General How to avoid sweating in the morning after showering?

• Upvotes

1st time asking a question here - I like to shower in the morning because it freshens me up for the day, but I have a ~1km (15min) walk to the MRT station and by the time I get there, I am drenched in sweat. Even after a few stops in the mrt, I'll still have sweat droplets down my face.

Im a middle aged lady and dont wear singlet or an inner wear, so it becomes highly embarrassing when my back is obviously entirely wet. I also feel so icky which negates the freshness of having showered.

Fellow morning mrt commuters, what can I do?

No hate on people who don't shower in the morning please, im really looking for solutions

General Spending every weekend in my room all day. Do other Singaporeans do this as well?

I spent almost every weekend laying in bed for at least 20 hours inside my room to sleep or scroll on phone. I only get up to eat, exercise for half an hour and use the toilet / bathroom. The thought of going out to shopping centres or restaurants exhaust me especially given how crowded Singapore is and I dislike queuing. Does anyone else have the same weekend routine?

Edit: Also no hobbies when staying inside room, just sleep, doing nothing or doomscroll. No desire to play video games or watch shows. And every weekday after work is straight back to room and eat dinner inside room.

General Anytime Fitness is demanding nearly $1,000 after ignoring my membership-freeze &cancellation requests. What can I do?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to get some advice on how to handle this situation with Anytime Fitness in Singapore, as I'm honestly quite stressed and unsure of what to do next.

I signed a 12-month membership contract with Anytime Fitness when I was still employed. However, my circumstances changed, and due to school and personal situations, I was unable to secure another job. I eventually found myself unable to afford the $88 monthly membership fee, especially since it gets deducted on the 1st of every month.

Initially, I tried to manage the situation by pausing my membership whenever I couldn't afford the payments. However, there was a month when my membership wasn't frozen as requested, resulting in additional late fees. I was also told that my membership could be frozen for August, but this was never carried out despite my request.

I explained my financial difficulties to them and made it clear that I was willing to pay what I owed, provided we could work out some sort of reasonable payment arrangement. I wanted to settle the amount instead of letting it snowball into something I could never afford. Unfortunately, I received a generic response without any actual solution, and they never followed up with me afterwards.

The following month, I finally managed to set aside enough money to pay the full outstanding amount at that point, or slightly more. However, when I checked again, the amount owed had more than doubled. This was extremely frustrating because I had already asked them to freeze my membership. Had my request been properly processed, the amount accumulated would have been significantly lower.

When I questioned them about this, they claimed that they had contacted me but that I didn't respond. This is false, as I never received the follow-up they claimed to have sent. I had also explicitly asked them to pause my membership and, if possible, cancel it altogether, but these requests were seemingly ignored.

Throughout the entire process, I kept receiving generic, copy-and-pasted responses instead of meaningful communication or an actual solution. I understand that I signed a contract and have a responsibility to address my outstanding payments, but I genuinely tried to communicate with them and find a way to settle the amount.

The only time my request was acknowledged was to tell me I cannot cancel unless I fulfil their 1 out of 2 requirements and pay a additional $110

Now, I've received a pink demand letter from Anytime Fitness stating that I owe nearly $1,000, which must be paid within two weeks. I'm honestly quite stressed because the outstanding amount was previously only around $300-plus.

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who has experienced something similar.

My questions are:

  1. Has anyone successfully disputed accumulated gym membership fees or late charges with Anytime Fitness in Singapore?

  2. Can I dispute the additional charges if my membership-freeze requests were not processed as promised?

  3. Should I respond to the demand letter directly, and what should I say?

  4. Has anyone approached CASE over a similar gym membership dispute? Were they able to help negotiate a resolution?

  5. Is there anything specific I should do before the two-week deadline?

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated

Edited to add: i only signed cuz it was significantly closer to me than any other gym but I stopped going due to mental health issues affecting my life + the gym really didn't offer anything I wanted to use

2nd edit: signed in march, asked to pause up till june, wanted to pause July but couldn't so that was the start of the "debt" I told them i didn't have the money and will pay once can, near end july they mentioned it will go into bad debt so i asked for an extension or some payment plan but got met with a bluetick. In aug and sept they did not mentioned the amount owed or anything other than a checkup in August and silence till I texted them to let them know I had the money which then they just threw a $300 bill against me. It was the constant lack of communication and blueticking that made this even more frustrating cuz clearly they do want me to go into debt to earn more. Since the conversation in early sept they have never once contacted me or msg me to MENTION anything to me. Today I got served the pink letter in the mail.

General SG Redditors, when was the last time you felt genuinely happy with where you are in life?

