Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Show and Tell I made Audiophile.fm, a free way to listen to lossless internet radio

Hey everyone, I’m Bojan, the person behind Audiophile.fm.

I started this project in 2024 because I wanted an easier way to find and listen to lossless radio stations. It brings together handpicked stations streaming in FLAC, from CD-quality to Hi-Res options across jazz, classical, rock, electronic, and more.

It’s free, no annoying ads and there’s no account to create, and you can listen directly through the website or Android and iOS apps.

The apps are available here:

Consider that apps were just recently released, so many features are still in development like Chromecast, AirPlay, EQ... and other integrations and features.

It’s been a lot of work getting here and I’d love to hear how it fits into your listening setup and receive any feedback and suggestions.

Thanks.

Purchasing USA Worth it for the cabinets?

I have the same set of RS5 towers that the lower 1/3 of the cabinets are busted open due to flooding - the water stopped below the drivers. Would it be worth it to buy these and swap the drivers from the set I have? Seller is asking $25 for the set.

Purchasing USA Question about highs

Straight to the point, I like really loud, crisp clean highs when listening to music. I have polk audio components in my car and the highs are outstanding. I was looking around for some home speakers with nice loud highs and everything I saw said Klipsch highs were too much for some people, which I thought would be perfect for me. I got a set of rp-500m ii to just kind of try them out and while the speakers sound great the highs are just not as amazing as I was hoping. The mids sound spectacular but I need more highs. So my question is, what is a set of tower speakers that have really good overall sound but have exceptional highs that I can match with these? I'm on a bit of a budget so nothing crazy, around $500, used, older models are fine.

Thanks in advance

Show and Tell New Big John Machine (and new Cuck Chair)

Post image

Today I did a full Tour de Suisse with the sole purpose of getting my first "more serious" hifi setup. My car now smells like old carpet and someone else's divorce, and I've never been happier.

The haul:

NAD 302 – 20€. Bought from a woman clearing out her ex-husband's stuff. She didn't care what it was or what it was worth. She just wanted it out of her house. I didn't negotiate. You don't haggle with someone who's that close to the finish line. Somewhere out there a man is about to discover his amp is gone, and I'm sorry, but it's mine now.

Bose 6.2 – 90€. Dad wanted to throw them in the trash. His kid listed them behind his back. I gave him 100€ and told him to keep the change. That's two families I've personally interfered with today, and it's not even dinner.

Eames Lounge Chair Replica – 200€. The crown jewel. And honestly? This thing is really good. Soft leather, perfect recline, zero creaks. It sits in the right corner next to the system, at the perfect angle to lean back and quietly watch the NAD do its thing. Not the sweet spot, but the chair knows what it's for.

Total: 310€, 80€ for gas, roughly 600km of driving, a sandwich and 2 red bulls, and 0 regrets.

Will report back. Right now I have to listen to the live version of Hotel California from Hell Freezes Over for the first time, like every other person who has ever bought an amplifier.

Review/Discussion Infinity Kappa 6.1 restoration

Post image
4 Upvotes

Bought a pair of Kappa 6.1 speakers for a good deal and looking to restore to proper function. They are in great shape and work. However, the poly dome on the mid drivers needs replaced which I have already sourced. The really issue I’m having is someone has replaced the 8” bass drivers with cheaper heavy duty “goldwood sound inc GW-8PC/8” I want to replace them with Dayton Audio RS225P-4A 8" Reference Paper Woofer 4 Ohm. I want to make sure someone hasn’t redone the stock cross over. Is there way to be sure of it ? I’m new to all this and want to make sure it’s correct. The speakers they have in it currently are 8 Ohm when the stock woofers are supposed to be 4 Ohm like what I’d like to replace it with. I have photos however the post only allows me to post one. Please help lol.

Purchasing USA Paradigm Premier 700f - Floor Model

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hey guys, I found a deal for a pair of Paradigm Premier 700f floor models for $600 total for both.

I’m going to demo them later, but does this sound like a good price? I currently have a 3.1 system with a paradigm center channel and Atom SEs for an HT system.

I think these would replace the Atoms for my 3.1 HT and then the Atoms would get moved to surround duty, or they might be for a stereo set up for a dedicated music room.

Does anyone have experience with this speaker set?

Review/Discussion Looking for budget sub recommendations

I'm looking to add a subwoofer to my current 3.0 setup and looking for suggestions.

So far:

Polk RT800i tower speakers

Polk XT30 center channel

fairly large and open basement. About 11 ft away from TV.

I primarily watch movies and want to add more low end impact. I’m not looking for ridiculously loud or boomy but just a noticeable improvement in depth as the towers can only do so much like the beach landing in Saving Private Ryan.

What I've seen in my range.

Klipsch R-100SW

Polk HTS 10

Dayton CS 1000

I want to keep it under $350. Ideally under $300.

