Language Help me troll my Turkish gf

I’m dating a Turkish girl (I’m Greek) and she trolls me by calling me stuff like «παιδάκι» (little child) because of a funny incident. I want to call her something similar to playfully troll her. Do you have anything similar in your language? That would be “irritate” her?

Language What doeas this saying mean?

Hi everybody! I just found this comment on IG about Turkish saying/word game "Are you one of those people we couldn't possibly make Czechoslovakian?" and nobody really explained in the comment section so I thought I'd ask here. 😅 I'm just curious what does it mean and what's the history of it? I like to learn about history of sayings in general, but since I'm from Slovakia, I'm really curious about this one. 🤭😊 Thanks in advance!

Language How well can Turkish people understand Uzbek?

I'm from Germany but I've recently spent one year in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. While there I learnt some Uzbek and now have a very shaky A1 level I'd say. Currently I'm in Istanbul for a 3 day stay and since I don't know any Turkish in particular I was wondering how well for example staff at a restaurant would understand me.

For example if I'd say "Bitta choy shakarsiz" or "Bugun Istanbulga keldim." Would people here understand that? Like simple phrases mostly. And also as a Turkish person would you prefer if I spoke to you in Uzbek or just English?

Language Turkish and Japanese language

I don't speak Turkish but I heard people speaking it since I have some Turkish friends, and today was the first time I watched Japanese anime and I immediately noticed the similarity in how Turkish and Japanese languages sound, am I wrong or is that a fact? If you ever heard Japanese before, would you say it sounds similar to Turkish? And if you don't think they're similar, whats the most similar sounding lanaguge in your opinion?

Language Why do Turkish people curse so much?

Turkish is my 3 language and I haven't been exposed to the language very much through out my life, but recently I started spending more time in Turkish subreddits and people curse very unnecessarily. Spending time reading such comments and posts has affected my thoughts and I started hearing curse words in my head when I'm thinking.

just wondering if this is a cultural thing.

Language Is "Attila" actually a boy's name that is used?

  1. Is Attila actually a name that is used? Haven't met anyone in Turkiye named Attila so wondering if its just misinformation from an English website.

  2. If it is used, does it connote to Attila the Hun or is he called something entirely different in Turkce? I'm guessing the Huns could be grouped as Turkic so asking (not sure)?

Language If I use "canim" to a man, will that automatically be understood as being flirty/romantic?

I searched the meaning and it just means 'dear'. Just like in thr english language 'dear' can be used to small children to colleagues or to other people.

However, when I used 'canim' to my language learning partner he was like 'wow' and then proceeded to show me his genitals. Lol.

And he said, "i thought you like me since you said 'çok yakısıklı'". But for me it is just a simple compliment for his yeşil/mavi gözle.

This is what happens when i am lost in translation. 😅

But please enlighten me, insanlar. Teşekkürler. İyi geceler.

Language Do people care if you pronounce it as 'Turkey' or 'Turkiye' when speaking English?

I'm an English teacher and have a lot of Turkish students.

I've noticed over the past couple of years that students will say "I'm from Turkiye" (pronounced like it is in Turkish) more than they used to. Due to the name changing officially I guess.

But I will reply with something like "Where in Turkey are you from?" It feels weird to me to pronounce one word in a different way. Might this offend people?

I always write Turkiye like this now but speaking it sounds strange to me.

More to Read, Reader at Work gibi birçok kitaba eriştim.

Selamlar herkese.

Language do uyghurs speak turkish?

i’m a turk from germany, and there’s an uyghur restaurant near my workplace that i visit quite often. i usually order my food online for pickup, and the app shows my name on the order. i’ve been to the restaurant many times, and there’s always a different employee there, but whenever they see my turkish name, they immediately ask me if i speak turkish.
one time, while i was waiting for my food, i also saw the owners’ two children come into the restaurant, and they were talking to each other in turkish. but they’re all uyghurs. google says that uyghurs don’t actually speak turkish, but uyghur, so i’m a little confused

Language Why is it "Türkiye" in English?

I don't get why it uses its endonym in English rather than the actual English name. Do most Turks agree with that naming?
