Perisher Dumping - I’m going skiing tomorrow

Post image

You can whinge and moan and stay home. Or get up tomorrow and go ski.

Hopefully the other resorts are getting some love out of this for their last day.

That's actually quite amazing.

In medicine, terminal lucidity is a known thing. Patient at the end of life perk up for a few hours to a day. They wake up, become more talkative, have improved appetite and then suddenly pass away.

Alas, I think this may be the last gasp for the '26 season.

Second wind haha.

There's a big low front in the tasman and with coriolis in the Southern hemisphere: lows going clockwise should shove a bunch of southerly cold wind in.

But it'll only be brief and it seems like it's most of the way towards Queenstown NZ tbh. Cardrona has had a ton of wind this week.

As the other doomer guy said I do wonder what's going on with ambient air temps though. Putting the wind and air currents aside and focusing on the global warming, it just doesn't look good sadly :(

These messages are the scared reality I've had for at least 20 years. It's the reason I wanted my kids to experience the snow. Because the reality is they probably won't as adults

It was the warmest winter in record. Between 1955 and 2000, the peak annual snow depth at Three-Mile Dam, at an elevation of 1,460 metres, averaged 55 centimetres, but during the past 25 years that figure has fallen to 34cm, a reduction of 38 per cent. It's not just a bad season it's a trend. https://snowdepth.info/

It’s been doing this for 100s of years. The will be higher than average season again. Australia’s always had bearish years. She’s been warm and dry, the late snow would’ve been a tell to all locals.

So modern human caused climate change started during the Industrial Revolution in the 1830s to 1850s, when widespread coal burning and land clearing began releasing measurable greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. So yes it probably has been happening hundreds of years and that's the problem. When you say alway, Australia is millions of years older than a couple of hundreds of years.

That was the point. As in we will get bad seasons and eventually the snow will come back. It always has, we’ve had really great seasons and some not so good. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the next generation is missing out. Sometimes if planning to go to the alps families have to change and pick a different year. There is zero way we aren’t getting freezing cold winters in the future, this season was just slightly warmer - not unusual just means a hot summer is coming.

Based off what? Because every other data point and indication is saying otherwise. But I can see you've made up your mind despite the evidence so there really is not point going back and forth.

‘26? Last gasp forever.

Well that is uncomfortable

It only just hit me now that it's possible that skiing may become something Australians can only really do overseas.

Here I was so worried about all the Pacific island nations I forgot that Selwyn snowfields could just stop being a thing soon, too.

Kids are in their teens and finally we saved enough for snow holiday for the family. Have spent about 4K we couldn’t afford to go to falls creek. Spent the entire time inside watching the torrential rain. There’s no snow and nothing to do. Devastated.

u/afewsparks Sep 05 '26

Sorry to hear, that’s really rough

5

u/Wintermute_088 Sep 05 '26

I'm so, so sorry.

u/Agreeable-Rich-8509 Sep 06 '26

This is devastating. Definitely would just go over to NZ next time if you get a chance, so beautiful, better pow and cheaper at this point!

You couldn't just cancel?? It was clear that the snow was going to be shit for months now.

1

u/OHBHpwr Sep 08 '26

You couldn't be helpful, so chose to be mean instead? Dang.

1

u/Lindethiel Sep 08 '26

I mean how far in advance do you have to book?? Six months?

If that's the case, you pay attention to what the weather patterns are doing. Every weather-based adventurer knows that. It's SNOW, not Disneyland.

Also,

You couldn't be helpful, so chose to be mean instead?

Helpful?? There is no helpful in this situation. I can't make it dump lol, nobody can. That's the point.

u/MelCarmichael Sep 11 '26

Booked 1 month ahead.

No refund available on our $1880 accommodation

u/Acceptable_Buy2087 Sep 06 '26

I’m so sorry. If ever possible, try and go to Japan instead. Much better skiing and snow, cheaper food cheaper beers.

Luckily the sun came out Sunday and had the best day ever snowboarding #bluebird

Kinda crazy this is happening whilst it’s 32c in Sydney with the beaches packed.

Love a spring dump!

I live quite close to perisher and I am also shocked.

I've been working outside all day in shorts.

Dumping

Hahahaha

Get up there for some sick powder runs!!

2

u/Enigma556 Sep 05 '26

Front valley face shots!

1

u/DrGruve Sep 05 '26

That’s almost 2” of snow! ⛄️🫠

5

u/Mister_Scribble Sep 05 '26

I’ve been hesitantly watching all sorts of weather reports as we’re here at Lake Crackenback one more day. It’s been torrential since early AM here, what’s left at Perisher took a huge hit today but has been a fun challenge dodging rocks and grass patches

3

u/poopborrylog Sep 05 '26

Hope it stays dude. Looks like it's supposed to turn to rain but fingers crossed.

u/MaintenanceAnnual263 Sep 05 '26

50mm

1

u/Scottybt50 Sep 06 '26

The only place it’s 50mm deep is that little pile in front of the ruler, everywhere else looks about 20mm or less.

u/Neverland__ Sep 05 '26

500mmm

Why are people down voting you? I thought that was funny

2

u/The_Outlaw_Torn_01 Sep 05 '26

We’re staying at Crackenback and about to load the car and head up. I’ll let you know how it is. We were there Thursday and it was more than acceptable for a couple of amateurs like us. Then we went to Thredbo Friday and it’s criminal that they’re still open, let alone charging full price for lift tickets.

1

u/FrewdWoad Sep 06 '26

Thredbo man. "What refund! Look there's some snow! I can see some up there somewhere!"

1

u/whatasadfella Sep 06 '26

Bro all winter and NOW we get it 😂 I know the mountains can be unpredictable after 1800 metres but come on!

1

u/Bretniq Sep 06 '26

Seriously, a week ago they were saying the seasons cooked.

1

u/little_miss_argonaut Sep 06 '26

You are going skiing I went stand up paddle boarding today. Gotta love Australian weather.

1

u/blade747474 Sep 07 '26

5cm over dirt does not equal fun skiing. It’s powder, rock, powder, log, scratch, grab an edge in something and crash into really hard ground without padding. Good luck.

1

u/Peckerbraintrain Sep 05 '26

I’m there and snow is bucketing down

Fuck now my town is gonna be busy again. I was so keen for all you city wankers to be gone.  Oh well, guess it's good for business.

r/AustraliaSnow does not allow harassment

1

u/wudeface Sep 06 '26

Look you might think you're funny, but assuming you're from Jindabyne, alot of businesses that then employ people are reliant on holiday makers. I would not be making them feel unwelcome.

-2

u/Nereosis16 Sep 07 '26

Literally said that in my last line.

Also, don't need to make them feel unwelcome when they are the rudest cunts you will ever see in your life; they do it to themselves.

1

u/CosmicCipherer Sep 07 '26

You’re clearly a delight from the sounds of it. I like those awful city dwellers 😂😂😂
