Victim is publicly named here:

Leading with the bleeding, Abdullah Reed, Senior, 52, known as Dubby to friends and family, was shortly after 8:00 p.m. fatally mauled by a pit bull––either his own, or a pit bull he was walking for an as yet unidentified relative, about a mile from his home on a quiet back street in St. Petersburg, Florida, half a block from the Clam Bayou Nature Preserve.

“Preliminary autopsy findings,” the St. Petersburg Police Department announced in a prepared statement, indicated that Reed “suffered life-threatening dog bites to the neck and shoulder.”

Responding to calls about an injured man lying in the street, police “found the victim bleeding and unresponsive,” with a leashed pit bull guarding his body.

Cop shot the pit bull to allow rescuers to approach

“The dog would not allow rescue workers to approach the victim to render aid,” the police report continued. “Then the animal became agitated and began to aggressively bite the victim further; that’s when an officer fired his weapon and killed the dog.

“The victim was already deceased when rescue workers were able to get to him.”

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, “Investigators learned the dog belonged to the victim.” However, Samantha Bennett, an art teacher in Lumberton, North Carolina, posted repeatedly to comment strings on news reports about Reed’s death that “His aunt says not his, but a relative’s.”

Pit bulls were a problem in the neighborhood

Three current and former residents of the neighborhood mentioned other pit bulls running amok at the scene on earlier dates. If any were present, Reed might have been killed while trying to keep the dog he was walking out of a fight.

Many people are wondering if the owner "had a medical emergency during the walk" and the dog reacted aggressively, which is something some dogs dog in medical emergencies. Others wonder if something "set the dog off".

"Many people" = pit nutters trying to make this look normal.
It's not "some dogs"; only pits and pit-likes will immediately jump to 'kill you' mode the moment something unusual happens. When you own one, this is one of the interesting events that can happen.
A normal dog might guard you or even call for help but the moment a pit smells blood in the water, it's chow time. It's absolutely shameless to try to lump pits together with other dog breeds.

If a human, a wild animal, or something else did this, the news would be all over it and point out how horrific it is.
But when a pit does it? Meh, it happens. Carry on.

As always, better the owner than an unsuspecting stranger, but this shouldn't be happening to anyone.

Yeah, anytime someone is killed by a wild animal it’s HUGE news. Crazy that these stories aren’t. I find this even more disturbing because most of us will never encounter exotic animals but pits are everywhere.

The "medical emergency" being getting your throat ripped out by your own shit dog, and it reacting by liking it and going fucking ham. Fucking shameless imbeciles.

Including all the deluded excuses pisses me off, but at least they're not pretending it's something other than a pit, mix or not.

Good excuse to get your flu shots.

Unless you experience side effects.

That might set you up for surprise medical intervention from Dr. Pibbles M.D. .

"Sorry, I had to put him down"

Goes both ways, doesn't it.

Some dogs do not attack their owners during a medical emergency.

I get panic attacks and my dogs’ first instinct is to lick my face and find another human.

"What set the dog off? Why did it attack?"

Because it is a pit bull and it is what they do.

Not 100% of the time.

Not every dog, but often enough no one is surprised that this dog was a pit.

Exsanguination. A classic PB signature.

RIP, Mr. Reed Senior.

Sounds like the many wondering people sounding surprised and puzzled about why a dog would kill its owner are either willfully ignorant, uninformed, or in denial. These dogs will decide when it's their owners' time to die; there are many such cases out there of the exact same situation, and the PB owner was found dead with its pet. These terrifying cases are a warning and an opportunity that allows a joining of the dots conclusion.

So to summarize dog kills owner, dog is killed, no one else is injured.

I almost died from unrecognized internal bleeding..my golden laid next to me..wouldnt let me go to sleep..nudged me and licked me awake every time I fell asleep... finally when I dragged myself to shower he jumped in with me despite hating baths. I felt horrible but I had a very important trip I was leaving for.  When he jumped in the shower and would not get out I realized maybe he knew something I didnt.  I drove to the hospital that luckily was very close and passed out into the arms of the security guard who ran up as he recognized I was grey.  A week and 4 units of blood later I went home and he was back to normal. No chewing my throat out no biting me, no knocking me down..just hours of persistent patient warning no matter how much I fussed at him to go away. He saved my life.

"others wonder if "something set the dog off." - Yes. What set it off was the dog's natural inclination to murder all living things.

Why aren't these attacks getting more media attention? Is it because the pitbull lobbyists control the media? People protest far more trivial things than children being maimed. If a person states they don't like these dogs then it always turns into an attack on the person's morals and integrity. Pitbulls breed like rats with large litters, and there are many videos of their puppies fighting amongst themselves as per their nature. What is it going to take for people to come to their senses? Lawn Darts were banned for far fewer injuries than pitbull attacks.

Must be. But then they have the audacity to claim it's the opposite and that pitbulls are OVER represented by the corrupt mainstream media or whatever the excuse is. It's ridiculous.

So sad but the owners are so die hard about it being "all IN HOw THEY'RE rAiSeD" that one has to wonder if when the owner gets nannied to death they aren't able to comfort themselves in their final breaths with the delusion that this was somehow their own fault and not in fact genetics meeting up with reality. So glad it wasn't an innocent person, animal or child.
