there wasn’t even a thank you.

Are we spoiling them too much?

The problem is not giving up the seat, but the sense of entitlement from them and taking it for granted. Is this the culture we are breeding?

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Mental health records and working in the public sector as a psychologist.

Ive asked this before and many people told me that my mental health conditions will not be known to employers, but today i heard someone tell me he cant find a job because of a psychological diagnosis he had before. He said that he went to apply for a childcare job and they hired him at first but afterwards he was fired because the employer found out about the record somehow.

It suddenly made me very worried because im currently in university studying psychology and i know to work in the public hospital or with vulnerable people employers will be worried if someone with a pas mental health record works for them.

Im veeerrry worried because if i cant get hired in a public hospital there isnt much i can do with my degree meaning i wasted money and time. I asked this before and even though the replies were reassuring today what i was told kind of made me worry again.

Anyone here works as a doctor, nurse, psychologist etc or works with vulnerable populations and also has a mental health record?? Did any of you get found out? Did anyone not declare and never got found out?

Tourist/non-local Question What Singaporean books should I read? 🇸🇬 📚

Olá everyone! I’m a bookworm from Portugal (🇵🇹) and I love reading books from other countries. Seeing as Singapore has a lot of anglophone literature, I wanted to ask you guys which anglophone Singaporean books, either fiction or non-fiction, I should read.

I like historical fiction, YA, fantasy, family sagas, and I do NOT like crime / mystery / whodunit books. I’m also interested in non-fiction.

I wish I could visit Singapore one day but it’s too far and expensive for me 😢

So I’ll have to travel through books like I always do.

Looking For Lessons/Coaches for adult chess learners?

I'm someone who has played chess on-and-off for some years now but I'm legitimately kind of bad at it still. I feel like I'd like some sort of lessons or coaching just to get some structure and/or repetitions.

Any recommendations for coaches, preferably those that do online lessons? I'm not looking to elomaxx, just to get better at something.

I wouldn't mind recommendations for social chess sessions also, but probably after several lessons.

General what is the "typical" educational pathway of someone in sg

sorry if this sounds out of touch but its been on my mind for a while,,,

i admit until very recently like this yr before I started listening to other relatives more and volunteered during june hols and talking to more ppl i used to be rather sheltered same w my friends for most ppl ik the route is psle>alevels>uni or o level stream before alevels. of course we know poly and ite exist but i nvr rlly thought of how ppl could like stop at diploma (srry ik how this sounds)

it shocked me that 40% of the sg student cohort only go to uni but ig the perception is skewed in some environments so it rarely occured to me ppl wouldnt want or cant go to uni but ig theres only so many seats in unis. and among this 40% i didnt know until recently that sutd sit and suss werent private,,, for some of my friends they dont even consider it a real uni because they take mostly poly students!!!

so for like a typical pathway do most parents want their kids to go to uni?? do most students aim for that

another qn is what happens if ur in like ite or normal tech or any sch where its not talked abt and want to go uni?? Are the teachers and the environment support u well or no

General Did i just get scammed by carousellmobile?

For context, I bought an iPhone 15 Pro from Carousellmobile around march this year, and recently, the battery has been acting very weird. Sometimes my phone turns itself off at random battery percentages, even at 50%, and when it turns back on, its suddenly at 10% and then dies within 3 minutes. I check the phone at MrMobile, and was told that the battery was actually not original despite what I was told. The listing says that "All devices are original and have never been tampered with or repaired", when it was in fact UNORIGINAL and HAD been TAMPERED WITH.
What can I do about this?

Looking For Indoor swimming in Singapore during the haze

Hi everyone!

My girlfriend and I will be visiting Singapore from Monday, and she absolutely loves swimming. We’re hoping to find somewhere she can swim while we’re there, but with the current haze, we’d prefer to avoid outdoor pools if possible. There from the 19th till the 2nd :)

I’ve been looking at the OCBC Aquatic Centre at Kallang, but I’m a bit confused about whether the pools are fully enclosed indoors or simply covered with open sides. Does anyone know what the setup is like, and whether public swimming is currently available? Cause I’ve heard that the outdoor pools are closed right?

Also, are there any other genuinely indoor swimming pools in or around central Singapore, ideally reasonably accessible from Orchard Road, where visitors can pay for a session? We’re just looking for somewhere to swim for around 30 minutes, rather than a hotel stay or swimming lessons.

Any local recommendations or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! And since we can’t really cancel the trip, any advice on what we can go and see will be great?

General What changed regarding your perspective in life and career after getting married?

Context is that I work in healthcare, and before getting married I was those siao on go to work by 6am and leave at 8pm kind.

But after getting married and staying with my wife, (really) planning for the future hit me like a truck - I always wanted to chase a career path which involved sacrificing lots of time away from work and family but after getting married I realised that what was important to me instead was able to spend time and see my wife as much as possible.

Hence I’m rethinking my career choices now as I’m worried that what I want to do might not give me the kind of future I want - just wanted to get some opinions and perspective on this and also others experiences - did u choose a career path you regret later?

General SG Redditors over 30, what’s a friendship you never thought you’d lose, but did?

Growing up, most of us had friends we thought would be around forever. The ones we spent almost every day with, shared our deepest secrets with, or imagined growing old alongside.

But somewhere along the way, life happens. Careers, relationships, marriage, children, or simply growing into different people.

For those in your 30s and beyond, was there a friendship you genuinely thought would last a lifetime, but somehow didn’t?

Did something happen that caused the friendship to end, or did you both just slowly drift apart?

Looking back, do you regret not doing more to keep that friendship alive, or have you made peace with how things turned out?

General Singaporeans aged 25–39: Why has our Skillsfuture credit not been topped up cince 2020?

Singaporeans aged 25 and above received an initial $500 SkillsFuture Credit. On 1 October 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we received another one-off $500 top-up. That was the last general top-up for our age group, and the additional $500 expired on 31 December 2025.

For those of us aged 25–39, who are also facing career uncertainty and the pressure to upgrade our skills, shouldn't we also be asking when our generation will receive further support?

Are we being overlooked when it comes to SkillsFuture funding? Should the Government consider another top-up for younger working adults?

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG What's it like working for NLB or NHB?

I'm an undergrad, probably looking to work in civil service. I enjoy learning about SG modern history, the construction of nat'l identity, and so on, so I'm curious about what it's like working for either NLB or NHB, in terms of job scope and WLB. Want to know if one might be better than the other, or if I should avoid both, or whatever it is any of you guys might know about both stat boards.

Tourist/non-local Question Moving from SG to KL with big luggage

Hey guys!

I am planning to move to KL from Singapore in the beginning of November, and I know that I can reach KL on bus or train from JB. However, I have a large luggage like one trolley bag, one big suitcase and one small, one big gym bag and backpack.

So has anyone traveled by bus or train to KL with same amount of luggage and what would be better choice for me to reach with, as I have some concerns that bus drivers of train staff may not let me on the vehicle with that much luggage.

And if you have any tips for this, please share

Thanks
