The only thing Lance Armstrong did wrong was get caught. It is still prevalent in the sport.

I have to say as a dude who has pretty large legs from my love of squatting and torturing myself on leg days… yeah, it’s hard as shit to find pants that fit with even normally large legs. I can only buy athletic fit, and even those are slightly tight.

To be fair, to crank that gear over takes some major torque. Those folks are legit strapped into those bikes for absolute power output. While I’m sure he has dedicated himself beyond most anyone would, I’m sure he loves some afternoon juice as well.
Edit - damn this blew up. Honestly to those who are saying ‘why juice! He’s natural blah blah. In the day and age we live in of misinformation - just open Facebook or watch most news channels, they BLATENLY lie to your face. My comment, shouldn’t be your concern. It’s one thing to post your opinion responding to the whole thread, another thing to MAKE the thread the blatent lie.

He has myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy, a genetic disorder (MSTN gene) rarely found in humans, but common in certain animal breeds i.e. belgian blue cattle. Natural hgh supply 👀
22
u/mekwall Sep 03 '26
The Belgian Blue comparison is interesting, but there's an important caveat with Förstemann specifically.
He has said that he believes he has a congenital problem with myostatin, which normally acts as a brake on muscle growth. However, he has also said that he never actually had this genetically tested. I can't find any published genetic testing showing that he carries an MSTN mutation.
So saying "he has myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy caused by an MSTN mutation" is stronger than the available evidence supports. It's more accurate to say that Förstemann and others have attributed his unusually easy muscle growth to possible myostatin dysfunction.
Belgian Blues are different in that their MSTN mutation is very well established. They have a loss-of-function mutation in the myostatin gene that was heavily selected for through breeding, producing the famous "double-muscled" phenotype.
And neither case is really "natural HGH." HGH promotes growth, while myostatin limits muscle development. Myostatin deficiency is more like removing the brake than pushing harder on the accelerator.
7
u/gl_Frustum Sep 03 '26
You're right, i'm german and remember an interview with him about that. Should have read up on it. So it's muscle growth is not inhibited as intended rather than actively promoted.

Yeah, wouldn't a myostatin disorder affect more than just one muscle group?

Well yea but also professional cyclists thighs typically don’t look like that, this guys just on roids
28
u/Nearly_Pointless Sep 03 '26
I raced with a guy who was 150 pounds at 6’. His legs weren’t notable in terms of visual size or even definition. However that man was absolutely astonishing on the bike. He could hold a pace that would wear people out for hours. His biggest asset was his aerobic system, it muscle mass.

He was a track rider. Very short distance, single gear, sprinter.

Heh, not looking like other professional cyclists would usually imply the opposite.
17
u/geT_raineD Sep 03 '26
Idk why the comments are all accusing him of roids. This guy is called „Quadzilla“. Medical experts suspect he may have a rare genetic variation related to a myostatin deficiency, which allows for naturally unregulated muscle growth.
5
u/Aromatic_Bar2263 Sep 03 '26
You mean the guy on roids has a cool nickname too? And an excuse he could easily prove but doesn’t?!

Since it is such a demanding sport many PEDs are first introduced in cycling. During the Tour de France these guys will burn 7000 to 8000 calories a day.

False rumor, drugs can make you Impotent, but the "fact" that they make your penis smaller is false...
The reason for this rumor is mostly from people comparing a bluge of body builders with the legs, and mentally compare it to a normal human... but most body builder legs are simply 2-3x the size of normal legs, so it's mostly the size of the legs that makes the bulge look small in comparison.

4
u/Trevski Sep 02 '26
Definitely has been. Track cycling isn’t as tightly controlled but road cycling (for obvious reasons) have “biological passports” to detect epo and blood doping, and midnight surprise testing during the Tour de France this year. So whatever they’re taking now must be some next gen shit

No that's just steroids (36 years old guy here, been cycling since age of 10,still have no car because of driving phobia and my whole life i cycled to go everywhere needed and I say 100 percent it doesn't give you enormous thighs) ps: also read your disagreement comments below and to answering them i must say I don't say cyclists and athletes don't go through pain to gain big goals or my bike riding for life is supposed to give me this body, I'm saying after 26 years of bike riding at least should i at have big kinda muscly thighs or not? But it's not happening.also pretty sure this kinda physics is absolutely made by steroids. Not gonna be a bigot about this but pretty sure it's steroids

u/CatsAreGods Sep 02 '26
There's cycling to go places, and then there are track sprinters at the top of their game. In the world.

No but the 300lb+ Bulgarian squats he does probably has something to do with that, or maybe the 5-600+ squats… yeah sometimes that gives big quads

Similar physique to Eric Heiden, 29” thigh circumference. They even have had the same training regimen of cycling and power squats.
