Who won the $100M?
SHOW YOURSELF.
I just lost $94.50?

u/Morning_Song 2d ago
I did the opposite of win. Across my 5 games I didn’t match a single number
57
u/flammable_donut 2d ago
You should get a minor prize for that.

Great, Ill go to Japan.

u/Leading_Pass_9811 2d ago
I would tell no one, but there would be signs
13
u/Odd_Potato8489 2d ago
Well you can mask the signs, wait a few months, then claim you won a couple million on Saturday lotto and it's all gone on the mortgage and or new house.
2
u/Wild-Kitchen 1d ago
Thats is what I would do. And in the meantime, id be gifting money to community groups and not for profits that could do a better job with the money than me (leaving enough for me to retire on without being stingy).

I remember watching a story about a guy in the US who won 120m. He said "When you win the lottery, everyone around you think they've won it too". Pretty much over night all his friends and extended family tried using him as an ATM.
36
u/Frank9567 2d ago
Indeed, in the reported comments it's: "We've won $100m." Not the winner, but "we".
3
u/MischiefFerret 1d ago
Could've been her partner saying that
2
u/Frank9567 1d ago
If you read the linked report, she specifically says she bought a ticket separate from her family. She also uses 'me' and 'my' vs 'our'.
2
u/MischiefFerret 1d ago
Yeah, I'm guessing she meant wider family. Eg parents, siblings. Who knows - hopefully all goes well for them.

The way the story is worded it's possible they all had a ticket pool and is sharing it with family.

“We recently had a death in the family, and I think it’s a sign from them; they’re so looking after me! We’ve had signs all day from them; things moving, cans moving, bags waving in the wind.”
Urg, the worst kind of person to win it as well. From now on its going to be your fault you are not rich, you didnt pray hard enough.
70
u/OZ-FI 2d ago
Reading this there is a lot of water to flow under that family bridge yet. so many people already know she won and most wont keep their mouth shut. i wonder how many of them will be satisfied with any gifts she chooses to give out of her 100m. seems like she bought the ticket herself at the last minute, but shouts of "we won" in the background ?!. not a smooth road ahead for her.

u/switchbladeeatworld 2d ago
I hope she calls a good lawyer and accountant first thing in the morning lol
13
u/FUTFUTFUTFUTFUTFUT 2d ago
You don't get the money for a two weeks and as part of their win NSW Lotteries will recommend to the winner that they engage a lawyer, an accountant, and a financial advisor before the money lands in their account -- it's solely up to the winner of they proceed with obtaining advice though.

What’s wild about it? The chances are the same on a quick pick as they are if you “strategically” pick the numbers.
8
u/savinblak 2d ago
I think they are referring to the 12 part that’s not a lot of games for powerball isnt it?
3
u/namder321 2d ago
It's about $19 worth. Not a lot for a one off I'd say. I'm sure some people have weekly subscriptions of that much though.

Had an absolute shit day at work yesterday. Came home and bought a ticket. Convinced myself I was going to win so I could call in with a "F you' to the boss this morning.
Instead I'm out $21. I matched 4 numbers, twice, but apparently that gets you sweet FA.
SIGH.

Joining r/auslegal because I asked the newsagent for the winning ticket.
(Likely to be the least stupid question asked there today)
6
u/Monterrey3680 2d ago
Look, under Consumer Law you made it clear to the seller that you required the ticket for a particular purpose, and when the newsagent smiled and said “here you go” they agreed that the product was fit for purpose….that $100 million in damages is as good as yours

