Mod Post r/Audio Posting and some other information - V2.0

Hello r/audio community.

Here is a refresher on a previous mod post.

  • r/audio has some measures in place to minimize the amount of spam that gets through to be posted.
    • Minimum account age of 3 days.
    • Minimum combined karma of 5 karma.
    • All non-text posts (link posts) need to be manually approved.
    • Titles of 2 or less words will not be approved.
  • Posts that do not meet the above criteria get put into modqueue, where we manually approve the posts through the day. Some of us also get an alert for each new post. This also means that we see 95% of the posts.

That said, I see a ton of posts lately that are similar to "How do I connect x to x" or just a picture of the back of a speaker with no more details. Rule #2 is Details matter. Which brings me to my next point.

How to get help on your post.

  1. Find and read the product manual before posting.
    1. When someone posts a question about specific hardware (usually after I have to ask for the make/model; see rule #2) the first thing I do is find the manual, and it usually answers their question.
  2. Post Formatting Matters
    1. I've been seeing a lot of "wall of text" type posts. Please add line breaks and paragraph breaks in your post. It makes it much easier to read and much more likely someone will help you.
  3. Contrary to a popular saying, "A picture DOES NOT say a thousand words"
    1. Please refrain from posing images with zero context and a title such as "Why doesn't this work" without telling us a lot more information.
    2. This is like going to a car help sub, posting a picture of what's under the hood of a car and asking "Why won't this work", with no details as to the Make/Model of car, issue you're actually having, and what troubleshooting you've tried.
  4. You will most likely get the assistance you're searching for if you follow Rule 1,2,3,4,5, but really, the more details in your post, the higher the chance you will get assistance will be. Rule #1 - Details matter. This has become so much an issue, we've had u/automod post a reminder on each new post about the need for details.
  5. A lot of people fall into the trap of the XY problem. https://xyproblem.info

All of the other rules are just as important. Such as Trying to Google something first. I understand that it may be difficult to find something if you aren't quite sure what you're looking for. But if I can copy your post title directly into google and find the answer on the first page, it means you could have as well.

I'm not saying these things to single anyone out, or throw shade at any one post. I'm simply trying to help those who need help. I've worked in technical support for a long time now, and people are more willing to help you if you help them back. If someone asks a series of clarifying questions in reply to a post, make sure to answer all questions to the best of your ability. Nothing is worse than trying to help someone and they make it seem like you're inconveniencing them by not solving a vague question right away.

We are here to help. Help us help you!

Beachtek on Zoom recorder

Hallo

I bought a second hand Beachtek dxa-2t passive xlr-mic adapter and want to use it on my Zoom H1n. But - even with all setting on max - this external input on my Zoom H1n is very low (-30db). On my Nikon D7100 the Beachtek works fine.
What could be the cause of this problem and can it be solved?

Regards Peter

Audio software to prevent loud noises

I myself am diagnosed with autism and adhd. I have an issue with some games, specifically horror games, which can cause me stress and anxiety when I get a jump scare, making it hard to enjoy the game at all, so for the first time I coded my own computer program I called Spikeguard. It actively listens to all audio and dampens it so that there isn't abrupt loud noise and instead gradually becomes loud over time, allowing music to keep playing

And I made it free and open source for everyone like me who has a hard time with loud noise like me!

Here is the GitHub repository:

How strong and secure are the DJI Mic Mini 2's magnetic clips compared with the Hollyland Lark M2's especially when vlogging while walking or swinging camera shoulder straps occasionally?

LSorry but I couldn't get a definitive answer to my inquiry above even when I A.I. searched for it so I'm relying on this community to provide first hand experience on the matter

I have a DJI Mic Mini 2 coming in and also bought a Hollyland Lark M2 (with a returning window until today). While both has its advantages in sound quality at default settings (according to my ears) with the Lark M2 being more bright and crisp and the DJI Mic Mini 2 having more clarity with its emphhasis on lower frequencies, I'M ANXIOUS ABOUT LOSING ITS MICS MAGNETICALLY ATTACHED ON THEIR PROVIDED MAGNETIC CLIPS WHENEVER I'M VLOGGING WHILE WALKING OR SWINGING MY CAMERA SHOULDER STRAPS which may hit the mic detaching it from their magnetic clips.

