I got a speeding ticket, the cop lied.

• Upvotes

I just got pulled over near St Lazare on the 40. 1 was on cruise control at 120km/h following the speed of traffic, I saw a cop on the side of the road but didn't adjust my speed since everyone around me was doing the same. As soon as I pass him I see his break lights and he comes after me. He told me he caught me at 130, I told him it was impossible and that I was on cruise control but he didn't believe me. He gave me a ticket for going 129, it's 241$ and 2 points.

I know it's a small ticket, but out of principal I don't want to pay it and I want to contest it. I was no going 130, now I have no way to prove this besides my word, and they will side with the cop. But i'm just confused, could it have been a car behind me? No clue.

For context I drive a Subaru WRX and live in Montreal, Quebec.

Retaliation

I always see on here once people get their RTS from the eeoc that it's hard to find an attorney to take ther case without having to put up a big retainer amount. My question is if the eeoc finds reasonable cause dose it make it easier to attract attorney without having to put up a big retainer

Can't find legal advice, why?

I was prescribed something for health issues (an SNRI) that my provider should definitely have known would cause allergy/side-effects. Life threatening to me. I listed it on my records. I had horrible health issues and made the doctor completely take me off meds. I can barely function some days mentally and physically.

Easing back on to different meds, different doctors but I'm still sick as hell months later. I can't find anyone to help even with just getting advice or records. The one lawyer I felt completely hopeful about because I worked with him before. I asked for him for help with records and advice. He was rude as hell. I'm hoping that you can explain why I can't find anyone to talk to about any of it.

Why do civil plaintiffs have to plead enough facts to support a claim but when a prosecutor brings a criminal case, all they have to do is write down the charge and its elements?

I built an AI for client files that never leaves your Mac. Looking for 5 attorneys to break it.

I'm not a lawyer. I'm a designer in New Zealand, and I got uneasy watching professionals upload confidential files to cloud AI without a second thought.

So I built Privileged AI (www.privilegedai.app). It installs a local model (Llama 3.1 8B) inside Obsidian on your Mac. After setup it works offline. Your files stay on your disk, and no company sees them.

What it does well: summarising documents, drafting first-pass letters and memos, pulling key dates and obligations out of a contract. It ships with 10 legal prompt templates.

What it won't do: legal research, or match GPT-4 on hard reasoning. A smaller model runs locally, and that's the trade.

It needs a Mac with 8GB of RAM (16GB runs better). Setup takes under 10 minutes and you never touch a terminal.

I want 5 attorneys to use it for a week and tell me what's broken. Founding price is $84 with code "Founding25", one-time, 30-day refund. I'll also hop on a call and set it up with you.

Ask me anything in the comments. I'll answer every question.

How do I address a situation when my attorney isn't being honest?

Previous attorney sent a discovery and filed a compel discovery (20+ requests missing) but passed before it could be scheduled for hearing.

I told the new attorney about all the discovery issues and she agreed to do a compel. After hiring her she just gave me a b/s "it doesn't matter" to almost every question but two. I am asking her why it doesn't matter and she is ignoring me.

Unanswered discovery she claims "doesn't matter" include:
(1) Expenses and assets. Wife claims to spend $15k/month on living expenses but in reality it's like $200-$300, asked her for proof of the $15k/month expenses and she said "collecting these documents". Assets - moved $100K into a separate account before filing for divorce, I think she is trying to claim it to be premarital? (second part of that question asked to identify what is premarital, she hasn't answered the second part, so I don't know)
(2) Fault based claims. Wife sent 50 some random images/videos, hasn't identified what claim these support, who the people are, when it was taken, etc. Basically there is no way for me to build a defense, because who knows what I'm even looking at.

Obviously expenses/assets and fault claims matter in a divorce, but maybe there is a valid reason not to compel these questions? If there is, I need to hear it. But she isn't giving me an answer, and when I pressed her for an answer at our meeting she just threatened to quit multiple times "if you want, I can return your retainer".

Not asking for legal advice on the case itself, but how do I best address this? Should I just keep pressing her to explain why it wouldn't matter? (side note: counsel opposite hasn't even dismissed any questions as doesn't matter). If she doesn't explain, should I be suspicious?

Thinking of applying to law school. Advice?

Hi everyone! Before I start, I admire all of you. I know how difficult it is to become a lawyer.

I’m a 30 year old teacher currently (I hate it), I majored in English. I’d say I’m smart and well read. I took the LSAT diagnostic blind on lawhub and got a 152. I feel like if I study for six months I could get a good enough score to get into a law school.

My questions are:
1. Right now— I know this is subject to change— I’m interested in both immigration law and trust & estates law for personal reasons that I won’t bore you with. Are these specialties you’d tell a friend to go for or to stay away from?

  1. I am partially in it for the money. I make 55k as a teacher. I’m overworked and unsupported, I could deal with that for better pay. With that said, is the pay worth it?

  2. I have crippling anxiety that I’m medicated for. I’m not scared of the work, long hours, tests etc I am scared of the cold calls… how is that really?

Any advice appreciated.

Can someone be charged with felony murder if the statute of limitations has run out on the underlying felony?

