Anime / Discussion Can i Read Boruto Without Reading Naruto?

I know you thing you misread that, but I mean it.

I really wanna get into Boruto! but i dont wanna watch Naruto which is just filled with way too much chapters and bad pacing and is very bloated, also i heard the storytelling gets very weak later in the story.. I dont want any Part in that!

Im not saying that i beleive boruto is better than naruto by any means.. Im sure naruto is better,

ive been a one piece fan for like a long time, and my freind has been Consistently BEGGING me to read boruto.. Even he Says that i can read it without having any knowledge of what happens in naruto.

I know its Ironic... "you dont want to read all of naruto because its long, but you Read one piece!?" Yea i know its kind of dumb, but i read one piece back in Covid Quarantine in 2020, so i had a lot more time in my hands then, but not now.

Boruto seems like a really interesting story with a cool main character, ive been seeing the tiktok edits and it looks so damn cool.

i dont want to suffer and read like 700 chapters of naruto before i can get into boruto.

So i geuss my question is,

Can i Read Boruto Without Reading Naruto?

And if not, can i just watch a quick recap of naruto or do i have to actually suffer and put myself through 700 chapters?

Lol sure but you're skipping straight to the bloated, bad pacing part of Naruto

You can. But boruto has so much bullshit exposition that leads to nothing.

Well, the anime does. OP mentions reading manga

One Piece is very different from most shonen manga. Its chapters are heavier in text. A Naruto chapter should take less than half as much time to read as a One Piece chapter, if that encourages you. I suppose you could read Boruto without it, you'll only miss a few key themes, but I wonder.

It would really like to see the outcome of somebody reading Boruto without knowing anything about Naruto and then them explaining what they think happens in Naruto. However I couldn't in good faith encourage that

You can, but honestly, I wouldn't suggest it. Naruto is a far better story, and if you read the manga rather than watch the anime, you'll skip the filler bits that are the worst parts of Naruto. If you watch the anime, you can watch the filler if you want, or use one of the many guides out there to skip it and get the actual story.

Also, as weak a story as Boruto is, I personally think the best payoffs in the Boruto story come from things that are best appreciated if you have watched or read Naruto first.

All of that said, I say that simply because you asked for opinions. You can do whatever you want. It will most definitely spoil things from the story in Naruto in the event you ever go back to it, but there's no rule saying you can't just read Boruto, and there's enough there it'll make sense as its own story.

Naruto manga is super good, well paced and easy to follow. It's a downgrade to read boruto ngl

I would not recommend that. At least watch a recap on Youtube or something.

i think u can. i think its a separate story that keeps into mind new readers who entry point is in boruto. if anything itll get u to get into naruto.

boruto doesnt really get into cool ninjutsu techniques. theres almost no genjutsu. so like youde be going in able to understand the plot but there wouldnt be a lot of world building, which was set up really well in naruto

recaps of naruto are fine. if ur like the powerscaling type, it might be hard tho

You probably can, but you wouldn't get as much enjoyment out of it as you would if you had already read Naruto. That's just something you'll have to accept going into it. But at the same time, if the choice is between reading Boruto first or not reading either Naruto or Boruto, then obviously it's better to read Boruto first.

Boruto is literally the sequel. You wouldn't understand Boruto if you haven't read/watched Naruto

yea but no one wants to read 700chapters of naruto just to read brotuo

1

u/TakasuXAisaka 2d ago

Then don't read Boruto. Like I said. It's a sequel to Naruto. You wouldn't understand everything if you haven't read Naruto

u/buschlight1984 1d ago

I suggest you do it. It would be a disservice to yourself to skip Naruto because Boruto has hype right now. Naruto is fantastic and you'll enjoy Boruto much more having watched/read Naruto

You can. You just won't know the characters from the previous generation. But it’d be best if you watched at least a good, detailed recap of Naruto and Naruto shippuden beforehand. Boruto is primarily a sequel, and the events that take place in it follow certain elements from Shippuden.

I disagree. If you're going to skip naruto you might as well skip it completely. Because then at the very least you can enjoy Naruto after Boruto. It's not like Boruto really spoils much of Naruto

SPOIL FOR OP

All the major antagonists in Boruto NNG are Otsutsuki (aside from the secondary members of Kara). Momoshiki, Kinshiki, Isshiki... If you don't know about Kaguya and, therefore, the Otsutsuki clan from Shippuden and what they are, you won't understand anything. Momoshiki and Kinshiki originally come to Earth because of Kaguya, and Isshiki was stranded here because of Kaguya's betrayal. It's not mandatory to know all this, but if you don't want to be lost and wonder where these random aliens came from out of nowhere, you should at least watch a good, in-depth recap to learn who Kaguya is and what her story is. That's just my opinion.