Show and Tell Picked up an Onkyo DX-C110 for 14 bucks

Post image

Recently I’ve been making changes to my audio setup to accommodate physical media. I found this at a local thrift store for pretty cheap, originally intended to use it as a placeholder piece but I’m starting to think I should just keep it as my main CD player. I don’t want to go get a more expensive unit just to find out it doesn’t make much of a difference, or worse still that I don’t like it as much as the Onkyo.
The sound quality absolutely blows me away, very vibrant and bright, kinda gives music a particular flavor I’ve been looking for.
I’ve been looking into the AccuPulse D/A converter, but I can’t find a whole lot of info. If anyone could tell me more I’d be eternally grateful
Good value or should I upgrade at some point?

Show and Tell 30-year drummer, first real stereo setup

Post image
11 Upvotes

I've been playing drums for 30 years, but somehow I'd never put together a proper stereo setup. That changed over the last few weeks, and I've had way more fun with it than I expected.

The gear

- Raspberry Pi running Volumio + the FusionDSP plugin (CamillaDSP under the hood)

- FiiO K11 R2R DAC

- Cayin A-50T MkII tube amp → Cambridge SoundWorks Ensemble IV satellites (pulled out of storage after years of sitting unused)

- QSC RMX 850 → two Diamond Audio Mac Daddy 10" subs in boxes I built

- Alpine 3673 active crossover on the sub side, 100 Hz FMOD high-pass filters in front of the Cayin

Building the subs

This was the best part. Each box is about 50 liters with a passive radiator on the back (CSS APR10), aiming for a tuning in the mid-20s Hz. Dual voice coil drivers wired in series. My first fire-up had zero bass because I'd botched the sub wiring. Once that was sorted out... wow. Deep and warm in a way I didn't expect from a pair of 10s.

DSP made the biggest difference

I measured everything with REW and a UMIK-1 from the bed (with my kids invading the room mid-sweep more than once).

- My bedroom has a monster room mode around 38 Hz. Cutting it about 12 dB turned boom into deep, tight bass. In-room, the subs now play flat down to about 25 Hz.

- Flipping the sub phase on the Alpine filled in a hole around the crossover.

- The biggest surprise: I listen from one side of the bed, so I entered the speaker distances in FusionDSP to delay the closer speaker. It's less than a millisecond, and it snapped the whole soundstage to center.

Things I learned

- As a drummer, missing cymbals were my first complaint. Turning up the tube amp relative to the sub amp brought most of them back. The subs were burying them.

- The room sets the limits. There's a doorway on one side and a dresser on the other, so the speakers are only 5–6 feet apart. Covering the dresser mirror with a blanket helped.

- FusionDSP's crosstalk cancellation sounded horrible in my room. Off it went.

- Roger Waters' Amused to Death is a great test album. A voice on the title track came from way outside the left speaker.

- REW and Claude (for turning the measurements into EQ filters) were legit amazing.

What would you try next?

Purchasing USA Ready to move up to better bookshelf speakers

Hello All,

Following the guidance of this sub, I got my first system going for a rather low amount of money. I learned what I liked and what I would like to improve. I've used it for a year and now I'm looking to upgrade my speakers. These will be wired speakers and I must stay with the bookshelf size. I use Tidal app with my Douk amp and RSI 10" bass. My 5" speakers I have now are nice with good sound. But, I would like to have more definition and soundstage (if possible). My pricing would be $600 to $700. I have enough amp for my environment, so I think just an upgrade of the speakers is warranted.

With this amp I see the following recommendations:

1.) KEF Q150 or KEF LS50

2.) Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-600M II

3.) MartinLogan Motion® XT B100

Please feel free to suggest other or pick one of the above choices.

Thank you,

Review/Discussion Solidsteel S2 rack

Post image
• Upvotes

I'm looking at getting a hifi rack and I was wondering if anybody has any solidsteel products and the quality of them, as the reviews for their lower budget racks are kinda mixed. I'm just wondering if anyone has this or a similar one and their thoughts on the quality of it.

Its annoying because there aren't really many other hifi component racks for sale in the sub 1000 dollar range in Aus...

Tech Support Marshall Kilburn 3 bass and treble knobs go back to default after power reset.

• Upvotes

I have a Marshall Kilburn 3 and I have the bass and treble knobs turned up all the way to 10. But every time I turn the speaker off and unplug from the charger and then plug it back in and turn it on, the bass and treble settings go back to default (middle) and I have to turn them back up from the knobs. This only happens if I unplug the charger after turning it off and then reconnect it and turn it back on. If I just turn it off and turn it back on while on battery, this doesn’t happen and the bass and treble levels stay where I set them.

I’m using the Marshall app and have updated the firmware to 1.3.2 as well. I have tried resetting the device and reconnecting but the issue is still there.

I’m wondering if this is the nature of the device or a bug or a fault with my device, or if this is something that can be patched with a software update as I would prefer to keep my bass and treble levels set at the same level at all times without them ever changing after restarts.

Is this normal behaviour? Anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Picked up some L96’s for a great deal from an old dude who was getting ready to move a month or two ago. He told me to reach out again in October to see what was left and he would give me a good deal.

