BMW Saved my life. Or at least an expensive hospital bill

Can definitely say if I was in any other car I’d be cooked. I drive a 2021 M440i xdrive and Hydroplaned into a tree yesterday (was going the speed limit). Tried steering away from the tree so it the front driverside of the car and continued down before spinning me around.

Before I could even realize what happened a lady from the BMW center was talking to me through the speakers telling me where I was and what cross street and that she can see the airbags went off. I wasn’t really paying attention to her and the only thing I knew was that the driver door wasn’t opening (fire dept pried it open with the jaws of life later). The only thing I said was “I can’t get out”. I remember her saying “understood”. By the time I crawled out the passenger side (maybe 40 seconds) I could hear the entire city’s sirens heading towards me.

I walked away from that crash with only a sore left wrist and some scrapes from the airbag. Didn’t even need to go to the hospital. I think if I was in any other car. I would’ve been cooked

After passing my test last week at the ripe old age of 26, having initially failed in 2020 (which I was heartbroken about for a long time), I thought what better way to celebrate than to buy the finest hatchback of them all. Still can't believe it, doesn't feel real...

Yesterday I got a chance to sit in this. Here are my thoughts

TLDR; was expecting more got disappointed

Local dealer brought this “pre production” car to its shop and invited people to check this out. There was no many people around, just a few folks.

Anyway, I was enthusiastic about this neue klasse, now I am not anymore. FYI I am driving G20 330i RWD and looking for replacement, this G50 was high on my list.
Car looks better on pictures than irl imho. Maybe it’s a colour or something. Also looks much better with lights on than without. Iconic how can be disabled.

Inside.
Tbh this egg shape M steering wheel is not an issue at all. You can quickly get used to it. Sitting position is also great, close to perfection. However I don’t get this panoramic vision stuff. This is too much for me. I am not sure how you are supposed to control RPM’s.

Also this skewed infotainment is weird. Yeah it works fast and quite responsive but it also has some tiles on the left which you have to scroll on diagonal which is unintuitive for me.
Also i got an impression that there is less space inside than in my G20.

Materials? Quality build? Solid, but it doesn’t feel expensive. I heard dealer saying that almost everything inside is from recycled materials so it should give you some sort of intuition.

To sum up, i think I was more into it before I saw it in person. My wife hated it. Maybe it would grow on me, saw configs in red colour and black rims and it looks kinda of cool, but this one? I couldn’t feel BMW inside if you know what I mean.

(Edit: I may've been reaching with this one but I just thought it was a fun comparison.)

The Alfa Romeo SZ and the new BMW 3-series kinda look like each other.

E90/e92 owners come to mind

“N52’s underpowered trash, n54 is faster”

“You’re all wrong the n55 reigns supreme”

*S65 owner appears after changing his rod bearings “no I’m the fastest and the best”

Aggressive drivers

Just bought my first BMW. A CPO i4, nothing crazy, but I do love it as my commuter car. Only issue is I swear people are so much more aggressive than they were with my old car. I get people cutting me off pretty bad on the freeway with no signal (was merging onto the freeway yesterday and this dude in a ford freaking EDGE used the coned off construction zone to cut me off), pretending like they’re going to ram me in parking lots, and using my turn signal = the person nexts to me floors it. At this point, it’s only the other BMW drivers who don’t f*ck with me 😭 I don’t drive crazy by the way, I’m a keep up with traffic in the middle kind of person lol

Has this been your guy’s experience too? Is this just life now? I do live in a town where we have tons of accidents and a high rate of uninsured drivers so maybe it’s just a bad sample size.

Clean N55 inside today - Change your oil folks

Thumbnail

94k miles on my 2016 N55. Oil changes every 5-8k, average of 6k OCI's, longest since new was 8,300-mi. Mostly Quaker State Euro 5-40w, but recently switched to M1 0-40w with the LL-01 reapproval.

Essentially no eccentric shaft wear, everything looks new.

I’ve seen enough of other photos following the CBS at 10-12k OCI's and it always looks terrible inside. Varnish, dirt etc. Change your oil folks, no need to go nuts at 3k, cut the CBS in half though.

Heads up

Hello there. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Lately I've noticed some failures on front differentials popping up. I've currently got a 22 x5, 22 x7, and 17 7 series with failed front differentials. The x's are both right at 50k miles, the 7 series is at 105k miles. Both of my coworkers have a few of their own, all seem to be right around the 50k mile mark. Might be a coincidence but with BMW revising their transfer case maintenence on new cars, might be a good idea to change the front differential fluid or all awd fluids at the same time. FYI

What was the publics reaction to the E90/F30/G20 3 series when they were revealed.

Having seen some of the comments on the new G50, I'd be interested to see what people thought of the previous generations of 3 series before this one. Mainly looking at all new 3 series since the Bangle era cars like the E60 5 series and the E65 7 series.

Thinking about how I remember it perceived, the E90 was a lot less controversial than the E60 launched 2 years prior, the design of the F30 looked fresh and the design of the G20 was perceived to be more grown up than it's predecessor.

Thoughts on whether the initial reaction of the 3 series at the time is not a reflection of what it is when it has aged.

Help settle a debate: what is THE quintessential BMW paint color?!

Debate turned argument with a friend about the colour that a BMW car should be associated with and b) is considered the color that epitomises the brand. He said portimao blue for reasons I will not even get in to.

A bit of a predicament

Hi everyone. A couple months ago my grandpa gave me his 1972 BMW 2002. The car was last registered around 7 years ago and has been sitting out for a while now. My Grandpa gave a great rundown of the basic things it needs. The only thing I'm worried about cost wise is the interior as it's pretty moldy. I did a pretty good job cleaning everything else though! Exterior+engine bay.

Now, I just graduated highschool and go to school in SoCal (originally from NorCal). I'm currently dorming and had plans of working on the car over the summer. What I didn't expect is my dad telling me he got a new job and is moving the family to Colorado Springs.

Now my dad said he can ship the car to Colorado and we can work on it together there. But the hard part is that when it is up and running I'd love to bring it with me to school. But would the car be able to last through a 20 hr trip to SoCal from CO in the long run?

My dad is also looking into getting me an e30 bmw for my first car. But with being so far from home, I'm worried that I won't have a reliable daily like I'd dream of. I'm in love with the older boxy bmws and can't wait to work on them more and learn. But what's the smartest move here?

Are there better BMW's I should look into that could make long trips back and forth? Should I be prepared to leave the 2002 in Colorado forever?