It would probably be rough. Being a sequel, Boruto basically assumes you know and love Naruto. They don’t try to explain any of the nitty gritty of the power system because it’s well established in the past.

Older characters also don’t get explained much because Naruto contained their whole arc. You could look at most adults in Boruto and think “Oh! This is a cool dude. I wonder what his deal is”…. And you’ll never learn because they peaked in their teens and Naruto covered it.

They also drizzle in nostalgia that will fly over your head without context. Even things as basic as character’s abilities are tied to the past. Moments when Character X reveals they can use ability Y are supposed to be big payoffs for fans who remember that ability from before.

It isn’t a problem of you understanding the plot (the plot is pretty simple and self explanatory). The problem is that Boruto is trying to tell a story in a familiar place that readers already love. A recap video won’t give you that.

This is an anime tagged post, so assume you want to watch the anime rather than read the manga. The anime is pretty high is anime original content, which can be blessing and curse in your scenario.

You could use a filler list but it is awkward starting an anime where the recommendation is “Skip first 20 episodes, watch 4 skip another 30, watch 10”. Nobody makes an anime intended to be watched that way so there will be inconsistencies.

You might still enjoy it. If you are chill with watching Boruto and friends no ninja stuff, it can be a relaxing watch. Near the end some of the anime original content gets really bad so it might be worth getting a guide so you can at least skip an arc if it is getting really bad.

For the love of god do not do that to yourself

Why not?

You just described Naruto as something you’d have to suffer through.. it’s far far superior to Boruto in every way and holds up extremely well.

If you want to suffer, I’m mean really suffer, that’s Boruto not Naruto one of the all time Goats. The only way Boruto can get more painful is if you haven’t read Naruto, and you’re reading Boruto stand-alone. My god I can’t imagine the pain.

Read Naruto. If you really don’t like it after the first few chapters back out. Id day if after the chunin exams your not interested, neither Naruto or Boruto is for you.

Please never imply Naruto is something to suffer through that is just insane

1

u/PoopyButtDestroyer99 1d ago

no no noo, i did say in the post that Naruto is probably better, What i meant by suffering is that naruto is just way too long, i bet the sotry is good, but its waayyy too long, and i dont really wanna invest that much time ya know?

1

u/Cisqoe 1d ago

Bro just dropped “ya know” - Naruto’s tag line man! Give it a try. It’s not like One Piece which is a slog, slow burn. Naruto manga is fire. If you want to shorten it, finish it at part 1 and that’s it you have a nice story. If you want more, go into shippuden.

In any case, don’t do Boruto. Lower quality, worse story and backflips on everything that makes Naruto so popular.

1

u/PoopyButtDestroyer99 1d ago

ok, ill give the manga a shot, but dont ppl say that the story gets really bad toward the ending?

1

u/buschlight1984 1d ago

Everything people dislike about the ending of Naruto ties in directly with Boruto's main plot. So worrying about Naruto's 'bad ending' and going straight into Boruto is kind of backwards

1

u/RabbitridingDumpling 1d ago

Yes, absolutely.

For me Boruto is a completely different story with a completely different focus. Sure we have ninjas but even the city, Narutos home town, where Boruto grows up is confronted with completely different challenges.

Naruto has a lot of fillers and the most interesting stuff is in the shippuden. I am also a huge fan of one piece and was absolutely not into Naruto until Pain and Itashi caught my eye. They made me wonder what Naruto is about and my favourite episodes became "the two man team" 329 and "the unison sign" (478 such an amazing art of an anime!! Even better than the manga at this point)

So I was the one who was watching the fights first and found it intriguing what Naruto or Itashi were talking about. So I wanted to know more and more and endet up watching and reading the whole story of Naruto which endet too fast in the end :D

So if you are unsure if you want to start boruto, I would recommend to start with boruto two blue vortex, if you like it, you might want to know more, so you will eventually start form Borutos beginning. And if you still have questions, you can go back to Naruto. And then it is fun to read from the very start until the waiting line every month :D

So good, Goda doesn't let us wait for so long!!

Yes, but I do recommend reading Naruto first, its probably gonna make the overall experience more interesting.

If it's something you enjoy you shouldn't be "suffering" Sounds like you don't like it which is fine, watch what you enjoy instead of forcing yourself to like things others are talking about

A lot of the criticism towards naruto imo is a result of a lack reading comprehension you should just read it yourself to form your own opinions. A lot of the foundational context of why things are the way they are wont really make much sense without reading naruto. You can do it, but i wouldn't suggest ot