It’s Monday again. Another week of work, responsibilities, bills, and the usual routine.

Sometimes I wonder how many of us are genuinely happy with the lives we’re living, and how many are simply going through the motions because that’s what adulthood has become.

We spend so much of our younger years chasing milestones. A good job, a decent salary, a house, marriage, kids, financial stability. But even after achieving some of these things, does that feeling of happiness actually last?

For those who’ve been adulting for a while, when was the last time you genuinely felt content with your life, without feeling like you needed to achieve or chase something else?

Was there a particular moment that made you feel that way, or are you still trying to figure it out?

General what would you do if you won $2.5M in TOTO?

i daydream about this a lot… yes i know the odds to win is unlikely but the dream keeps me going….. don’t judge. but just curious on how everyone would spend their money!

my husband and will definitely be sharing the amount.
we’d invest the 2M and let it grow (basically coastFIRE).
125K will go to my parents, 125K to his parents. 50K on a new car downpayment, 70K on a 6 month sabbatical. 100K to a high yield savings account acting as emergency funds. And 15K each for spending.

unfortunately to maintain our standard of living, we would still have to work… but the mindset would be different and that would be a huge relief. As we simply don’t need to save anymore- working would be more leisurely and being able to inflate our lifestyle (still within our means) without much worries would be great.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Working in London as a Singaporean

• Upvotes

Hi all, I’m currently studying in a UK Uni and received a job offer in London in the finance industry. I’m still in the recruitment loop for similar roles in SG. My long-term goal is to return to sg to start a family and take care of my parents perhaps within 10 years. My questions are:

  1. How difficult is the transition from London to Singapore since I won’t be able to build a network within sg?
  2. Is the EMEA experience valued for senior roles in Singapore or would it be more beneficial to gain APAC experience?
  3. Post-tax, exchange rate compensation in sg for similar roles is definitely higher and that’s before accounting for rent. If I want to maximise long-term career earnings, is it wiser to start in London or Singapore?

Could anyone who has made this transition share some insights or advice?

Long story short, They upfront tell you the plan include 100GB roaming to Malaysia/Indonesia/Thailand but after signing up only then you know the 100GB only valid for 7days per cycle after first activation.

Any alternative that doesnt have this 7days BS? So far i think only SImba but not sure on their signal etc.

Tourist/non-local Question Curious about Singapore’s work culture

I’m from Spain and will be visiting Singapore later this year for a work trip. I find a great difference in the habits of the Singaporeans vs the local Spaniards in my hometown. I’ve seen my Singapore counterparts pull long hours at work, so I’m getting some ideas about the general hustle culture.

I’m curious: are there people on the opposite end of the spectrum in Singapore? Underworked / paid to do little to nothing?

General LK ICT - Early outpro for single parent?

I have a primary school kid as a single parent, I am called up for a LK ICT of which I already attended the first day.

My boy was unwell, and went to the clinic earlier to find out he has influenza A with high fever (haze?)

I don't have help at home - will I be able to get early outpro and still clock LK ICT or is it forfeited?
I'll have to stay home to take care of him.

I had a question regarding Sea Corporate Labs. Anyone working for them can elaborate more on what exactly do teams under this work on? Do they mainly work on internal workplace products? Or also support other companies like Shopee and Garena?

Looking For How to toast like ya kun kaya toast

I’ve fallen in love w the kaya toast set from ya kun recently, and my dad like a true blue Singaporean started thinking about how to make it at home to save money. Kaya and butter and eggs are doable, but we got stuck on the toast and how they make it so damn crispy. Does anyone know what kind of bread and toaster that ya kun uses?

General I am jobless, my mother has stage 4 breast cancer, my father abandoned us, my sister is still studying, what to do?

For context, my family are PRs in Singapore. I recently just ORDed from NS. We are struggling to survive everyday as my allowance took a huge hit from around $846 to around $180.

My mother is only working a part time job that earns around $1.5k, and her age is starting to creep up on her, and my sister is currently studying in Poly while also working a part time job (noted that she is under the tuition grant scheme)

My father has decided that we aren't worth his time and effort and decided to take advantage of the fact that he fell down and broke his foot and hasn't recovered in 3 years, thus avoiding work altogether. Obviously, we weren't able to have a stable living place since the end of 2023.

My mother has tried everything, from working full shifts, asking friends and family for help, borrowing money, receiving assistance from Singapore Cancer Society, we even sold off some of my father's belongings.

I have been applying to a lot of jobs but most of them fail to go through, especially full time positions since I have to fulfill my Tuition Grant Bond Obligation. Is there anything else I can do? I don't want to go back to my home country where the quality of life is much worse than here. I plan to get my family(except father) Singapore Citizenships.