Can anyone provide your experiences on the matter to help me decide which one to keep? Thank you.

Best device for Converting Cassettes tapes to Digital?

I've got a ton of cassette tapes that I'd like to convert to digital. I have been using a tascam CC-222 to convert them to CD and then ripping the CDs to MP3 and then editing with audacity.... but the tascam died awhile ago and now I'm thinking there is probably a better way to do it. Though the tascam did have good audio and while most of the CDs (but not all) are talks or presentations I do care about the audio. Suggestions please!

Products available to support multiple outputs.

I have a focusrite 2i2, mainly used for my microphone and headphones with my pc. I want to also connect my speakers to the output, but don't want to use a passive splitter because of the volume loss. What are my options? I would like to be able to have both outputs active at the same time, then just turn off the speakers when I don't want/need them.

IEM channel keep swapping.

Hey, I have a pair of IEMs I've been using for a whole but the problem is that the channels keep swapping all the time. My left channel becomes the right one and vice versa.

I have changed the buds from one side to another multiple times but it keeps on happening and its super annoying. I don't know if this could be an windows issue.

Anyone knows what could this be or how to fix it?

Epiano on discord

Hey,

I always wanted to play some piano with my friends on discord (ps5), but I'm too inexperienced to do it right.

My setup:

Yamaha stage piano cp 300 (midi and aux possible)

Sadly no audio interface, which would it made way easier if I'm not mistaken.

I was wondering if I could somehow connect the piano to my phone (samsung) or Ipad and then join the discord and hear the audio of the piano.

Every help is appreciated 😊

Denon AVR-S940H Receiver Right Channel Issue - Troubleshooting Help Requested

Hey all, I recently bought a used Denon AVR-S940H from a friend, who assured me it was working great when he sold it to me. It worked well for me for a few days, until yesterday I began having issues with the front right channel speaker sounding fuzzy and low-volume. I reset the receiver to factory settings and restarted it, and it did not fix the issue. I then swapped out the speakers to ensure It wasn't a speaker issue, and that did nothing. I also tried updating the stereo receiver software via wifi, which completed successfully, and did nothing. Finally, I swapped out speaker cables, and double checked the wire terminals, and that also did not rectify the situation. It has gotten worse, and I can now barely hear anything audible from the right speaker.

I am using the receiver as a standalone stereo receiver to power two Klipsch Heresy II speakers in a r/L stereo configuration. It is not connected to a TV, surrounds, or subwoofer.

Before I go back to him and ask him to help me, or take back the receiver, I wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else I should try. Thanks in advance for your help!

Also, this is a cross-post from r/hometheater

Looking for a Krisp.ai/CrystalSound alternative for Windows 11 (AMD GPU)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a software for Windows 11 that can isolate my voice from my girlfriend's voice when we're sitting close to each other (about 2 meters apart).

I'm currently testing the free trial of Krisp.ai, and it's phenomenal! Even if my girlfriend is shouting while I'm speaking quietly, it consistently picks up only my voice. Unfortunately, the subscription is too expensive for me: €16/month, or €8/month with an annual subscription.

I'm therefore looking for a free or reasonably priced alternative to Krisp.ai and CrystalSound, which, from what I understand, offers a similar AI-powered voice isolation feature.

Unfortunately, I have an AMD GPU, so I can't use NVIDIA's excellent built-in noise removal software.

To be clear, I'm not looking for a simple noise gate or standard noise suppression. I need an AI-powered solution that can recognize and isolate my specific voice, filtering out my girlfriend's voice even when she's speaking loudly nearby.

Does anyone know of any software that can achieve this on Windows 11 with an AMD GPU, ideally for free or at a much lower price than Krisp?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

I switched PC's, now my mic sounds very bad.

I had a laptop, now I bought a PC. I don't know why, even after tweaking settings, both Windows and OBS, and putting filters, voice isn't half as clear as it was on the laptop. All the settings I checked were the same in the laptop, what's going on.

