Doesn't that hurt their necks?
87
u/ThirstyHank 17h ago
They can break each other's necks

u/Photoshopdoge 12h ago
Really sucks that their main defense/attack ability can also hurt/cripple them. Nature really screwed over the Giraffe on that one.

u/MaiaNyx 9h ago
I mean, that's pretty common. Life is dangerous. There's daily battles across the planet for food, mates, territory, etc. Lions have teeth and claws meant for killing prey. They also use those teeth and claws to fight for their survival mechanisms. As such, lions die to other lions.
Animals have to choose their risks. They need food to survive. They have to decide if fighting for that food is worthwhile. That's why there's a lot of "sizing up" in animal behavior as they do overall hope to avoid a fight because it's a draw on precious energy and is potentially fatal.

u/TeilzeitOptimist 10h ago
Which physical attack doesn't hurt or cripple? The one that is deadly and..?

u/unitedmary 17h ago
Both sides lose, but animals probably don't realize it. Someone should really step in.

Their necks are built to absorb the impacts, but sometimes though rarely, they could get knocked out and the fall could kill them. Just imagine falling from a double storey building.

It’s stupid but now I’m finding myself wondering if there’s ever been a giraffe that’s afraid of heights.

u/Sea_Dust895 10h ago
Yes. And shortens their horns making makes in wild easier to spot because they have shorter horns than femal giraffes due to this fighting

Why is this video so sped up? The real speed is impressive enough.
I don’t know who all needs to read this, but:
Reality is much more interesting than you using your human brain to decide what might be more interesting than reality.

Feels like we live in a post-reality world now. Shit gets faker every day.

It’s important to teach the truth and critical thinking as the most important things.

Attention span to watch the full video is gone that’s why, assume they will watch for 5 seconds
4
u/TheLumpyCherrio 12h ago
This might explain why it looks plausible but somethibg about the movements appeared too similar to AI to me

And those heads are the size your torso. Massive animals, I’m sure there’s a lot of force there.
8
u/guttanzer 16h ago
Giraffe heads are as big as horse heads. It’s gotta be like getting hit by engine blocks.
7
u/Illustrious_Can4110 15h ago
Giraffe heads are much bigger than horse heads. I saw them at Melbourne Zoo a while back. I couldn't believe how huge they were... just not the obvious height, but their overall size.
2
u/Big_Cry6056 10h ago
Not to be rude but we’ve heard horse heads are generally smaller in Australia. I’m not saying your horses head is smaller, just sayin statistically.

Are they able to kill each other?
3
u/BassPlayingWitch 17h ago
Yup, the nubs on their heads are basically cartilage hammers that exist for this very purpose. If one of them doesnt back down first, then the only other way for it to end is when a neck breaks.

I wish there were like fight scores for each blow with a meter on the top.. street fighter: jungle edition
6
u/redsensei777 16h ago
WTF? These guys fight to the death!
4
u/FileCheap7824 14h ago
Often yes.
They often survive with broken necks walking around all bent
1
u/Canadian_Border_Czar 1h ago
Well that's depressing. Are they at least bad giraffes that sold drugs to kids or something?

Why am I imagining a gay couple (male + male) fighting?
1
u/Internal_Set_6564 15h ago
No one was accusing anyone of being like their mother…so not exactly the same (in my experience)

Sword fighting?

u/ihavenobrainx 9h ago
Yeah yeah. That pointy sword fighting and they covered their faces with masks? What is it called? We called it “Anggar” here. But you know what I mean.

You’re not far wrong, there’s often sexual behaviour mixed with the neck fighting between two males.
1
u/ihavenobrainx 9h ago
Ah ok. Thank you. I thought I was the only weirdos here? Or we are both? Or there are more? Anyway, you understood me. So it is all good.

Am I the only one that thinks this looks like a giant penis fight?
1
u/Highlandertr3 16h ago
They can and do kill each other doing this. The hits are hard enough they can rupture the organs of the opponent.

ITs possible the diplodocuses used to do something similar to...their body is somewhat similar.

I'm surprised, but that's totally normal think, when you consider the number of animals that fight with their head. If they had a long neck, they would use it too.

1
u/born2stink 14h ago
Oh and also they fuck afterwards, like the winner tops. This is incredibly common

Meanwhile I sleep slightly wrong and my neck is beyond fucked for a week. 😳
Then there’s these guys, using their necks as baseball bats.

I hate the fact that one of them had to die. 😢 Based on how stupid these animals are, I was hoping to see them both fall.

I've seen a 🦒 get their leg absolutely destroyed by one of these swings. A larger male kept targeting the same leg until it completely snapped. Then the smaller male kept running and collapsed under his own weight, breaking the other legs in the process... Limbs just flailing until he was on the floor. Other male kept hitting it. This looks goofy but wild animals can be insanely brutal to others of their species.

I wpuld do it that way too. I mean, human females pull hair, human males kick each other in the bal...testicles.

Camels arent real. A sentient neck with the head of a camel with FAS attached to the tip? Nah. Fake.

u/Hot_Plant8696 5h ago
And this is also, in large part, the reason why they have such long necks… for mating-related combat.
