Blur - Think tank (2003):

Marion. CBGBs. 1996

Marion was a band that encapsulated all that aspects my Anglophilic mind craved: songs, lyrics, guitars, and above all, looks. This was my first interview I ever did for Wake Up! Videozine. I met up with the band and their legendary manager, Joe Moss, at the CBGBs gallery and my epic journey began. The experience was transformational. I was now a video journalist, born of sheer self-invention. I was D.A. Pennebaker in search of my Bob Dylan. [I was living in Dylan's first NYC apt at the time] I would go on to interview 35 of the best UK bands that year and create the most authentic and original time capsule imaginable.

The lesson: when you ain't got nothing, you've got nothing to lose. #RadicalFreedom

It was Madchester and Psychedelic music, not Britpop ! ✌🏽But it’s a good album.
But it was disowned by the band. Paul Weller and Oasis came to help them, you know the story.
Anybody a fan from the start ?

Still love this album.
I think it’s the best second album, the follow up to their debut.
Was it from this album, Suede was known as The London Suede hence hinder their success in America ?

Campag Velocet, Sauntry Sly Chic, live on the Jo Whiley Show

I was just flicking through YouTube there, and came across this from 1998 (I think?) I remember watching this at the time (The Jo Whiley show) and genuinely thought the next phase of British guitar-indie music was going to be a blurring of the Madchester and Britpop vibes, with more electronica vibes. I was also including The Lo-Fidelity Allstars, as at the time, they had a singer with very much an Ian Brown-template look (also a performance on Jo Whiley), and Asian Dub Foundation.

Alas, we had Travis then - and the soon to be supernova Coldplay - but I felt at the time, that the previously mentioned style was going to yield some 'big boys' and the Britpop party would continue in a much altered form. As well as Travis etc., The Strokes then came out and set the tone for the next decade...

However, I do still look upon this brief period with fondness and as a bit of "What might have been".

Seen them in Edinburgh last Friday. I think they’re a band I’ve seen more than any other in the thirty odd years I’ve been going to gigs

Great band with some top new tunes to go with the old anthems
