Miscellaneous / Others A father kept a paper tie made by his daughter when she was only 5 years old for 24 years. On her wedding day, he finally wore it.

I can only imagine the conversation they had when she saw it.
"I never saw you wear it, I thought you hated it or threw it away!"
"I didn't want to ruin it, so I saved it for an important day."

I think it’s more realistic that she had no clue she made that for him, and he first had to explain.

Or the father often told her that he was keeping the tie, showing it to her throughout the years while reminiscing, saying he’ll wear it to her wedding. So this was an inside joke that everyone in the family knew for decades.

I like this version. I can picture her giving to him as a five year old:
“Daddy do you like it??”
“Of course sweet heart I love it!”
“Are you going to wear it?”
“Oh, uh… you know what, this is a super special tie. I need to save it for a special occasion. How about your wedding?”
“Oh good idea daddy!”
Maybe his wife overheard this and ribbed him a bit for it later
“You know dear, you might have a hard time finding a jacket to match that tie” etc.2

If one of my kids made me that tie, that matches with anything and everything I could possibly wear.

I genuinely wonder how that went. I think if he cared enough to keep it, it was probably a sweet moment between them.
When I was around 5 I made my dad a paper tie and I really wanted him to wear it when we went to a firework show. It was July 4th and I made it dark blue with fireworks all over. This man who supposedly always wanted to have kids and who had me at 49 told his 5 year old “Oh no, I’m not going to wear that I don’t like to look silly.” Broke my little heart. My mom told him that I was crying and it started a massive fight. Ahh memories. Reddit really got me with this one..10

I'm sorry your dad committed a Dad Fail. Gotta love those formative memories.
One of the many reasons why I love my husband is because he'll make a complete fool of himself, even in public, if it'll make me or our daughter happy. He would've worn that tie with pride.

Oh he never missed an opportunity to fail his kids unfortunately. Haven’t spoken to him or my mom in over 4 years. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My husband had a daughter very young and watching how he was with her when we were dating was a huge part of why I fell for him. She would paint his nails and he would never clean them after, he wore her work with pride. Now he has 2 girls and he would do anything for them. My kids will never have to wonder if their parents love them

Someday, somehow, you will be the person he should have been to some little kid. And when you do I hope don’t think of him at all.

This actually made me tear up. I have an 18 year old bonus(/step) daughter and a 3 year old daughter that I made myself lol. I’ve done a lot of work on myself, gone to therapy, changed my whole perspective. But I was so scared that I wouldn’t be able to let go of my own issues to be truly there for them. I still am at times but so far I’ve found it to be the most rewarding part of my life. Instead, I’ve found that being there for them and being silly and vulnerable has given me a strength that I know my parents never had for me or my siblings. And I know that I fight to keep that strength for my kids and myself. And I only think of them occasionally, I just wonder how they could let themselves out their feelings first and I pity them because I know what they missed out on.

My headcanon is it was stuck in that little gap between the dresser mirror and the frame

She 100% does not remember making it
3
u/antilumin 1d ago
Why, because she was 5? I remember when I was that young I made a clay pendant for a necklace, gave it to our cantankerous neighbor who never left his house. Just slipped it in his mailbox one day.
I also remember making a paper-mache mask for my mom. It was pretty cheesy looking, just black and red striped. She gave it back to me a few years ago, along with some other random stuff she had saved from my childhood.

Yes, because she was 5 and it was an innocuous assignment. As parents, we cherish those things, but kids just roll it out and move on.

I disagree, as I have memories of the things I described above. I don't remember making them exactly but I definitely remember the items and the fact that I gave them to someone. I remember nothing else for years on end, but I remember the pendant. When I saw the mask I made for my mom, I remember that I had made it, but not the actual process.

I have a video of me dancing with my son every year on his birthday. Maybe he will get married one day, maybe he won’t. Maybe I will pass before he does. My father was not at my wedding and I felt the absence heavily. If he needs me, I will be there to dance with my son.. even if it’s just in the recording of a memory.

We owe it to our children to try as hard as we can to make it to that day. We will be there and then after we can have our moment of weakness.

This is the definition of true wealth. Keeping something so simple for 24 years just to make his daughter feel special on her biggest day is peak fatherhood

Agreed.
My daughter now in her teens, was cleaning her room. She was throwing out some stuff like a painting she made when she was young.
That priceless painting is now hanging above my dresser.

Everything my g/f's kid has made for me is currently hanging on my fridge. I'm running out of room.

In that case, it's high time to create a dedicated "Art Gallery" on a prominent wall.
We did one for our own Kids when they were young. Our Neighbour was kind enough to create a tractor paper banner that read Gallery 3503 (our street address) using his colour, dot matrix printer. Yes, this did happen in the mid-90's

I love this idea, framing them and hanging them with a little museum-like info tag.

When my dad passed last year my grandparents gave me a whole box they had of his childhood art and schoolwork. 95 years old they still had their baby's artwork from like 1958.

Man, I would've appreciated my dad just showing up to my wedding.

Thank you. It was for the best in the end but his reasoning was total bullshit.

Mine didn't go because my mom went. This post made me tear up right away.

u/gaggerofnuns 19h ago
That's exactly why mine didn't attend. I also suspect that he was being a little bitch because I didn't ask him to walk me down the aisle. He disappeared out of my brother and mine's life for over 20 years so for him to expect to walk me down the aisle is fucking delusional. Honestly, the trash took itself out.

Man that's hard to get over. I hope life is better for you now.

Life is wonderful! I've only been married 6 days and just so happy and grateful for the people who want to be part of my life and who are willing to endure me haha.

Not at all surprised to see this, any decent Dad would treasure these small things, simply because they were created out of Love and are priceless.
If it were me, the bowtie would have been left behind.

I crocheted a tie for my dad when I first learned how to do it. I found it again when I went through his things after his death.
When I was nine and my parents divorced I went to live with him, so he was the one who came with me to shop for clothes. He had good taste, and I still remember my favorite dress in the world, still, black velvet with a ruffled white lace collar, and a suede patchwork poncho that really was my favorite. Everything is gone now except for a pair of acrylic cable knit knee-his, still vibrantly red, but yes with a hole in one heel.

I can't even keep my AirPods in the case for a week, let alone a paper tie for two decades. This man is built different.

I cannot imagine how he felt during that wedding but God give me one daughter at least 🙂 so I can feel the emotions what he felt

I'm slightly conflicted. While I get the sentimentality of this, depending on the daughter, this might not be the best thing to show off at her wedding. Could be a bit embarrassing. But hey, if it worked for them, awesome. I can definitely see this not working with other people.

Cool. i'm going to frame my kid's drawing and force her to hang it on her wall when she moves out 15 years from now.
Nice gag, but within this simple context, i am not amazed.

You clearly don't understand love ,love comes in different ways and forms and this is one of them .This isn't a set instruction guide or stuff that u must follow.
