Question/Discussion Are there any current TV ads that you actually like?
There’s plenty of justifiable hatred towards many ads on at the moment, but there must be some good and/or funny ones that you like?

The Boots one where the couple are looking at a formidable mountain and then are spared climbing it because their child brought the wrong "boots bag" makes me smile. The way the woman says "such a shame" as they are sat by a lake eating their lunch amuses me.

Yes! I relate very much to the mum.

u/Able_While_974 2d ago
The look of joy and relief on mum's face when she realises they'll have to picnic instead is the best bit of acting ever.

Beautiful Buachaille Etive Mòr, I would love to climb that one. But I agree, the look of relief on her face is so well done.

“I quite like the cat one – ‘I got the cream, double cream.’ 😂 That makes me smile. Think it’s for a comparison site.”

The one with the cows coming home is hilarious.

I always like to think this guy is a classically trained actor, but this turns out to be his 5 minutes of fame. I wonder how often he gets recognised and asked to do the diarrhoea thing?
10
u/paranoid_adamdroid 2d ago
I like to think the same. He's mostly a frustrated stage actor. Doing a bit of Shakespeare and some obscure Russian plays. Then one day he gets a call from his agent. "Guess what? Ive got you a nationwide advert. No idea what it is but I told them you'd be interested" He's so happy. He tells his wife and children. "Yayy well done daddy. I can't wait to see you on the telly" Then a few months pass. And the advert is on the tv. He puts his head in his hands. The family surround him and offer him words of comfort and support.

u/barkyr2112 2d ago
Do you think you would recognise him on the street without the fluorescent attire and broom nd pulling the diarrhoea face?
5
u/Monkeytennis01 2d ago
I don’t know if I would. I really want to know if any Redditors know him or have met him and can get an answer
6
u/Able_While_974 2d ago
One sub recently posted a live interview with him. I can't find it at the moment but if I do, I'll come back and post the link.
Edit: Found it! https://www.reddit.com/r/GreatBritishMemes/s/5QMvdiUXMM

The Pepto Bismol one is still a personal favourite.
I always think that those guys tell their friends and family they got the big break, and will be on TV tonight in the ad break for Corrie, then BAM…..IF YOU HAVE NAUSEA, HEARTBURN…INDIGESTIONNNNN…

u/JonS90_ 2d ago
Someone singing the word "DIARRHOEA-A-AH!" is objectively funny and I won't have anyone try and convince me otherwise.

The Lancashire Hotpots played it live - you can see the audience reaction! 😂
7
u/Swimming_Possible_68 2d ago
Lancashire Hotpots are always good for a laugh! I now have eggs sausage chips and beans in my head....
Actually the pepto bismol song is probably a good follow up to that!

The KFC Believe In Chicken campaign has had some compellingly odd ads. I hope it carries on for a while yet.
1
u/anabundanceofotters 2d ago
They’ve just started a game show called ‘Don’t crack’ on YouTube for the chance to win £50k

u/Nondeadly 2d ago
My favourite advert is that one for "Smarty Mobile" with the empty check in zigzag at the airport.
The guy is good looking. I don't watch much TV but when I do it's mainly Funeral/cremation adverts or suchlike which are miserable AF.
5
u/john_g22 2d ago
I have a feeling I might be in the minority here but the one where the guy has an epiphany in the middle of Aldi because everything in the shop has Aldi prices does make me chuckle

u/Toffee_Wheels 2d ago
Not a specific advert, but I've noticed an actor that appears in loads of adverts, so now I get excited when I see him.
Once you've spotted advert man, you'll see him everywhere.

u/Beginning_Poet_3309 2d ago
Pic?

u/Toffee_Wheels 2d ago
The dude in this advert: https://youtu.be/VWqLQunZq8U?is=5FJpvS9D88E64FjX
You will now see him everywhere. Virgin Media, Flash and plenty more

u/Goldencol 2d ago
I knew exactly who this was going to be before I clicked . That bloke is everywhere. The ed Sheeran of advertising.

u/anabundanceofotters 2d ago
I do hope it’s the same fella I’m thinking of, as I enjoy seeing him pop up on loads of things.
Ginger fella?