I had a syndicate ticket. It had 20 powerhit games. One of the games was 1 number off from winning division 1.
Still, winning division 3 & 4 off that 1 game was nice. From the whole entry the syndicate won $25,595. Split 126 ways I got $200. Not bad for a $5 ticket! But still...
16
u/Tribbs_4434 2d ago
Never spend big on lottery tickts, it really doesn't increase your chances of winning enough to justify the purchase. People have won big only spending $5 - it's a hail mary attempt at getting rich and you're always up against millions of other people so the odds are always pretty bad. Glad I won my money back, but that seems to be about as good as it gets the vast majority of the time.
7
u/RedRedditor84 2d ago
The price of the ticket reflects your chance. I did some maths a while back looking for efficiencies but all of the complex ways you can buy a ticket came out with the same odds-per-dollar. Fuck all.
Financial advice has never been "never spend big on lottery tickets", it's "never spend anything at all on lottery tickets". You're purchasing temporary hope. A fiction. Nothing more.
4
u/vegemitemilkshake 1d ago
The PowerHit tickets seem to have a pretty high percentage of jackpot wins. It’s usually what I’ll buy. Won just under $20k 2yr back. Last night I got $14.50 for my $31.50 ticket. I can continue to dream.
2
u/felixsapiens 1d ago
I agree. I do actually play lotto regularly. But I always only buy minimum ticket.
I think you’re right - buying more tickets increases your chance of winning by only an infinitesimal amount.
The old adage however is 100% true - you’ve got to be in it to win it.
So I try and play every game, but the minimum purchase. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday evening lottos, all the minimum 4 games. On top of that I get the smallest (2 game) Set for Life. Then for Super66 or whatever it is called I don’t regularly buy tickets, only if the jackpot hits $200,000; in which case I get like 2 tickets.
Costs me like $35-$40/wk for a chance of winning every night. A reasonable price. I’d never blow $40 on a single game.
2
u/Nosywhome 2d ago
This, I got a 4 game powerball quickpick years ago. Got 6 numbers and the powerball. Just one number was wrong. With 1:176 million chance, spending big seems nuts. You are either meant to win it or not.
7
16
u/Nosywhome 2d ago
Crazy to think 1 person won it, with how many people bought a ticket. Just shows how hard it is to win. What I don't like about powerball. No one needs that much money. Or maybe I'm just bitter I lost $6.30
6
2
u/SilconAnthems 1d ago
The analogy I use is if you imagine a 4k tv (actually think it's more like 8k) and only one random pixel turns on. Picking that pixel is about the same odds as winning Powerball.
6
u/mistercwood 1d ago
Not quite. Your analogy works with the 8k tv, but only if there's a warehouse with about 15,000 of them. You have to pick the single pixel on the right tv to win.
2
u/westeast1000 1d ago
What i dont get is if its all random, why is it the type of random where barely anyone wins. I’ve seen it even in roulette board almost fully covered and it falls on one of the few that no one bet on. I suspect we in simulation 😆

Exactly.
Our life at home wouldn't change an iota. Same cars, same house, same clothes.
Our Business though, all of a sudden it would 'finally hit its strides'. A combined before tax income of 600k/pa for life is more than enough for me.
4
u/sgtfuzzle17 2d ago
You know what I question with this: if nothing in your actual day to day life is changing, why bother? If you’re content with what you have, I don’t really understand the slightly toxic “hustle mindset” a lot of people on this sub espouse next to it. Why are you pumping money into your business to grow it if you’re not looking to get more out of it?

I just lost $94.50?
Why would you spend that much! Do people actually spend that regularly on lotto tickets? 😭
7
u/DownUnderPumpkin 2d ago
its all relative, its like 4 hours of work for some people, 1 hour of work for others and for some its like 1/4 of what they bill their clients per hour
1
u/Classic_Abies8621 2d ago
Still just seems like a massive waste considering the odds of winning! Like I'd understand $100 bet on a sports game or at blackjack but not when there's like a 99.9999% chance of losing!

Depends on their Expected Value outcome
2
u/morgecroc 1d ago
It doesn't actually matter for lotto math, it's a high risk investment. A skilled gambler betting $100 a week will never walk out of a casino with 8 figures neither would a skilled investment strategist investing $100/week over 40 years unless they dump everything into investing early in a unicorn near the end.
It's very high risk very very high potential return with a low barrier.

The EV looks amazing because people think a winning ticket gets the prize. But it acually shares the prize pool!
Expected number of winners of a $100m prize, given historical numbers of ticket buyers at that jackpot, is well over 1.
Then you get to the kelly criteron, which tells you how much of your stack to invest on positive EV bets with really low probabilities. And unless you have billions of dollar your bet should be under a dollar.
tl;dr not a goer.
