❔ Question and Discussion What are Brunei's hidden gems?

Now that Ramadhan is over it seems like a good time to promote local businesses so:

What Brunei businesses do you think are amazing but most people don't know about them? Could be anything - café, restaurant, retail, you name it.

To keep things objective maybe not businesses owned by you or family or friends 😉

A hidden gem is Brunei's LAST ACTIVE keris maker in Jerudong.

I saw that you can also take a class and make your own parang there right?

The guy specialize in kitchen knife and keris. Parang he would decline as he stated "there is a lot of parang maker out there and I prefer to be unique..."

Ooooh the parang one must be a different one then. I must be mistaken.

Pantai Penabai @ Jalan Kuala Tutong, very underrated.

100% agree, my favourite beach in Brunei. Tutong locals seem to know what's up as they're always there BBQing on the weekend.

Supasave packed foods. Good enough for any meal of the day.

Difficult to find real hidden gems as most ‘hidden gems’ are promoted by influencers

Interesting. I actually think the reliance on social media promotion for Bruneian businesses is partially a result of the way the country is designed (car-based, with very little walking).

It's hard to wander round most of the shopping districts as there's not a lot of connecting pavement, so you don't organically discover places you might eat or shop by randomly walking past them.

I have been trying to figure this out since that former tourism minister put this as their promotional motto some 20 years ago!

Embun Bed & Breakfast along Kota Batu. Their IG embun.bnb

A tranquil getaway. Choose one of the Riverview rooms. Amazing scenery.

I'll start:

Monochrome on the corner of Jn Simpang and Jn Dato Taib 1 does one of my favourite cappuccinos I've had anywhere in the country, but because of the location I think it mostly just serves the apartment block it's in the bottom of. If you're in that neck of the woods it's a top top place for a coffee.

a friend of mine highly recommend this as well but i totally forgot about it. Time to drop by. Thanks for this.

I don't know if this is a hidden gem (as I only discovered about them recently) but Cozy Crates in Kiarong is amazing, each time I go there, it feels like treasure hunt of cheap small items.

Brunei diving sites. The most underated leisure activity here.

1

u/generalwastification Apr 06 '26

Great answer - have you got any links to companies who offer diving around the coast here?

0

u/stoicmind360 Apr 06 '26

Yeah sure. Look up Poni Divers or Oceanic Quest. These 2 are the licensed ones.

It used to be Jerudong Park. 1990s was Brunei’s Golden age under the rule of HIS majesty.
