This 2025 list highlights budget-friendly gravel bikes with solid geometry, quality components, and upgrade potential. While the term "gravel bike" evolves, it often resembles 90s hybrid or ATB bikes. Due to gravel biking's popularity, entry-level models remain pricey, and sub-$400 road bikes labeled as gravel bikes are excluded—especially as the Ozark Trail G1 Explorer leads in the sub-$400 range. The list includes flatbar and dropbar options. Use this list as a starting point to find the best fit for your needs, with updates planned over time.

The order is based on lowest to highest price only. The rank has no meaning as to best value or best bike. We are a budget oriented subreddit, so ranking by lowest price to highest made sense to me.
Update Notes 2/9/25
It is clear that the bike industry is gouging consumers on the gravel trend. Prices remain high in this category and in some cases are going up. Poseidon is hands down offering the most value right now over all when it comes to manufacturers. There are some bikes listed as gravel bikes from Alliexpress and other budget brands. However, under closer inspection, there is a lot of sus parts and marketing shenanigans going on. The bikes on this list can actually be used for the purpose.

This updated January 2025 list highlights mountain bikes currently available in the retail market, featuring solid geometry, quality components, and/or upgrade potential. These bikes are suitable for bike path, Cross Country (XC) and/or beginner-level Green and Blue flow trails/single track. There is a mix of 29er, 27.5 hardtails and few full suspension options. While some may require minor or major upgrades to be trail-ready, the list offers options across various price points in line with our Sub's guidelines. New members are encouraged to start their research here. While other bikes could be included, this list aims to remain concise and manageable. It reflects proven options recommended by this and similar subreddits and will be updated periodically. I do plan on doing gravel and city/commuter/casual lists as well.

bought a budget Kent Bike and that is what it is. sent 2 of the same pedal, so won’t thread and too cheap to send another pedal because obviously this is a scam people run and not willing to question their methods. bike seat and handles bars are also very poorly made. Bought new pedals because Kent won’t fix their issue. Do not recommend

My first full suspension that I ever bought! I almost bought the ot fs.2 slalom but got this for $400 instead. Decided to start building it up (almost sold this thing) and so far this is the progress and honesty pretty proud of it. Posting here cause I just wanna get some opinions on how it looks cause i’m pretty proud of this little thing. Questioning if I should just bite the bullet and get a cheap set of 4 pot brakes or spend a decent amount on proper brakes. If you got any budget brake recommendations they are VERY welcome! Besides that any tips or advice? lmk!

Hi people
I’m new to Oxford and I’m interested in mountain biking. Beginner and adventurous so if there’s anyone in Oxford, I’d like to go biking some time. Also looking to learn trails and tricks and tips of mountain biking…
Thanks for reading.

Haven’t weighed it yet but it’s definitely shed a couple pounds. Last upgrade I need to do is a seat post and then it will be upgraded as parts break or wear.

I've asked in r/gravelcycling, but figured I'd get some takes here as well.
I’m retuning to biking after over a decade away. I could use advice from more experienced folks. My primary usage is commuting (with panniers), but I love the outdoors and would love the option of hitting some mild trails while camping, etc.
I got a medium Ozark Trail Rebel G.2 ($648) a couple of weeks ago, set it up with a rack, Shimano hybrid pedals, lights, and planned to install compressionless housings and fenders last weekend...which is when I found an open-box large REI Co-op ADV 2.1 ($675!) that has nearly identical components (and already equipped with Jagwire brake housings).
I either return the Ozark or sell the ADV.
On paper (and by reputation?), the REI sounds like it could be the better product long-term but the Ozark feels better when ridden. Yes, the "medium" OT is more my size on paper, but I don't think the frame size on the ADV is causing the difference in feel. I'd much rather support REI than the Great Value bike, but idk if that trumps bike-feel.
Here is how they stack up side-by-side:
| Component / Feature | Ozark Trail Rebel G.2 | REI Co-op ADV 2.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Price Paid (MSRP) | $648 (same) | $675 ($1,499) |
| Frame Material | 6061 aluminum | same |
| Fork | full carbon | same |
| Crankset | 42T | 40T ProWheel |
| Drivetrain | 1x10 MicroShift Sword (Non-clutched, 11-48T) | 1x10 MicroShift Sword (Clutched RD-G7005M, 11-48T) with SRAM UDH |
| Brakes | Tektro MD-C550 (Standard housing) total mush | Tektro MD-C550 Dual-Piston (Jagwire compressionless housings) much better responsiveness over the OT bike |
| Mounting Points ** | ** 3-bolt: both fork legs; 2-bolt: top tube, seat tube, down tube (2x) | 3-bolt: both fork legs, down tube (top); 2-bolt: top tube (2x), seat tube, down tube (under) |
| Max Load | 220 lbs (100 kg) | 300 lb (136 kg) |
| Wheels / Rims | generic? alloy, 700c (apparently tubeless-ready) | WTB ST i21 TCS 2.0 700c tubeless-ready |
| Tires | 40mm Kenda Piedmonts | 45mm Kenda Piedmonts |
| Assembly / Tuning | personal box build | tuned at REI Bike Shop |

I see a lot of people saying the G2 doesn't have a clutch. However mine 100% does, I can feel it engaging every time I'm on the trail and it feels just the Box derailleur on my MTB. if you look up the Sword groupset it says the 10x has a clutch and the 9x does not and the G2 has a 10x.
Do some of these have a gimmped lower end 10x setup which is not listed on Microshifts website? Are some people just wrong about the specs? What exactly is going on that so many people say it doesn't have a clutch.