My mic is razer kraken headphones, IK it's very bad, but it was a lot cleaner in the laptop.

Anyone has any idea why?

Best budget mic recommendations?

Rn I currently have the razer siren v3 mini but lately I've been thinking about upgrading. I want a pretty mic that I can use for whatever the hell I want. Such as gaming, streaming, podcasting, singing, voice acting, etc. I just need the BEST one. With that said, I'm gonna lay out 2 rules. 1: it HAS to be under 100 dollars. I'll accept recommendations like the hyper X quad cast 2 but PLEASE don't recommend me brands like shure, rode, etc. While I'm sure those sound and look nice, I do not have that kind of money for expensive brands like those (unless they have good looking mics under 100$). Rule 2: no handheld mic designs like the shure sm58 LC cardioid. Those look ugly and is just not the design I'm going for my future setup. With that out of the way, what are your recommendations?

Tips on Macbook Pro M2 to surround sound system Logitech Z-5500

Hi, i recently got my hands on a Logitech Z-5500 surround system for free!
However i'm struggling to figure out how to connect them to my Macbook Pro M2 with true surround sound signal.

The speakers offers digital coxial cable, optic cable or 3 stereo 3.5 cable inputs. Is there anyway to convert usb-c or HDMI to coaxial or optic or any way of making 3 stereo outputs from my Macbook Pro M2 without buying a DAC or other expensive hardware? (I'm very low budget)

If there is no way of doing it real cheap, what is the easiest solution? I also have an old pc laptop with linux installed, working as a server, in my place, but i don't think it has coaxial or optic cable outputs either, but maybe there's an easier fix there?

Any help and knowledge is appreciated!

Begginer audio system for TV CD's and PC

Hi guys, I thought that I didn't need help, but I was wrong. There is too much stuff that goes into a good audio setup. A couple of years ago, I started building my audio setup for my PC. I used IEMs before and wanted good speakers and a mic, so I bought a Behringer XM8500 because I heard it's good and cheap. Then, I needed a way to get audio from my mic to my PC, and from my PC to my IEMs (and speakers in the future). I landed on an audio interface specifically the M-AUDIO M-TRACK 2×2—because it had places to connect my mic, my IEMs, and future speakers. It also had separate knobs for the speakers and IEMs, so I could choose what I wanted to listen to.

BUT it didn't work as planned. The mic was so quiet that no one could hear me, so I returned it, and that was the end of my journey. Now I have a mic that I can't connect to my PC, and IEMs that I connect to my monitor which have constant static noise.

Recently, my mission to find a good setup reappeared because my girlfriend and I want to start collecting CDs and ditch Spotify. I also want my mic back. I started looking for something for my TV and CDs (some good speakers and a way to connect it all), and finally, something for my PC setup to be able to connect my mic, good speakers, and IEMs at the same time, and control it all physically, not digitally.

BUT THERE IS TOO MUCH STUFF. I landed on Hi-Fi gear, but it's too much for me right now. I just want a working audio setup that won't cost me all my money, because my girlfriend is moving in with me and I've recently started a business, so money is tight. I can't spend $2000 on speakers and something to connect them (I'm from Poland, by the way, so it's even more expensive for me) And i don't what is the lowes number i can say form my budget for all of this to work out but 500$ for this is a lot for me.

So, I need help from you guys on what to do and what to buy. I will probably buy all the stuff I need over time so it won't hurt my wallet as much. To repeat what I want: something for my PC to connect a mic, good speakers, and IEMs so that I can choose between the sound coming from the IEMs or speakers. I also need a setup for my TV so that when I watch movies, I have good sound quality and can listen to music from CDs from a distance of around 2 meters.

Thanks in advance

Best setup for flexibility

Hi, I am looking to buy a setup that is good for both studio podcasting and location recording.

The ideal setup would be 2 decent podcasting mics, 4tx to 1rx lav mic kit, and a 24bit/32bit multi track recorder.

Trying to keep it under $1000 (might be dreaming)

For recorders I've been looking at the Zoom podtrak p4next or the zoom H6 essential.

