First picture is today, second was after the repot earlier in the year.

I posted this tree earlier in the spring following a repot. This is it in all its Autumn glory. There is a lot of work required next year to correct a few issues, but I’m confident in a few years this tree should be in reasonable shape.

Gosh I love this Juniper (I believe by Nicola Crivelli) - this was photographed this weekend at the Sakka Ten show in belgium. Video of the event (and later also one of the venue - Danny Use's garden) soon on YouTube. Did anyone else visit?

Show and Tell My little Dwarf Alberta Spruce

People have been showing their DASs recently. Here's mine. I've had good luck and good times with these. I get one every year from the after Xmas sale and have fun with it. Then I give it away usually, in hopes of encouraging interest in Bonsai. This is the one I'm keeping. I'm considering doing jinn on the green apex as well, so it becomes a three-tiered jinn. Maybe, maybe not, time will tell. Or maybe I'll smoke it. I hear smoking trees is a thing, who'd have thunkit? Cheers!/jd

Several well-integrated graft points and a cool, fused trunk.

I know grafted ficus are not everyone's cup of tea, but I like playing with these because of how fast they seem to put out new growth for me.

The pot had no drainage holes, and the soil it was in was little more than dust, so I potted it into my partially organic mix once I had freed it from the glued pebble prison. Had to go in my biggest plastic pot because the others I had on hand were too small.

Discussion Question Bonsai Club Suggestions

My bonsai club is in need of some revitalizing. The guy who normally leads is moving further away, and we are looking for some fun ideas for sessions. What do y'all do at your meetings/what ideas do you have for fun engaging meetings? I recently did a session on fusing Ficus together. We meet for about an hour once a month, sometimes meetings are a bit longer/shorter. Here are some other ideas:

  • $50.00 Bonsai Challenge (Maybe this will be $100 to counteract inflation a bit)
  • Doing a show, learning how to do prep work, and displays.
  • "Flowering Bonsai"
  • Wiring vs. clip and grow, including practice wiring. (During my session it seemed like some would like additional help with wiring)

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I just got this bonsai for my birthday.
What can I do to take care of it and style it into something special? Can I use wiring immediately? Can I trim branches? Change soil? What can I do to make it grow into something I can be proud of. Willing to do the ground work so any tips/ advice would be greatly appreciated.
P.S I’m not particularly green fingered but I’m a good learner.

Show and Tell This is by far my best deciduous trunk. With its sail-like shape (wide in one direction and narrow in another) and movement, I’ve never seen its equal.

Collected around February, this American Beech has made it through its first season and will ride out the winter in my greenhouse. I can’t wait to see what it does next year, and if it dies on me it will forever be “the one that got away.”

I’ve never seen a deciduous tree in bonsai culture with a trunk like this. I’ve seen it with junipers where they use deadwood to make the tree grow like a fan, but I can’t fathom a technique to deliberately get a deciduous tree to grow like this.

Please advice how I can improve the looks, make it grow faster or to not kill it hahaha.

I am excited to see how this will progress.
