Bremerton Speak Up & Unite at City Council Meetings!

Join us at the next Bremerton City Council meeting on Wednesday, October 21, at 5:30 PM at the Norm Dicks Government Center! Let's bring signs, fill the center, blast this on media, and make our voices heard on all the issues that the city doesn't seem to have interest in resolving. All these issues relate with each other and the well being of the future of Bremerton!

Our community deserves to be heard about the issues affecting the future of Bremerton and we will not stop showing up to meetings with public comments until our voices feel genuinely heard and considered. The council doesn't want us to come together but the more we do the more they seem to sweat. It will continue to require work but we can and will fight this!

Not only are these concerns important to the future, the main concern and push that relates to everything right now is that our Mayor, Greg Wheeler needs to be more involved with the community input and our concerns! We need to continue to spam email and push him so we can hear more from him as well as push for need to have monthly town hall meetings.

~Public Comment Disclaimer~

Speaking up is hard for many of us, but it's proving the more people speaking up the more impactful it is! Please encourage everyone you know to comment at future city council meetings.

The council recently reduced public comments from 3 minutes to 90 seconds, primarily to limit input around shelter-related issues. They may think this will stop us from speaking, but we can prepare our main points to fit within 90 seconds. Please spread the word that speakers now have only 90 seconds!

In person seems to be more impactive but if you can't, you can sign up for a public comment via Zoom:

https://www.bremertonwa.gov/FormCenter/City-Council-17/City-Council-Virtual-Limited-Public-or-C-142

-URGENT CONCERN: BHA SHELTER FUNDING IS EXPIRING-

The most urgent concern is the council's refusal to move forward with the shelter approved in 2024. If the funding isn't used by the end of the year, BHA will lose over $1.3 million! THATS ONLY 79 DAYS. We are running out of time to save this funding and get the shelter built before winter.

The council blames “zoning and excessive permits,” but they have the power to change this. They appear willing to lose the funding because the shelter conflicts with their “Harrison Heights” plans, which include an Opportunity Zone 2.0 supporting their vision of turning Bremerton into a place for investment and profit.

Winter is coming, and people in our community will die without shelter. The council has repeatedly been told this but seems to refuse to comment or take action. News coverage and transparency have been limited, and we are running out of time!

The more people who speak up, the better. Please push the council and mayor to act and contact local and state news reporters to demand transparent coverage ASAP.

Other concerns include the city enforcing anti-camping rules and removing people from public spaces while shelter and housing options remain limited, as well as council members and local public figures using slurs and degrading language about unhoused people at public meetings.

~ CONCERNS ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESSES, STREATERIES, AND BREMERTON'S FUTURE ~

Remedy Speakeasy and Local Boys Taproom have been ordered to remove their outdoor dining spaces by October 15. The city has discussed a permanent streatery program since 2022, but one has not yet been adopted. They have not been given a reason for this but it seems likely due to wanting more profit from parking tickets which Remedy and Local Boys have offered to pay them for what they would get from parking ticket fines.

During the 10/7 council meeting, the council pretended to have concerns around this but according to Article III Legislation in Section 15 Subsection 5 around Vetos, the City Council has the power to override the mayors veto with a 5:2 vote! Almost all 7 council members said they wanted to do what they can for streateries but they can fix this! If this is your main concern please call this out!

~ WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE? ~

-Attend city council meetings! Make public comments and bring signs visible to in-person and Zoom audiences. Numbers matter!

-Organize and speak up! Connect with others, organize events, and keep showing up until our voices are heard.

-Push for news coverage! Contact local and state reporters to raise awareness about the shelter and its -$1.3 million in funding at risk in just 79 days! We need more transparency and public attention ASAP.

-Help organize in-person petitions to support these issues. Any help is appreciated!

-Encourage others to run for city council and mayor! Help bring more community voices and perspectives into local leadership.

Keep emailing the mayor and city council!

Mayor: Greg.Wheeler@ci.bremerton.wa.us

Council: City.Council@bremertonwa.gov

City Council Meetings every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 PM

Meetings for the remaining of the year:

10/21, 11/4, 11/18, 12/2, 12/23.

Better Living

TL;DR needing a new place to live, closer to the ferry the better. Max is $1950 after rent and utilities. 1 Bed, 1 Bath, in unit Washer and Dryer

My lease is coming up in February, and my place is jacking up rent another ~$250/month. Not like they really do anything to provide a warranted increase besides own the damn place but whatever I guess.

I work near the ferry, so prefer to be closer to the ferry, whether its downtown, manette, just the other side of the warren ave bridge. I'll even consider closer to Silverdale if price is reasonable. Budget is $1950 after everything; Rent, Gas, Water, Sewer, Garbage, etc. I think utilities average roughly $150 at most from my experience, so I'd say base rent is $1800 or so.

Looking for a 1 Bed, 1 Bath, In Unit washer and dryer. Thats my main necessities, anything else is just extra (I.e. AC, Gym, Community Area)

I'm really tired of rent getting increased when property managers do the bare minimum for your unit and the entire building... 😮‍💨

Anyone know which school/district bus B-34 belongs to?

About 30min ago had a bus run the red light right into traffic at the intersection of Riddell and Wheaton, nearly caused an accident. Been trying to figure out who this bus belongs to because I’ve called CKSD, SKSD, and BSD and none of them have a bus with that number. I wasn’t able to catch the writing on the bus, just the bus number.

Edit: Found it, it was North Mason SD.

Comedian you've (probably) never heard of to perform "Mostly Jokes" Saturday in Bremerton

Bremerton!

