They'd have to finish abolishing slavery first, but then they'd have to acknowledge that the country was only "founded" because they genocided the Natives and then shipped in slaves from other places they'd already colonized.
14
u/Ren1221 7d ago
Thank you for saying that about us Natives!! I say it all the time, and get told that “the biggest threat to Natives were other Natives”. Sure. Whatever. Thanks for whitesplaining that, and glossing over what you’ve done to generations of different races.

bribery would be they pay you on the hush to get you to do something in their favor.
Extortion would be like "do this or else", which would be "we wont expunge your record unless you agree to not do something which you would be entitled to do as your rights were violated."
151
u/Dark-Blackberry354 8d ago
Exactly, fuck settling.

Bribery implies both parties are free to make choices. This is extortion, they already have taken away this young man freedom. In a righteous world, there are two lawsuits and people would lose their jobs and potential prison.

I don't think that is bribery, it sounds more like a threat. 'If you do this then we won't do that', the family might as well go ahead and sue them. They need to expunge it anyways, they're just trying to bully the family into compliance with what the state wants.

I would call it gaslighting than a bribery. They are essentially saying “We will correct our mistakes only if you don’t blame on us.” Not to mention the compensation for the damage and lost freedom.

They can’t make these demands! lol he automatically gets his case expunged what are they smoking?

DA smokin that shit what makes you think people can’t read the law on their own.
44
u/LaserGuyDanceSystem 8d ago
They know that the legal system scares and overwhelms people, and they absolutely exploit that fact
31
u/hannamarinsgrandma 8d ago
Exactly.
The district attorney would absolutely cause several delays in the lawsuit trial, making it drag on and on while the poor kid misses out on his next stage of life and his family struggles to pay for their lawyer for an extended period of time.

u/hannamarinsgrandma 8d ago edited 8d ago
Him having a robbery on his record will impact his job and schooling options and hiring a lawyer to take on the case will be an added expense.
They’re gambling on the family being desperate and not wanting him to lose any opportunities so they’ll rush and agree to it.
15
u/ComicsEtAl 8d ago
They placed him under house arrest with an ankle monitor without a trial (at least as far as the linked article is concerned). Point is, yeah, they can make that demand. The Brights do not have to obey it however.
13
u/thismotherfklr 7d ago
But he never committed the crime he was alleged to have committed, therefore, it was an illegal house arrest. On top of that if he lives in a state where you are charged a daily fee for the device that is another unjust miscarried of justice here.
They screwed up badly and he can make them pay.
4
u/new_math 7d ago
And by them, you mean the tax payers. There will be zero recourse for the DA.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Altruistic_East765 7d ago
recourse against the DA is you campaign against them on the next election cycle and bring up how badly their miscarried justice, since that position is "supposed" to be a neutral political appointment.
This to get a new candidate that cares about justice and how the Law is actually to be conducted.
9
u/fakeguru2000 8d ago
The state didn’t make these demands at all. The DA in Baltimore even apologized to the family knowing they had already filed a lawsuit.

u/MichaelJServo ✊🏾✊🏽✊🏿✊ 7d ago
I don't think it automatically gets expunged. He won't have a conviction on his record but the arrest will be publicly available.
5
u/thismotherfklr 7d ago
No it can be sealed. He shouldn’t have it on his record at all given the grave misconduct in this whole case against him.
192
u/Deviknyte 8d ago
There should be automatic payments (in large amounts) for when stuff like this happens. Combined with jail time for defrauding this safetynet.
57
u/keldondonovan 8d ago
And it should come from the relevant police retirement amount unless it was caught and fixed by the police themselves. That was you encourage all of them to start acting right, or pay the price. And you also encourage their silent bystander buddies who "definitely aren't racist because they didn't do it, they just watched it happen and didn't intervene with the abuse of power" to fix their shit for them.
Piece of shits will still be piece of shits, but when it's their buddies eating the payout then they'll learn real quick, or get their ass kicked by fellow officers who are tired of their pension drying up. Sounds like a win-win.
27
u/EconomySeason2416 8d ago
Also, malpractice insurance. If they are required to carry malpractice insurance, in the same capacity as doctors, ones who do horrible shit will become too expensive to keep on staff... unless of course they just expand their budget to cover the increases
14
u/keldondonovan 8d ago
Beautiful addition.
This is why I love this sub. Somebody posted in another sub about the Jane Doe Cornell chick getting swatted, and someone said some shit about that the person who called should be charged with attempted murder. Then I got downvoted to hell for pointing out that calling that attempted murder is basically admitting that the cops are executioners first
Like don't get me wrong, swatting someone is fucked up, you should face charges and such, but you can't say it's attempted murder unless you believe the cops are going to show up to kill (and they are).
Here, I point out shitty cops and am understood.
7
u/EconomySeason2416 8d ago
Yup, also a not so fun fact, the body can footage from the shooting of HeeHaw the donkey was just released, and it's as horrible as everyone expected
2
u/keldondonovan 8d ago
That baby donkey was clearly violent! (Dumbasses)
The one I saw, the audio didn't turn on until after the shot. I don't know if I got a bum video, or if that's standard practice for body cams, or if it's been tampered with, or what. I've never seen body cam footage like that before though, dead silence until "Just discharged a firearm at a donkey." (Paraphrased)
3
u/SkunkMonkey 8d ago
If a barber is required to carry liability insurance, there is no conceivable reason the police can't. It would solve the problems with bad cops as once you are shown to be a bad cop, you'll never be insurable again.

u/Less_Ant_6633 8d ago
The big brain move is to sue for enough money that your record no longer matters. Checkmate, pigs.
4
u/MichaelJServo ✊🏾✊🏽✊🏿✊ 7d ago
It's pretty cheap to get a lawyer to get your record expunged. Sue first, expunge later.
44
u/fakeguru2000 8d ago
This is disingenuous. They arrested him because his school administrators saw video footage of the incident and erroneously said it was him. After his family contacted Fox45 Baltimore the DA then dropped all charges and expunged his record. The state never made a quid pro quo.
The saddest part was that he was in class that morning, yet his school administrators didn’t verify his attendance before pointing the finger at him. His family has already filed a lawsuit.
10
u/Kofink 8d ago
Shouldn’t one have verified the accusation was true?
2
u/fakeguru2000 8d ago
The police officers went to the school with the video footage from the McDonalds. The school admin then positively identified the student in question.
8
u/Kofink 8d ago
I know what your saying but a school admin positively identifying an individual isn’t verification.
4
2
u/Useful_Kale_5263 8d ago
I think you mean check their work because that’s the first thing I would do is contact the teacher and check attendance when getting questioned, especially because eye witness accounts are historically/currently inaccurate as this case shows
9
u/Careful-Hat4059 7d ago
Nah. Read the article. He was identified as being at school by 2 school officials. He was on an ankle monitor for 7 months. You are making it sound like 2 or 3 days, not half a year. It doesn't take half a year to check attendance. Police then made up the scenario of unnamed officials saying it was him. But don't forget he didn't even match the description that they were looking for.

Record should be automatically expunged as this person did not commit the crime they were convicted of. I'd like to know how this person was able to be proven guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt", when they were never even in the same area. And as for the lawsuit? That's a given, and it's called accountability. Once again, like the record being expunged; it should be automatic. But we know that most rules only apply to a small amount of people. Edit: And as for this "offer" itself; it's bribery and an affront to justice. You could possibly call it extortion via compliance because the person in this story has limited options and means when compared to the racial majority, and they know that, and they prey on that.

I don't get it. If he refuses this order, they are going to uphold his conviction for a crime after his alibi has been established?