This from a fictional case in a popular TV show. Many years after a what would have been a minor burglary, except that someone died, someone confesses to the burglary.

All evidence points to the death being truly accidental. The deceased was startled and had a deadly fall. They were startled by the burglar, and would not have fallen and died were there no burglary.

Since the statute of limitations has long run out on the burglary, what charges would be brought against the person who confesses?

Paralegal or Masters?

Hello everyone! I am active duty right now and considering getting out to pursue a law degree. I finish my bachelor’s degree in December and still have some active duty time left to use Tuition Assistance. I was considering MBA or paralegal to get some exposure. It seems like a no brainer for a masters over an associates but the introduction to legal concepts and practices (like preparing cases, legal writing, etc) could be valuable.

For context my dream is attending UVA (bias because I’m from VA), doing a federal clerkship, practicing (not sure what category of law yet) for a bit and eventually running my own firm. Ambitious, I know, but those are my long term goals that this next step would be leading to.

Any helpful advice is appreciated and welcomed!

TIA!

Liability as a freelancing developer

Let’s say I was hired to build a certain software for a client (free/paid) and it gets hacked which caused personal information stored in a db. Can I be sued or would it be the client? How to protect yourself from a legal standpoint? Assume software engineer had done everything they could to make sure data is secure.

What do I do?

So I am a recovering addict and I had an attorney who was helping me get custody back of my children. Whenever I was six months sober I begged him to put visitation petition in because I knew if too much time went by she would be able to file for adoption, then he waited too long so she was able to file for adoption. I went to court with two years of clean hair follicles, and the judge still did not rule in my favor, even though I had a home and I had never been proven unfit then my attorney told me that he was going to appeal the adoption and told me for an entire year that everything was fine only for me to find out later that the Appeal had been dismissed a year prior so now I don’t know what to do. I can’t afford another attorney. I want to turn him into the ethics board, but I just don’t know if that will prove or do anything so I’m really needing some help and guidance and if there’s any way to fight for my kids to be a part of their life, I was done very wrong by the system and so if anybody knows any recourse, please let me know

Selling Custom Made Bicycles

As a hobby I have built a few bicycles from scratch. Completely welded up the frame from raw tubing etc. I am not using many of them and would like to sell them but afraid if someone gets hurt on my custom design for whatever reason ( may not even be a failure of my design), they could take legal action against me. Is this a real concern? Anyway to protect myself at the time of sale? With some document that I have the buyer sign or something? Thanks

Worthless Management

Location: RALEIGH, DURHAM NC

I abruptly left my previous apartment for medical safety reasons due to issues with two adjacent tenants. Initially, when I moved in, there was an agreement between management, my case manager, and myself for a medical move approval. However, over time, the property management did not honor the contract, almost from the start. There were four meetings to address serious issues and health concerns that developed, along with 72 emails of complaints filled with pictures and police reports. It became evident that they were not going to honor their agreement, and I was forced out by constructive eviction and discriminatory practices. I filed a Fair Housing Act (FHA) complaint, which was approved, and now the other party has agreed to participate. I was asked what it would take to make me feel whole, but that is a difficult question when I have paid for an apartment that I did not sleep in because it was uninhabitable. Now that I am faced with this question, I am unsure of what the point is and where I should start thinking in this situation. I have read a lot about these situations with conciliation meetings and I am nervous about what to expect. What should my expectations be?

How do California insurance bad faith attorneys evaluate cases involving contradictory coverage decisions?

I'm curious about how California attorneys generally evaluate the viability and economic attractiveness of first-party insurance bad faith litigation, particularly when the underlying breach-of-contract claim appears well supported.

For example, consider a hypothetical situation where an auto insurer denies two substantial collision claims based on alleged nonpayment, yet subsequently accepts liability and pays another claim arising under the same policy, despite no intervening premium payments. Assume there are also renewal and billing records that potentially contradict the insurer's asserted lapse.

A few aspects of this area of practice interest me:

  • How much weight do bad faith attorneys generally place on apparently inconsistent coverage decisions when evaluating cases?
  • How does the potential recovery of Brandt fees affect whether a case is economically attractive to a plaintiff's attorney?
  • Is limited-scope representation common in California insurance litigation, where an attorney handles the bad faith claims while the insured independently pursues breach of contract?
  • When the underlying vehicle losses and potential consequential damages are substantial, what typically makes these cases economically worthwhile for a firm?

I'm interested in the broader litigation economics and how attorneys approach these cases as a matter of professional practice, rather than advice about any particular dispute.

What would happen if Trump made being short illegal ?

Let's say he passes a law saying that being under 170cm (5'7) as a man is illegal and if a police officer sees a short man anywhere he will obligated to arrest him and also being short as a man will now be punished by 7 years in jail

Defense attorneys, how do you do it everyday?

I'm a prosecutor, but I'd like to get on the money train. I am considering going over to the dark side, but I have so many years of experience dealing with truly awful people; I think I would find it hard to deal with them as clients.

I know that a lot of other prosecutors have gone to the defense side. I just want to know how you manage the disgust that one naturally feels toward people guilty of the types of crimes that I am currently convicting them of.

