Discussie Is a MacBook BIFL? Why and why not?
Are you overall happy with your purchase?

No computer is ever close to BIFL, but if you plan to buy a computer with usage for at least a decade, then yes, MacBooks, or Apple computers in general are as close as BIFL as you want.
I'm still using my 2015 Intel MacBook Pro as a server to my personal collection of movies and tv shows, while I bought a new M2 Macbook Air a while ago. Even though the yearly upgrades make computers increasingly faster each year, I don't see the need to upgrade this laptop for the forseeable future since most of what I do is browsing and some light photo editing on this computer.
Even my desktop Mac is something I won't upgrade anytime soon since it's fast enough and all my software works perfectly fine.
It can be (it is) a steep price to invest in one, but it's a great investment if you ask me. Depending on what you plan to do with it of course.

It’s in my opinion the most BIFL a laptop you can buy.
Build quality is absolutely above most other brands but what I think is the absolute best part of it is: it’s MacOS and it’s unbeatable integration between software and all apple hardware like airpods, macbooks and iPhones.
Windows truly enshittifies itself with every single release. Ads, bloatware, shitty AI features. Forced integration with other garbage and half-baked Microsoft products. It’s got to the point i’m never touching a Microsoft product ever again.
MacOS today is fast, sleek and unobtrusive and it is still just as fast, sleek and unobtrusive 5 years from now. I have a Macbook Pro from 2013. Works perfectly fine. Sure MacOS has it’s own issues but they pale in comparison to using the absolute dogshit that is modern Windows.

No of course not. No computer, laptop, cell phone or anything like that has anything to do at all with BIFL.

This month they'll stop main linux support for x32. So if you keep to linux, you might be able to stretch it. Apple hasn't shown that dedication yet.

If you plan on living for 5-10 years then it's definitely BIFL. Given that no computer is even close to BIFL because of the constant rapid developments, I'm convinced that a Macbook is as close as you can get. I have a 2020 M1 Macbook Pro that's still running more than fine. I don't do really heavy stuff (like extensive video editing or whatever) on it, so I guess that helps in prolonging its live in terms of workability as well.