For lav mics I'm looking at the comica vimo q kit or the saramonic blink 500 prox b8 kit.

And looking for options for 2 decent podcasting mics.

Just a little nervous as this will be the first lot of equipment I've bought for myself and don't want to waste money.

Any advice would be appreciated! 🙏🏻

M-Track Duo HD headphone output extremely quiet

Hi, I recently bought an M-Audio M-Track Duo HD, and the headphone output is extremely quiet even with the PHONES knob turned all the way up.

I'm using a HyperX Cloud II with a 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm adapter. The same headphones work perfectly and get very loud when plugged directly into my Mac's 3.5 mm headphone jack.

I've tried switching between Direct Mono, Direct Stereo, and USB monitoring, but the volume remains very low.

Has anyone experienced this? Could my unit be faulty, or is this normal for the M-Track Duo HD?

offline-first stage planning & autopatch tool

Like many of you, I got completely tired of receiving blurry photos of handwritten stage plots, deciphering missing info on gig day, and manually doing cable/stand math in my head before load-in.

I’m a live sound guy and frontend dev, so I decided to automate the routine and built Patchr:

  • Visual Stage Plot: Quick drag-and-drop placement of inputs/outputs on stage.
  • Autopatch & Autolist: Generates clean input/output lists and automatically estimates required cables, mic stands, DI boxes.
  • Signal Flow Routing: For deeper desk prep, you can visually route sub-snakes/stageboxes, groups, and FX busses.
  • Offline-first & zero signup: Runs completely client-side in the browser. The whole project state is stored right in the URL/local storage, so bands can just send you a link and you open it instantly.

Live Demo: https://patchr.kochy.art/

A quick heads-up on the current state:

This is a raw MVP. The built-in mic/gear database is currently minimal (just a few staples like SM57/58, sE V7, basic wedges, etc.), but the input field is an open text field with autocomplete - so you can type in any custom mic or box and it saves it into your project.

I’d love to get your honest feedback:

What staple mics, DIs, or gear do you need in the autocomplete suggestions first?

Does the routing and patch workflow fit how you actually prep your gigs?

Thanks for taking a look and hope it saves someone a headache during prep!

Looking for >=4 in 1 out mixer.

Im looking for a mixer with 4 inputs or more that has independent volume control and 1 output with a "master" volume control. With 3.5mm connectors or something that can be adapter-ed to it.

I have no trouble finding "cheap" Amazon alternatives but i am unsure of the quality, and problems with audio quality, hissing or the like.

Im located in Northern Europe so products that ship to here would be preferable.

Would appreciate any recommendations! :)

My creative pebble pro speakers just kicked it, what are some replacement ideas that might last longer?

For context I recently built my fist PC and these speakers have been great up until they stopped playing sound just today after maybe 5 months of use. They are still recognized my by computer but don't play sound. Same thing on my laptop. So I'm now in the market for new pc speakers. They do need to be usb-c or usb-a connection to my computer but that's all I'm picky about.

Outdoor speaker wire and long runs

Hi All. I am adding 5 speakers and subwoofer to our yard space. I have a low voltage conduit (currently empty) from my house to the shed this distance is about 80 feet. From the shed to the closet speaker is about 30 feet, and the speaker furtherest from the shed is about 120 feet.

I plan to use a sonos amp with 4 B&W AM-1, and a OSD SMP200 with OSD Forza 10" subwoofer.

I already have a server rack in my basement with my existing sonos amp and other audio/networking equipment. My plan was to store new new sonos amp and SMP200 there as well and terminate the speaker wire here. That would mean the shortest run would be 110 feet and the longest would be 200 feet (give or take 10 feet). The sub would probably be on the longest run.

If i terminate the speaker wire at the shed then the short run would be 30 feet and the longest 120 feet. It would also mean storing the amps in the shed (which isn't the end of the world but ideal since it is not conditioned space)

Is ~200 feet at the extreme end of a speaker wire run and would it be better to just terminate the speaker wire at the shed (which would put the longest at 120 feet)?