I posted about my show "Mostly Jokes" here a month or so ago, I hope you don't mind one final follow up? The theater is about 3/4 sold already and I'd love to fill the place up for my last show before my taping... OK, cue the cut and paste of my previous post, sorry for the repeat!

-

My name is Aaron Foster and I'll be performing a show I call "Mostly Jokes" at the Bremerton Community Theatre on Saturday, Oct 17 as I prepare to tape it as my first special in November.

I know seeing a comedian you've never heard of is a pretty big ask. Totally fair.

That being said, wasn't there a time when you had never heard of whoever your favorite comedian is right now? I'm not saying I'm gonna be that, but if you like the jokes in the clip, you'll probably like the show.

Heads up: "Mostly Jokes" covers some dark topics like mental health, (VERY) dysfunctional families and mid-life regrets, but I promise it's named that for a reason, it is mostly jokes.

Tickets are $20, the show runs about 90 minutes and I promise: no crowd work.

More info through my site www.MostlyJokes.com as well as a bunch of reviews from people who have seen it, press, interviews, etc.

Moving to Bremerton S27

Hey guys!

I will most likely be taking a job at the shipyard starting June 2027. I am writing because I am trying to scout out what life would look like. First and foremost, how does west coast time feel? I currently live on central time and watch all New York City sports teams. Second, what social communities for young professionals are there? Finally, any advice on navigating this new area of the country would be greatly appreciated!

Seeking a disability-aware family-law attorney for complicated finances

I’m looking for firsthand recommendations for a family-law attorney who handles Kitsap County cases involving complex finances: business interests, real estate, undisclosed debt, and potentially forensic accounting. There are no children involved.

I’m disabled, and autistic. I need someone who can take those realities seriously while respecting my intelligence and my ability to make my own decisions. Clear explanations, written follow-up, and patience with processing time would help enormously.

There are concerns about financial control and coercion within the marriage. I want to understand the financial consequences of legal separation versus divorce before deciding what to file.

Have you worked with an attorney who was both financially thorough and respectful toward a vulnerable or overwhelmed client? What made them a good fit?

I’d appreciate firsthand recommendations. I can discuss sensitive specifics privately with a prospective attorney. *(GPT helped me draft this, so I wouldn’t ramble)*

Kitsap Peninsula Climate Survey (10 mins)

https://form.jotform.com/262706593931060

The purpose of this anonymous survey is to collect information on the places and plants that are important to people living in the Kitsap Peninsula, and to gauge thoughts and understandings of climate change.

Survey data will be used as part of a project that identifies which natural places and plants are most at risk to climate change in our region. The places and plants of importance will be compared against the results of a climate vulnerability assessment, which will in turn provide targeted conservation practices.

This survey is hosted by Great Peninsula Conservancy, with analysis by Haven Ecology and Research LLC. This survey is funded by a grant through the Climate Smart Communities Initiative.

Public power is cheaper than PSE right now, but one public utility just approved bills going up 80%+. Is Kitsap's takeover worth it?

Kitsap PUD is exploring a takeover of PSE's local grid. A PSE-commissioned study reportedly puts the cost in the billions, so that number is worth treating with some skepticism. I looked at what public power actually looks like. Seattle City Light averages about $0.14 per kWh versus roughly $0.17 to $0.18 for PSE, so it's cheaper today. But City Light's own plan has two 9.5% increases (2027 and 2028) and projects typical bills rising more than 80% by 2032. Going public changes who controls the margin, not the cost pressures. Meanwhile PSE's pending request asks for electric increases of 15.15% in 2027, 3.74% in 2028, and 8.7% in 2029. Virtual hearing is October 7, written comments open under UE-260005 and UG-260006 at utc.wa.gov. What would you want to know before voting on a takeover? Full write-up is in the first comment (I'm the author).

Comment 1: Write-up with sources, including the public vs. private comparison: https://ewyattmendel.substack.com/p/your-pse-bill-will-keep-rising-a

I'll be publishing more on local government and utilities. Follow along here: https://ewyattmendel.substack.com/

Moving to Bremerton

Hello everyone!
My girlfriend and I are moving back to Bremerton in the later half of this month from the Portland/Vancouver area, and are looking for a place to rent. She just got hired on as a paralegal 1 at the shipyard, and I'm an Air Force veteran turned CTE teacher (currently a para but am looking for teaching jobs in the kitsap county areas. Just accepted a paraeducator job at an elementary school in town). Our combined budget is $2250/month, with a dishwasher/washer/dryer and AC.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and we are STOKED to come back to the area!(I'm a Bremerton native, I moved down there for grad school).

Warning to rocky point and marine drive residents

There has been coyote sightings all along rocky point and down on marine drive, we saw one tonight walking down the street and heard them yipping and barking down on marine drive. Please be careful if you have animals or young children especially at night. It was a full adult coyote.

Please be safe and scare them away (at a safe distance, do not approach wild animals but loud noises or yelling with startle them away) anytime they are close or you see them so they continue to stay away from humans. Thank you guys!

Looking for things to do in Kitsap.

Hello everyone,

I'm a guy coming off a breakup, and now find myself in possession of a lot more time, and a lot fewer time to fill that time that isn't just sitting at home feeling sorry for myself. I live in Port Orchard, work in Bremerton. I have Wednesdays and Sundays off, work into the early evenings on the other days.

I'm looking to fill my time when I'm not at work. Events, volunteering, social gatherings, whatever. It's time I got out of my comfort zone. Hit me with whatever you have or need.

Thanks!
