Someone’s got a nice fire going under the bridge at metric and walnut creek

That amount of heat can mess up the strength of the concrete and be a safety hazard, this bridge should definitely be inspected for spalling once the fire is out.

That happened at the I-35 and Woodlands bridge too I believe. The fire spiraled and got really big, left char marks all over the bridge, definitely needed inspection after

This seems unrealistic, like yes probably, but is this where the city starts listening to its citizens? Probably not

This doesn't look that big. I can't even see any flames, just the yellow glow of a fire on the other side of that pillar.
However, I agree with no fires under the bridge, especially if people are accumulating stuff under there.
Something seems odd about that picture, like maybe it's taken with HDR, which would make the glow look brighter.

They have been setting up under that bridge long before the paved sidewalk was there

You know from history how fast the United States government built CCC camps and even permanent structure in internment camps during World War II right? There's no excuse why we can't build camps with humane showers and bathrooms for these poor people.

That is just Sark and Arch Manning burning any semblance of playoff chances they have! Oh and they are burning any play that calls for a power running game with 4th and 2 3rd and 2 or less......They think those plays are witch doctor madness and should be burned....hence the fire under the bridges!!!

Except when it turns into a fire that could get out of control.

So yeah we'll move it from under an overpass in a visible area people can see and monitor to a wooded area behind a neighborhood where it'll be too late once called in. Smart.

Or they can just sober up and go to a shelter and or hop on a bus to a warmer place. Their bad decisions / bad luck isn’t a reason people should be having to worry about their neighborhood lighting on fire and their families and life’s possessions burning.

Oh, they can just sober up. Holy shit, why hasn't anyone thought of that? You should call the press and the governor and anyone else who will listen! You have solved homlessness! You're gonna win a Nobel Prize behind that amazing insight.

You're a true garbage person. Not ONCE in Austin has a homeless campfire burned down that neighborhood or ANY neighborhood. So we can toss that fake situation out. You don't know that these people are drunks or junkies. You don't know ANYTHING about them. Keep it that way. Like you always have.

"Not once in Austin has a homeless campfire burned down that neighborhood or ANY neighborhood."
Not sure how long you have lived in Austin but you are objectively wrong. There have been several incidents in this city where fires started in homeless encampments have caused significant damage to homes and/or property. In 2011, 21 homes were damaged or completely destroyed in SW Austin (Oakhill) due to a homeless campfire. There was also a major fire 5-10 years ago in S. Austin, near W. Ben White and Banister(?) that burned several apartments but I don't have a link for that incident.
Edit: For clarification, the Banister/Ben White fire was alleged by some apartment residents that lost their apartments that homeless campers in the adjacent site under construction caused the fire (they had numerous calls to the city reporting problems with homeless campers on the site) but the cause of the fire was not officially confirmed by AFD.

The fire you’re talking about on Banister was a condo project called Mesa. They restarted the project and finished it. Ironically, they are having issues with their fire suppression system. Of course, unrelated to the fire. Just shite construction, IMO.
I think the reason for the conspiracy was that the place across the street was being floated as a potential homeless shelter. It would have destroyed the value of Mesa and one theory was that it was not-so-accidental. Seems a little out there for me, but that was the talk around the water cooler in the development scene for a while.

Thanks for that background. Yes, arson by the developer could certainly be a possibility. But tenants burned out in the adjacent occupied apartments (where the fire spread) claimed homeless campers, known to be occupying the construction site, were causing repeated problems that the city apparently would not address. iirc, there was a long thread on r/austin discussing it. And at the time I thought AFD's "we won't be able to determine the cause", stated on the same day as the blaze before any investigation, was premature...but I'm not a firefighter.

How many of you people complaining about this or NIMBYing out supported the removal of homeless camps from under overpasses because this is what you get.

This is not unusual. When I lived up there, I called in several fires in that area off Metric. I don't know how they get them going, but sometimes it looked like a jet engine, like they lit a propane tank in an oil barrel. Respect the engineering for that, but no, you can't just be lighting infernos in the woods, my dudes.