General How's life in Telok Kurau? Thinking of moving there, from west to east

Hi everyone! I'm currently staying in Lakeside and considering moving to Telok Kurau as my new workplace will be in East.

Recently viewed a place in Telok Kurau and quite liked the neighbourhood! It seems peaceful and has a nice vibe. But I'm still a little hesitant as l've been living in the West for quite some time.

The rental is pretty much the same, but my current room in Lakeside is actually bigger and comes with a balcony

For those living in Telok Kurau or nearby, how's life there? Is it convenient without a car? How's the food, public transport and overall neighbourhood?

Would love to hear the pros and cons, especially from anyone who has moved from the West to the East!

General Disclosure of dental charges under corporate insurance

Did a quick google search: Whether or not chargeable under the public rate or through corporate insurance, dental clinics are legally-obliged to disclose charges for any treatment provided prior to starting treatment.

However, upon enquiring with several dental clinics, I was told that for insurance cover, they don’t disclose charges, not before treatment, not even after treatment as an itemized bill. Most corporate dental plans are capped which means if you get overcharged, you easily hit your annual cap within one or two visits.

  1. How hasn’t this blown up as an issue?
  2. What is the likelihood that reporting these clinics to the authorities will resort in any sort of meaningful change?

Tourist/non-local Question Tourist with an interest in urban development

Hi all,

I’m visiting your beautiful city-state in a few weeks and am super excited to enjoy the culture and eat my way through Singapore. I’ve been fascinated by this place for a long time—for many reasons!—but one of the biggest interests for me is the rapid development of your country, especially given its small size, political harmony (compared to where I’m from, at least) and relatively short history of independence. In the nicest way possible, I’ve always sort of imagined Singapore to be similar to a real-life Cities: Skyline urban environment, where most everything is meticulously planned with a grand vision in mind before being developed with the full backing and resources of the state.

I was wondering if there are any museums/tours you would recommend that would allow me to learn more about the history and process of planning and politics in your city-state. I look at something like Japan’s G-Cans Project tours as an example — if I could do something similar with the water catchments, for example, that would be super interesting.

If my preconceptions are wrong please do let me know—otherwise, thank you in advance for your recommendations. Very excited to visit Singapore!

General Insurance Option for Aging Parents

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from those who may have been in a similar position.

Quick summary for the busy folks:

  • Parents are uninsured; I’ve built ~$250k net worth but worry one major medical event could derail my finances. They have hospitalization plan but my worry is for CI / ECI (i.e., cancer, etc.)
  • FA suggested ~10 years of term insurance, but it feels like a temporary fix.
  • Considering having them downsize their 4-room HDB eventually and use the surplus as a safety net.
  • Looking for advice from others in a similar situation on how you protected yourself financially and achieve peace of mind.

Full story:

My parents are currently uninsured as they did not maintain their insurance plans over the years. I’ve since started my career and built up a net worth of around $250k, but something that constantly weighs on me is knowing that we could be one major medical emergency away from significantly derailing everything I’ve built.

As I move forward in life, I want to understand how I can protect my own financial future while still being able to support my parents.

I’ve spoken to my FA, who suggested term insurance for each parent for perhaps the next 10 years, to protect these key wealth-building years. While I understand the logic, it still feels like a temporary bandage rather than a long-term solution.

I’ve also considered whether, after I eventually move out, my parents could sell their current 4-room HDB, downsize, and use the surplus as a financial/medical safety net. But again, that feels like an uncertain solution.

I find this weighs on me quite heavily because even when I achieve something in my career or finances, there’s always that thought of, “Okay, but this still doesn’t solve the bigger issue.”

For anyone who has faced something similar, how did you manage it and eventually find some peace of mind?

Thank you, and wishing everyone a good week ahead!

General Guys, Singapore police lets people off with a warning if it’s the suspect’s first time?

So recently my friend was punched by her stalker(which she has already reported a few times). An uncle helped apprehend the stalker and went to the police station. After investigation all the police let him of with a warning. Before this stalker find her at work place, follow till void deck. Follow to Indonesia and slapped her in the Grab, so i told her to take the driver’s number so can be witness. She say ya ya but never take. Realistically, is there anything police can do?

General Do people not move into the back of the bus anymore?

I haven't noticed this issue until maybe the past 1 year. Why are people crowding in the front and refusing to move in? Even young people are doing this. And it's worse when it's the rush hour bus and people are still not moving in when there's space in the back and people at the bus stop can't get on as a result. 💀 I feel like for so long, everyone just kind of knows to move to the back, even when I was a student.