This is a serious question.

McDonald’s Monopoly “Prize” requires payment information, is this legal?

So I won 2 free months of peacock premium from the McDonald’s monopoly game this year, but in order for me to redeem it I have to input my payment details and it says in the fine print I WILL be charged if I don’t cancel the membership in time. Seems like a pretty shitty prize imo, but also, is this even legal since it was a sweepstakes prize?

I emailed Peacock to try and get around giving them my payment info and it was a no go, they are firm that I need to provide it in order to redeem this prize.

Oklahoma — Tulsa Municipal Court Citation Lists No Insurance and No Seat Belt Despite Both Being Incorrect

I received a citation in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for aggravated speeding. The citation alleges I was traveling 89 mph in a 55 mph zone, measured by radar. It also records “no” for insurance coverage and seat belt use, but both entries are incorrect.

When the officer requested proof of insurance, I handed him a copy of my insurance information. I was also wearing my seat belt at the time of the stop.

This is my first traffic citation. My court date is October 22, 2026, in Tulsa Municipal Court.

I’m trying to understand the legal significance of these discrepancies under Oklahoma law.

  1. Does an officer recording incorrect information about insurance coverage and seat belt use have any legal significance when the citation also alleges aggravated speeding?

  2. If I can document that I had valid insurance at the time of the stop, how is that discrepancy typically handled in court?

  3. Can the incorrect entries affect the prosecution of the speeding charge, or are these matters generally treated separately?

  4. What Oklahoma statutes or court rules govern the correction or challenge of factual errors on a municipal traffic citation?

I understand that the alleged speeding is a separate issue, and I’m specifically interested in the legal effect of the inaccurate entries on the citation.

Thank you for any clarification regarding Oklahoma law.

Is there such thing as an un-arguable case?

One of my current new hobbies is watching appellate hearings for shady cops & other officials who lose their QI and then appeal it. I really like how the judges typically argue the opposite stance of whoever is presenting at the time & kind of force them to really have their stuff together.

Yesterday, I watched one where something happened that I've never seen before. The lawyer for the officer was doing his argument & one of the Judges was getting mad and asking him if he was actually trying to argue that & then basically told him he was wrong & misrepresting the case he was citing. The lawyer also kept breaking the rules because I guess there's something where you have to agree to the injured party's facts or something, like if they say something happened you can't include an argument against it in your argument. Something like that

Anyways, they ended up awarding the person the officer harmed attorneys fees for making a frivolous appeal & it got me thinking if there are ever cases where there just is not an argument that a lawyer could make.

Like maybe if what a person did was so egregious and they were caught on a super clear video or some other extremely strong evidence. Or like in one appeal case, one of the lawyers tried to argue there was no existing law saying an officer couldn't do a thing & the Judge was like "did it ever occur to you that that's the case because no reasonable person would ever consider doing such a thing?"

Recently gone solo?

I’m conducting research for an upcoming book and would like to interview you on these three questions:

  1. Have you recently left a large firm to become a solo practitioner or start a small boutique firm?
  2. How does your currently reality compares to what you expected before leaving?
  3. What is your view on technology and how important this was in your transition?

While sitting in the area of North State Street in Columbia Street I observed a blue Jeep bearing the plates 353ewc that I could not observe the whole license plate being illuminated I observed the vehicle southbound and stopped just north of the Marathon gas station and I observe two individuals get out of the back seat of the Jeep the Jeep then pulled into the Marathon gas station where it began to get fuel while sitting there at the observed the vehicle in the on position and while looking through binoculars I could not see the plate being properly illuminated on the vehicle the vehicle left the gas station and turned North and began driving Northbound on State Street where I got directly behind a vehicle and could not see the license plate in properly illuminated I activated my overhead emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop in the area of State Road 5 and 350 south.

Is being blown off by a law office par for the course?

location: Arizona
date: Oct 14
subject: Please close personal representative of the estate of <passed mom>
conversation:
me:
Hello representatives of <neglectful> Law,

On August 3rd I requested to close the personal representative of the estate of <passed mom> and sent along with that request all the banking documents.

I also left phone messages for <lady rep> twice, with your AI assistant.  So, I'm asking again.  I will send the documents again, in a separate email, just in case it got blocked before.

So, please just get this finished.

reply <lady rep>, not actual lawyer:
Hi <me> – We apologize for the delay in our responding to you. We have been buried in court imposed/hard deadlines.

<actual lawyer> and I are reviewing everything you have provided us recently, and cross-checking against the remaining tasks to tie-up the administration of this probate.  Please allow us until next week to get you over an email with any questions we have and or request for any additional information.

 Thank you.

Question for you, the reader: Is this typical? (Mind you, when I first paid this firm and completed the 'welcome packet', I didn't hear anything back from them for over two months. that reason was that the lawyer had gotten hip replacement surgery when I signed up.)

Also, if they don't come back to me in a week, can I just file the closing papers myself (have the kit already) or is the court going to want to see me because I'm jumping out of jurisdiction (so to speak).

Thank you for your time.
