HELP! I have a question. Paint question

Hello,

Have a paint question.

Shop is using Diamont Solvent, and lately on certain colors it seems to have a black hazy look thats stopping the color from popping. Like the color is there but its been dusted with black making it too dark.

Mostly happens on dark metallic especially blue, and happens on both rubber and metal. The painter seems to think the formulas have too much black tint in them

Anyone come across this, and have any idea what's happening?

Thanks

Sounds like the control coat isn't being done on the effect colors. Having sprayed Diamont solvent, not only is it required, it makes a difference

That is possible. I'll find out how he's spraying. Thanks!

I’ve had that problem with a few of BASF’s lines from diamont, 55, 90, and 100 line. Some colors straight up wash out. I think it’s an issue with relative viscosity. Almost like the mix separates as it comes out of the gun with the heavier toners landing last. It only occurred on a few colors I’ve shot, and ended up tinting to match. Whenever you bring it up to BASF they always blame the painter…. I’ve even had the tech rep spray it with the same result. They just say “huh” and nothing ever happens…

Like the guy above, id say add a little more correction binder, drop spray pressure a few lbs, and then do control coat somewhere in the 10-12psi range.

Thanks. I had a camera shot done and made with Lesonal. Painter is gonna do a spray out Monday. Not one formula in Diamont is even close, and im not wasting anymore time and money. And yes I've had BASF blame my painter and air pressure every time

That’s pretty much always their go to defense. Same when you want them to warranty a product failure. But, in their defense, most times it is the painter lol.

Do you have a picture?

Hard to tell because there's no sun today. But the metallic blue is in there, but drowned out by black

If the formula has any BC195 transparent white, that can wash out your fine pearls and metallics a little. Also adding in more BC101 flop control, like 10 percent increments per spray out can help. Without seeing the formula that's about the best I can think of. Have you tried adding more blue pearl and doing a spray out? Honestly that's where I would start.

Here is the formula we used

I would add 25 percent to the CB44L and do a spray out.

I spray Onyx HD which is BASF and those dark blue metallics are always a headache, they almost always come out too dark. Most of them call for a black sealer/undercoat which definitely helps with coverage but I’ve found they match better and brighten up a bit when using a lighter undercoat, but then it can take like 3+ coats to get coverage on some of them. Really annoying.