Here’s the deal:
Near mint L86’s
Used once 4312A (only one)
Denon DP-37F turntable

For a lil over $1000. Granted that’s a lot of money for me and this was pushing my budget (especially after the l96 purchase a few months ago) but I don’t see myself buying speakers ever again… ideally lol

… unless I can find another single 4312A…

Tech Support Using Wiim's room correction function, I managed to get this frequency response out of my KEF Q Concerto Metas. Looks reasonably good, but should I adjust the EQ manually further or just leave it be?

This is measured from my couch. If I get closer to the speakers, the measurement goes a bit out of whack.

Purchasing Asia Upgrading from kanto tuk, looking at wharfdale linton, studio monitors, what should I be looking at around $1000?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have a pair of kanto tuks that broke, and kanto's singapore distributor has been rather unpleasant and unprofessional, and telling me that they refuse to repair the tuk and my only option besides just dumping it in the bin is swap to the tuk2 for around a thousand US when converted.

I've been reasonably happy with the tuks but I'm rather weary of buying another one after the customer experience I've had, so I ended up looking for used speakers, and I'm slightly overwhelmed by all the options.

Am quite unfamiliar with audiophile stuff, far as I understand unpowered speakers Is the way to go, and something to drive it.

I've only ever had powered speakers, besides the tuks it was b&o 8000s and besides that just slightly fancier Bluetooth stuff. I saw a pair of wharfdale lindons's, and in a strange way I really like the design despite it completely clashing with my general preference of modern monochrome design.

Plus I've read it has a very smooth not harsh sound which was my only problem with the tuk at times.

I'm looking for something with a more relaxed/smooth/gentle/Dreamy? Sound profile that you can listen to for a really long time and it's still pleasant.

Unfortunately it's a bit too expensive though I am still really interested in it, but by the time I add the Amp it's probably closer to 2000

I thought I'd ask here, I'm open to whatever speakers/Amp that might be good, I'm thinking used, but hopefully something that isn't too cable spaghetti?

just connecting my mac so I don't think I'll need too fancy of an Amp.

For context I'll be using it at a desk, which I realises is "wrong" but I'll probably be rolling my chair back quite a bit when actually listening.

Apologies if I'm missing important details, I tried to include what I thought would be useful, please let me know if I missed anything. :)

Review/Discussion My Setup - Any Recommendations?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey guys!

I’ve been following this sub for a while and figured it was finally time to share my setup and get some feedback!

I’m in my mid-20s and have always loved vintage audio setups. I’m also a huge Sony fanboy, so naturally, I wanted to put together an all Sony system. I managed to pick up the entire setup (not all at once) from Facebook Marketplace for just $40 CAD!

I have two small speakers that came with the system, but I haven’t hooked them up yet since I still need to get some speaker wire.

The tall speakers make some cackling noise for some songs! but i looked it up and it seems as though i need to refoam the speakers and that should fix the problem.

The center speaker currently sits on top of the receiver inside the cabinet, but I’m planning to rearrange things so I can fit a CD player on top of the receiver. I’d also love to add a cassette deck to complete the setup, ideally another Sony, but I haven’t come across a good one on Marketplace yet.

A few questions for you guys:

  • What do you think of the setup so far?
  • What would you change or add to improve it?
  • Any tips or advice for someone getting into vintage audio?
  • Any particular Sony CD players or cassette decks I should keep an eye out for?

Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks!

Sorry but i'm unable to post a video to this post.

Purchasing EU/UK Audio Upgrade Advice for Media Wall | Currently Q Acoustic 3050 + B12

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all

My current media wall consists of a 86" TV with Q Acoustic 3050 floor standings I picked up from FB Marketplace for £150 and a Q Acoustic B12 Subwoofer to the side of the sofa.

It's all running on a Marantz NR1607 amp and it sounds good to me. But there is obviously room for improvement.

A friend of mine who is very much into his audio has suggested I could get an even better audio experience if I got some in-wall speakers whilst saving the floorspace (which my wife is desperate to get back).

He's suggested some JBL 6 66LCR's in the wall or some Monitor Audio Gold IW's

I was hoping some experienced budget audiophile members here could share what they think. I'm worried about spending a significant amount of money and it only feeling like a side-grade, or worse yet, a downgrade

Purchasing USA Is a subwoofer really worth it?

I am not all too familiar with this and I am wondering, how much of a benefit does a subwoofer really have?

I have Polk ES15 speakers and a WiiM amp

If they are worth it I don’t quite have the funds for a super nice one but if there’s a <$200 one that’s worth getting for the long run let me know of any recommendations.

Purchasing USA Kanto Ren or Homepod Pair?

Kind of a niche question but I haven’t been able to find anything about this. I currently have a pair of Homepods set up in stereo for my AppleTV. Overall, I love how they sound but AirPlay-only is annoying, and no analog input is even more annoying.

I came across the Rens recently and found a pretty good deal on them locally. Most of the reviews are great. I want to buy a pair and eventually add a sub to them.

My question is, does anyone have any frame of reference for how these actually differ in sound? I just don’t want to buy the Rens and realize they sound horrible compared to the Homepods since I wont be able to return them.