I have had my bike almost 2 weeks. I went to Walmart and purchased the Ozark Trail G1. I’ve put about 60 miles on it so far and have really enjoyed the bike. When I submitted my new bike day photos a couple of people identified that the assembler did a poor job. The brake lines were incorrectly, my shifters and brakes felt loose. And let me tell you how the lord works! I was going to take the bike to the shop today, and when I loaded it up I had 2 flats from my last ride on Monday. Thank god I was taking it in anyway.
The shop is called Epic Cycles in Denver. Spoke to Patrick over the phone two days ago and he seemed cool so I decided to take the bike there. He wasn’t there when I came in today, but Niles was. Niles answered all my questions as he tinkered away at my bike. I learned so much! I come from the running world and my body can’t take it much anymore so bike riding is an alternative with the hopes of training for some sort of Ironman.
Nikes fixed my brake lines, my brakes, adjusted my gear shifters, replaced both tires and greased my chain. If the weather wasn’t so crappy today when I got home I’d probably be on my bike.
Bike riding has really become freeing for me. I enjoy being outside, feeling the breeze, and taking in the views. I just throw my music in and ride out.
I’ll definitely hit Epic Cycles again. Great customer service at a reasonable price.

Hi all! I’ve been lurking for a bit and wanted to say something.
First I love this sub and seeing everyone’s bikes! From new to old etc. One of the common bikes I’ve seen on here lately is Walmarts Ozark gravel bike. Fellow gravel rider here! Whoo hoo!
My advice isn’t for that specific bike but where you’re buying the bike.
Please take your bike to a bike shop and have them give it a safety check. 100% of the Walmart bikes that have come into my shop are not assembled properly or done very poorly. There is no bike shop at Walmart, obviously and they are put together by a 3rd party.
By taking the extra time to have your local bike shop make sure things that should be tight are, etc the less likelihood of a failure that causes you to crash etc.
If a local bike shop isn’t in your area, I strongly recommend Park Tools YouTube videos. They are very user friendly.
Happy riding!

Hey! My rear tire is pretty shot on my g1 and looking to possibly upgrade to something that will feel a bit faster, I spend almost all my time on roads plus little bits of slow gravel and passing on packed grass/dirt. But mostly pavement. Thinking of sizing down to a 35-38. Bonus points for tan walls!

What’s the consensus in this group of the new generation Siskiut T7? I did research and feel they are a good starter bike while also being a good platform to upgrade down the road or simply pass on to a new rider.
I bought two yesterday. I should have them in a few days.

Its only like the 9th evolution of this bike. I get bored then change what its for. This is by far the most comfortable variation. Ritchie coyote bars, handmade framebag made from a carhart. And of course the pizza rack.

Poseidon X flat bar that I found on FB marketplace a few weeks ago. It's been a solid commuter after adding on a Ortlieb quickrack and pannier for the laptop and gear. The included flat bar was a bit TOO flat, so added on some old 50mm riser bars. Also put on some old rockbros ergo grips, fooker pedals and my MTB headlight for the dark mornings. Pretty impressed with the overall ride and the "cheap" AdventX 1x10 drivetrain.

Both the drive and non-drive side of this boost axle bike are clean and unthreaded. Is there a nut or something that is supposed to go on the other side? it is an unknown Chinese carbon frame.
Also, any known good quality headsets at a good price?
On Amazon they basically go from $15 for an unknown brand to $70 for a name brand.
Any suggestions? IS42/IS52 for a tapered fork

Hi! I'm new to biking (29 F) and looking for good suggestions on bikes to start riding? I want to get a hybrid bike because some trails I want to do will have a small dirt path but I am 5"1 & have over pronated knees and ankles. I also have kind of a bad back and am concerned about the handlebars making me lean forward too much and curving my spine. I really want to find a bike that will be comfortable for long periods on time with how my body is shaped. Any suggestion on what bike to get? Budget is ~$300 max

Over the weekend me and some buddies took our bikes up to snowshoe for closing weekend. That includes this Ozark Trail FS2.
Its obviously had dome upgrades but its done amazing so far. I am super impressed with it. We did every drop and jump we could hit and it didn't skip a beat.
The only real issue was its short travel for a park but even then it was doing well. Funny enough it never dropped a chain even with the factory groupset where as our GX eagle and XT equiped bikes did. Then again the chain slap on the ozark was still loud.
Over all if you have a gen 2 or 3 FS2 id build it and have a blast.
