I know baseball has rules for everything. Is there a rule for this though? It looks like it changed the trajectory of the ball after it hit the bat the second time so in a way it interfered with the ball.

u/Daratirek 21d ago
Nothing changes I believe. The batter didn't cause this so its considered part of the randomness of the game. Fielder has to make an adjustment to try to make the play

u/orangepalm 20d ago
If the fielder fails to adjust, does that count as an error?
129
u/Daratirek 20d ago
Nope! The official scorer, who makes the determination, takes into account everything about the play. Generally if a ball makes a weird deflection it just counts as a hit. For instance its not uncommon for a pitcher to get hit by a batted ball and the batter to make it to first. No one gets an error for that, even the pitcher.

Rule 6.05(h) specifies the case of interference wherein a foreign object contacts the ball:
After hitting or bunting a fair ball, his bat hits the ball a second time in fair territory. The ball is dead and no runners may advance. If the batter-runner drops his bat and the ball rolls against the bat in fair territory and, in the umpire’s judgment, there was no intention to interfere with the course of the ball, the ball is alive and in play. If the batter is in a legal position in the batter’s box, see Rule 6.03, and, in the umpire’s judgment, there was no intention to interfere with the course of the ball, a batted ball that strikes the batter or his bat shall be ruled a foul ball.
because a broken bat is considered no intention to interfere with fair play the ball is considered live and in play.

I wanted that to be a fake rule/post so badly.

Baseball is the weirdest, most awesome sport there is

It's the precursor to D&D, down to rule changes for balance, a special map, and player stats.

There's an American Dad episode where Steve gets to edit the rules of major league baseball and makes it more like DnD. It's hilarious chaotic!

It is so much fun going to the local minor league baseball game and getting hot dogs and a beer.

It would likely be considered the same as if the base, wall or mound would redirect the ball

So, ground rule double.
A ground rule double and an automatic double (two different things) both involve the ball becoming unplayable. In the former the ball is still on the field of play but is stuck somewhere like between two sections of padding on the outfield wall where no fielder can reach it. An automatic double involves the ball bouncing over the outfield wall and out of play, but because it bounced it isn't a home run.

Hunter Pence once hit a ball 3 times with the whole bat still in his hands
2
u/BentleyLeDog 21d ago
And then what happened?
3
u/Aerolithe_Lion 20d ago
The way ball hit off the bat tricked the shortstop because it kind of ricocheted 3 different directions…. 3 run double

The physics of this is very interesting. I would have expected more energy to transfer to the ball causing it to be moving faster than the bat shard.
75
u/franz4000 21d ago edited 16d ago
I think the ball was initially moving faster than the *bat shard, but:
The ball was moving at a diagonal angle toward the ground rather than parallel with the bat
The ball covered more distance than the bat
The ground absorbed some of the ball’s force and slowed it down

I know this is many days late but you also didn't mention the bat had a ton of angular momentum which on collision transfered to translational momentum of the ball. (The bat was spinning giving it extra power when it contacted the ball)

u/ujtheghost 21d ago
It just entirely depends on the moment of the swing where the bat piece gets properly detached from the handle. Because the earlier it did that, the less energy of the swing was transferred to the ball.

u/pheight57 20d ago
I mean, it certainly did after the bat imparted a bunch of rotational energy to it with that second hit... 🤷♂️

u/Canadian_Border_Czar 20d ago
The bat breaks in 3 spots, and glances the ball sending it into the ground.

Back when vladdy could hit so well that he'd hit the ball twice with one swing!

Hunter Pence once had a broken bat hit a ball no less than three times and put such a wicked spin on the ball that an infielder failed to catch it because the ball was moving in a way he had never seen a ball move before. That was in game seven of the 2012 NLCS. The team accidently sold the bat after the game, but when the fan who bought it heard they wanted to put the bat in their museum, he returned it to the team.
When Hunter Pence hit the ball 3 times with 1 swing 🤯 #mlb #baseball

Baseball gurus love statistics. I wonder if they could calculate the odds of this happening?

u/TheNewYellowZealot 21d ago
50/50. Either it does or it doesn’t.

u/sybban 20d ago
No, it’s a 100% because it happened

It’s the BBIPAHTBA metric
Batted balls in play after hitting the bat again.
He gets a 575 here. Almost a 600. But that’s just silly

u/No-Lock216 21d ago
i would like to know the odds aswell :D

The baseball statisticians couldn’t, but an actual mathematician or statistician probably could.

u/KarmaSilencesYou 21d ago edited 21d ago
I believe that the ruling on this is that it’s automatic out.
Edit: I stand corrected any shattered bat that comes into contact with a fair ball is uncontrollable by the batter and the ball is treated as live.

I give it a year before a baseball themed anime makes this a game ending play done on purpose by a protagonist.

If it weren't for capitalism and the wage slavery we have to endure to barely make rent and food, humans would have developed a game where this epic shit was intentional DECADES ago.
