Announcement Introducing "Seatbelts Fastened" Mode

Hi r/aviation community,

Recently, we’ve seen an increase in political and uncivil comments across several threads, particularly on posts involving aircraft associated with government officials. This has led to more removals and bans under Reddit’s sitewide rules, and we want to reverse that trend.

To help address this, we’re introducing a “Seatbelts Fastened” mode/flair. Posts with this flair (applied manually by the mod team) will restrict commenting to established community members. For now, that means users with at least 100 comment karma in r/aviation. If you are the original poster, your comments will not be affected.

You can view your subreddit comment karma by doing the following:

This will apply to a small subset of threads (aircraft incidents, government-owned/controlled aircraft, global legislation, etc.). The vast majority of posts (roughly 95%) will remain open to all users as usual. Please do not contact modmail requesting comment approvals or exceptions; we won’t be making individual overrides.

Thanks for your understanding and for helping keep the subreddit focused and civil.

Question Why do commercial aircraft test pilots wear these outfits? Is it in case they need to jump out of the aircraft in mid-air? Or do the test aircraft somehow have ejection seats like fighter aircraft?

Flight tests of the Electra EL-2 Goldfinch, an experimental hybrid STOL (short takeoff and landing) aircraft, are taking place over the Hudson River in New York. The aircraft performs maneuvers at extremely low altitudes, taking off and landing on a special floating pier off the coast of Manhattan, escorted by a helicopter.

I posted a picture of the Tu144D cockpit about a week back. Here is the full video.
Much more roomy than the Concorde, but feels 20 years behind it.

Could be totally off, but saw this happening from a ways away, so I know it’s not an optical illusion. Saw the smaller plane above, below, and on either side of the larger (presumably commercial) jet, matching speed the whole time. Never seen something like this

Question Is it common for aircraft to have a higher takeoff weight than max landing weight?

Why? What is the main limitation on how heavy an aircraft can be at landing?

History Can we have a thread to show some love to the fantastic aerobatic team that is the Canadian Forces’ Snowbirds?

They completed their final performance in their current aircraft today 🥲, and are now stood down, awaiting the full complement of their new machines before they return to the skies (anticipated sometime in the 2030’s)

I’m sure they are amongst us (both past and present team members), and I’m sure they’d appreciate it!

Post your favourite memories of their performances and/or meeting the pilots!

Can anyone tell me more information about what I’m looking at? Obviously a fuselage but just wondering what kind, where it’s from and where it might be headed? Just curious! Thanks all.

A 16-year-old boy and 80-year-old man have died following a light aircraft crash near Loch Lomond.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash at about 16:45 on Friday.
The boy and man were pronounced dead and their next of kin have been made aware, police said.
Temporary airspace restrictions are currently in place over the area while the Air Accidents Investigation Branch conduct their inquiries.

The Piper Tomahawk II aircraft took off from Glasgow Airport on Friday afternoon at 16:17.
It stopped transmitting at 16:37, a few miles north east of Drymen in Stirling.
Earlier the plane had taken off from Cumbernauld Airport at 11:46 on Friday morning, before flying 15 minutes to Glasgow Airport.
It stayed there until around 13:00, before doing a two-hour flight north east to Newport on Tay before turning round and heading back to Glasgow.
It was on the ground at the airport for just over an hour before it took off again and started its final flight.

Analysis TAIC identifies component defect linked to Airbus A320 engine shutdowns

I just stumbled across this aviation safety report from November last year.

An interesting read, but TL;DR:

An uncommanded shutdown of an Air New Zealand A320 engine was due to the *self-activation* of a switch.

Kinda nuts to think an engine could roll back because a switch spontaneously popped out of its latched position.

[OC] P-8 doing some touch and goes nearby…passed right over my house, didn’t even have to drive to the airport to get some decent shots.