The one for Sun Life Insurance where the mum says “I’ve started learning ju-jitsu” before throwing her son when he reaches out. That makes me really laugh. It’s what I aspire to do to my son - if I were to learn ju-jitsu and if I were capable of throwing him anywhere 🤣
The way in which the mum says “I’ve started learning ju-jitsu” is just so funny.

No. Ads are the pain in the ass I have to suffer through to watch the fucking thing I actually want to watch.
I actively go out of my way to avoid buying the things I see on ads. Case in point, those fucking awful KFC “believe in chicken” ones.

Yes the Virgin Media one with the elephant taking over and driving the truck. Always find it funny !

I have to mute it since virgin spams the ad so much i dont want them to make me sick of the song like theyve done with so.many other good tunes

Amazon Alexa with Brett Goldstein - I’m surprised they get away with it pre watershed! I love Roy Kent!

Don't hate me, but that weird ad for the new betting site is so weird and so arrogant that I love it.
Bad news for them I can't even remember their name, but I remember the ad.
When I used to consult for Leagas Delaney, breaking category convention was a huge thing, then Covid hit and I think everyone's afraid of genuine creative.

The Backmarket one where the company boss says he will give us his mum if they don't live up to their promises.

u/ilbindilo 2d ago
The Tapi Carpets advert did make me chuckle. https://youtu.be/rhmsiBZG2y0?is=E2b3WqkV1erXe4gl

Great Western Railway with the Famous Five. They're local to Western England so I only see them when I visit relatives there.

The Confused animal ads.

The ‘til the cows come home one has a genuine sense of anger about it. I’m surprised they got that through. There’s almost a mean spiritedness about it.
1
u/CaptainMcClutch 1d ago
Honestly an ad break is an excuse for me to go to the bathroom or pick up my phone. I won't do either during watching something, but when the adverts start... I'll instantly zone out.

Who watches ads rather than fast forwarding or looking at your phone with the TV muted?

I really like the sharps advert with the twins/sisters. It gives me Christmas advert feels but it's not Chrismassy

There's a brad Pitt one for coffee and it features dogs aswell, it's not annoying.

I like the middle aged couple on All Clear Travel Insurance. They don't do or say much, just look happy together.

Sofology "Ice Cream" by Greg Bell. Always gets me how she yanks the ice cream back from the kid. Although I feel sorry for the dog at the end, and it hasn't made me any more likely to buy their sofas. https://vimeo.com/1170243587

The one from the Financial Conduct Authority about trading scams. I love that giant seal

I actually miss having access to UK TV advertising, I wish someone would start up a YouTube channel - but it'd probably end up struck off for unpaid copyright material or something.
Generally there was always a steep ratio of hateful advertisements with the occasional Gem coming through though.
So anyone posting, I'd appreciate if anyone can find links or sources where I can catch a view of any good ones from outside the UK as I left in 2001.

I can't remember what the advert is for but a lot of of the snapshots it shows are quite funny – a best man giving a terrible speech, a really crap football manager etc

Brad Pit and his sofa full of dogs. I also like the train one with Eleonor the dancing puppet.
2
u/Scary-Scallion-449 2d ago
Eleonor is made by Talking Hand Puppets. See the website for a lot of characters you'll recognise.
1
u/PadMog75 2d ago
So THAT'S her name! Can't stand those adverts. She looks like a middle-aged divorcee who has girly nights with her friends watching Dirty Dancing, all drinking Prosecco of course. Followed by an angry conversation proclaiming all men to be bastards.

I normally mute adverts but I like the new one for Hawkstone beer. It stars Kaleb and Jeremy Clarkson and is very much in keeping with Clarkson’s Farm vibes.
