Discussion 💬 Summer heat protection

What do ppl do when it comes to summer heat with EV?

We're worried about those 40+days since we don't have garage or carport for it.

What do others do in this situation?

What did you do for the petrol tank in your previous car?

I syphoned the petrol into old milk bottles and put it in the fridge when the car was parked.

Got to be careful there, the petrol dissolves milk bottles slowly. Bit like how lithium iron batteries are in serious danger of turning into daemons

Daemon? Like a background process?

Old milk bottles were glass.

We turn on the air conditioning 15 minutes before we leave the house using our phone. Then enjoy an icy cabin, thinking maybe it’s too cold.

Nothing? Battery will self cool if required.

I park mine in an esky with some ice.

My model 3 lives in my work car park in the sun and in my driveway at home and has never had an issue. Is there anything specific about an EV you're worried about? Usual cabin protection such as sun shade, and good paint protection with UV resistance just as any other car would benefit from

Then maybe a froot...for front boot?

Tesla has cabin protection too.

Battery is under the car and sun/heat is above the car so no worries.

Modern EVs (at least the good ones) come with complex cooling systems for the battery. They’re more than capable of taking care of themselves.

Often there is a smart battery temperature setting to precondition and optimise the car battery that can be switched on especially before fast charging.

That’s the Battery Management System. It takes care of the battery and never lets it get too cold or too hot.

The batteries under the car sort themselves out.

But I think the best thing is many EVs come with an app and features like cabin overheat protection, so you can pre-cool the cabin without having to leave the house and without getting the car started

What exactly is the concern?

This has to be the most EV owner thing to say yet.

*new EV owner thing

I've tried leaving the windows a bit down but nope, the BYD is not having it. They go up when you lock it from the outside but not the inside. The only way I can figure is to reach in and lock it so it thinks you're still inside but I'm a bit worried about losing my arm meanwhile. Have a car port luckily.

WTF would putting the windows down do for an EV battery

1

u/Velo3x10e8 12h ago

Can't you roll the windows down in the app?

2

u/visioen 17h ago

Nothing to worry about, except the battery usage will be much higher.

2

u/deesernutz 11h ago

It'll just get warm. 40 degrees is not going to immediately kill your battery

Sun shade. Glass roof shade. Paint protection. Tinted windows. Makes no difference if it’s EV or ICE

Hi, my EV is parked on the street all the time. It’s 5 years old and is still fine.
The maximum temperature inside my frunk during summer was 51.6°C. That was during a heatwave in Sydney, where the car was parked in the sun on the street all day when the outside air temperature reached 44°C.
The maximum temperature inside my glovebox was 53°C. That was during a heatwave in Sydney, where the car was parked in the sun on the street all day when the outside air temperature reached 40°C and temperature inside the car went to 73°C.
The glovebox also went to 53°C in January 2026, during days of 43 degrees .
My car is a standard white 3 LR Dual Motor AWD Tesla, (no tints, coatings or wraps etc).
I do have a foldable windscreen shade which I use when parked on hot days, just like I used in my other cars.

There's no such thing as a frunk. This is Australia.

I'm all about resisting American words creeping in too but even I can't bring myself to call it a froot. Save the righteous anger for the all important trunk/boot, windshield/windscreen and parking lot/carpark battles.

1

u/thaleia10 10h ago

I like froot better than frunk.

1

u/No_Category_9888 3h ago

It is a frunk and has been for over 10 years now. Front trunk. Hope that helps.

I've heard the biggest determinant on battery aging is heat from the sun so I try to keep my car in shade during the hottest part of the day.

4

u/mean_as_banana 15h ago

Not heat from the sun, just the cells getting too hot. This should never happen for a modern ev, which will actively cool the battery when needed.

What car do you have?

1

u/Ok_Lunch_2933 16h ago

I put up my sunshade

Open the windows, you aren't supposed to sit, sleep in cars on 40+ hot days.

1

u/WhyAreYouNot 6h ago

Mine has a nap mode specifically for that though

Wrong forum mate, this should be in the AustralianFossilFuel subreddit.

What we with EVs do is precool our cars so they're perfect when we hop in, without turning on any pesky engines and blasting an exhaust out.

Hope this helps!

you pull your shorts down a little bit when getting into the car so you don't burn your skin on the seat vinyl...

It should actually be more efficient compared to cold weather. Maybe it ages faster but that's a good thing if you have it under warranty.
