If there is “gore” aka feeding or injuries, please just use the spoiler tag. Reddit is labeling educational subs as NSFW if there are too many posts with the tag. This severely limits who will see the sub or posts. Thank you guys! 🫶

Here is a couple helpful guides to help you decide if your BP is a healthy weight! Link below for what to do if your snake is overweight or underweight! And don't forget to check our community resources for a proper growth guide as well!

Always remember that in cases of severely emaciated animals to always take them to the vet before trying to treat at home as this is a life threatening condition and not to be taken lightly.

While I think I'm going to keep them all after these insane results I'm the happiest about the het tri female 🥹 I grew really attached to her and was dreading the possiblity of having to part with her. I'm even more attached now that she'll be the key animal for making Tri-stripe Hypo TSK Ax. It's going to be really hard to find the perfect name for her.

But while trying to feed

Hello all,

Coming to you guys with some concerns I have from today, I have only had success feeding my ball python live rats, today was feeding time and I wanted to try frozen again one because I have read it is a lot safer for them and because I am nervous to put a live rat into the new tank with sliding doors. I heated the rat did everything the way I’ve seen and when I reached into the tank he was watching the rat as I thought or as I now realize my hand and bit and wrapped on the tip of my finger, I got him off and back into the tank but one of his teeth came out with my finger. More worried about his over all well being and what I can do to better his living and my future interactions. This is a little heartbreaking as he bit me once prior while holding and I had just recently gotten back over the fear of another bite. Any advice on help for him would be greatly appreciated thank you. He is also a snake who never bit any prior owners.

EMERGENCY/URGENT heat bulb and source reccs

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

so i got a ball python the other day and ive been trying to get her heat right, shes currently in a 27x15x12 ( befode anyone comes at me shes a baby baby, the runt of her clutch as her breeder says so shes little) shes in a pvc enclosure. of course, with pvc enclosures theres light fixtures inside so the bulb is inside her enclosure.

with her heat i have tried two bulbs already one 75w and one 50w and each have severely over heated the enclosure (the hot side getting to about 100), ive caught it quickly each time and ive turned them off and opened the enclosure doors to give out air and cool it down enough to mid 80's.

my dilemma is why are the bulbs over heating the enclosure so bad? what am i doing wrong? would a nano bulb work for her instead? were contemplating taking off the lid of her enclosure and adding in a screen lid so her lighting can be on top.

i feel like a bad mom right now because i know the changes are stressing her out and i just want her to be able to comfortably adjust to her new home

this is my first ball python n my first with pvc so pls be nice 🥹🙏 just want the best for my girl

Question Advice on cold side of enclosure

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have an enclosure that has a cold side that's a little too chilly. It was fine when the weather was warm but now that it's a little cooler in the house that side is too cold now. If I add another heat source it throws off the gradient and humidity. Because of the design of the top I'm limited in where I can place a heat source. Any advice on how I can fix this or is this temp ok for now? The enclosure is a 40 gallon glass. (Temporary accommodations for my newest noodle in quarantine.) Currently my noodle is in his cold hide and I'm afraid he's going to get too cold.

Question Wrong calking

So, I'm getting my 4x2x2 terrarium set up to welcome a snake into our family soon. Initially I sealed the tank with marien sealant caulking. However, with how strong the smell was even after several days I began questioning. I couldn't see that chemical smell doing any favors for a sensitive snake. So I did some more digging and realized I need aquarium sealant which makes a lot of sense.

I've spent the last several hours removing caulking and scraping off residue and vaccumuming out every last bit of the marien caulking I possibly can.

So now my question is, before i put the aquarium sealant on, is there anything further I can do to the tank to remove any toxic residue?

I'm glad I caught this before we decorated or put the snake in there I'm a bit scared I've ruined this expensive tank. We definitely can't afford to just scrap it. Any ideas people have are welcome.

Advice Underfed rescue not gaining weight.

