Project time! Need help finding a good faster for fiberglass

Post image

Going about replacing my side skirts in my corvette and the previous owner used self tapper screw to secure it but that’s kinda a 1 time deal as the holes are too big to go back in with the same self tapper.

I could go up another size or try to patch the fiberglass and redrill it. I would love to do rivnuts but I’ve heard that can crack or damage fiberglass.

So yeah what should I do? I’ve seen someone recommend plastic rivets as a good solution and I was kinda planning on doing that. The only issue is if I use rivets and I have to drill them out they’ll be lost in the rocker panels forever 😭

Properly installed rivnuts will hold, I use them a lot in composite aero structures that experience wind loads and vibrations. If you have access to the back side a nut plate would be sturdier.

Unfortunately the panel is bonded onto the body and while it would be possible to remove definitely not easy for me at home

Don’t have one it’s just a fiberglass rocker bonded to the car

I would personally use a jack nut not a nutsert as it will likely cause damage.

They are for installing mirrors on old trucks like a 1978 Ford f150 and Chevy of the same time period and many more best luck op.