Post image

I rescued Eoghen, a 6 year old blue eyed leucistic at the beginning of July. At 6 years old he weighs barely over 600 grams. He was kept in an enclosure with inadequate heat and humidity for the first 6 years of his life which likely contributed to his stunted growth. I'm consistently feeding him a small rat every 14 days. The rats are typically around 40 to 60 grams in size (frozen thawed). My question is should I continue my current feeding schedule or bump him up to every 10 days for the next 8 to 10 weeks and then reassess the weight? I do have an established exotic vet that I use but I didn't want to jump the gun and take him in to see her prematurely.

Pic of Sir Eoghen for tax.

Advice Needing advice from experienced handlers.

I brought this cutie home 4 weeks ago. He's roughly 3 years old. I've only handled him once to put him in his enclosure after I brought him home. I have left him alone other than to feed, change water and clean. I've had snakes for years but this guy has me stumped. The introduction to his enclosure went well and he calmly explored it for about 30 to 45 minutes before settling down in a hide. He came out to explore each night for the first week. The second week I fed him a small rat and he ate like a champ. He's had one shed and that was in one piece. Since his first feed he's been in his warm hide 24/7. Now any time I touch his enclosure to open the door he immediately pokes his head out and gets into the strike position which he wasn't doing the week before I first fed him. I'm not sure if he's just staying in food mode or if he's truly defensive and needs more time to settle in. Or he's associated the sound of the enclosure lock with food?? He's still in quarantine so I haven't put him in my snake room yet with my other snakes yet. His husbandry is good with the warm side staying at 89°, cold side at 78° and humidity gradient of 65% to 85%. Multiple hides and plenty of clutter with no big open areas. My question is should I give him more time to adjust or just go for it and try to start handling him so he can start getting used to me? He's my 5th ball python. I've not experienced this with any of my other snakes during acclimating. I've been a keeper for many many years but this guy has me stumped. I did feed him again the other day and he ate fine that time as well. Any advice is appreciated.

Discussion Update and thanks

Before and after gathering advice from this subreddit, I almost impulsively bought a 9-month 280-gram OD pied ball python and got a generic Thrive 40-gallon kit to keep it in.

And ofc I got criticized because at first I didn’t even have a thermostat, so I read everything and regulated the humidity and temperatures and today I finally got a 4-foot enclosure and it looks amazing. Thanks to all of you.

Thx so much to u/Kalomay for picking a name for my boy! I'm still waiting on an update for my other boy (who I'm not sure what to call him yet...) but I got some more pictures of him and he's even more sweet than I thought! No head wobble but does eat live... We'll get him on frozen thawed in no time though! I'll be picking him up in 2 weeks so I can't wait to set everything up for him!

BP enclosure heating help

So I have a 4x2x2 zen 3.0 enclosure. Top mostly covered with HVAC tape beside where heating is located sitting on the mesh. Also have a silicone mat on half to help keep heat in. Herpstat 1 was set at 88 but temps were too low. Herpstat was reading at 88 but warm side thermometer is reading at 78 degrees and 56% humidity. Cool side is reading 71 degrees at 69% humidity. I raised herpstat temp to 92 and warm thermometer seemed to go up to 80 so far. What can I do to get heat up? I use Zoo Med Combo Deep Dome Dual Lamp with a 100 watt DHP in each socket.

Her terrarium was moved to where now she can't see my TV. She got a little less active without the TV and has been trying to peek over the top whenever she hears my TV is on. So I got a cheap $3 TV from a pawn shop and a Roku stick from my brother. Can you tell what she's watching?

Would it be irresponsible to get a python with a rabbit?

I love reptiles, I had a gecko for a little while now I think maybe a snake could be great for the space in my heart! i have a rabbit who is locked up at night, but I was wondering if there’s any chance that the python could escape and kill the rabbit?

Question First time ball python owner are these mites I should be worried about???

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Im sure this gets asked alot but I want to make sure my little guy is safe. Had him for a little over a year, put him in a new enclosure maybe two/three months ago. Im now noticing these little mites. Ive seen smaller ones that look pale/white which are worrying me but those are very few, I see them around his poop, enclosure doors and on the thermometer. These bigger ones im only seeing in the water bowl. I checked his underbelly and face and I don’t see anything on him. Is this something I should be worried about and what should my next steps be. Any advice is appreciated!!

Tldr: What are these?? Are they bad?? Okay?? Theres also small white ones??
