EDIT: to correct my absolute unit of a brain fart on the location of a store I have patronized for YEARS!
You know the saying "the best thing since sliced bread"? If you go to the WF on Broad Ninth Street, you would never have the chance to know unless you Slice Your Own Bread!
A recent new addition to the bakery section is a serve yourself bread slicer. I was intrigued and eager to give it a try. Growing up and walking to the local bakery, I was always both terrified of and fascinated by the bread slicer. Such danger! Such perfect slices!
Fast forward to recently: I went to WF to get a some slice sourdough and was shocked to see a slicing station since they no longer pre-slice break for you. Finally, my time to shine! I put the bread in, followed the instructions and ended up with the wonkiest sliced bread known to man.
Fast forward a week. I'm determined to do better. I go to the slicer to find remnants of the bread of the last few people to attempt this task. (Kind of gross, but they are my brethren, so...challenge accepted.) Another fail...now my bread is crooked, uneven, and I have also left some men behind....ends and bits and bobs. It's like a bag of croutons in there.
This week, it appears as though a fierce battle has been fought with the slicing machine. There are whole loaves broken and destroyed in there. Obviously a valiant battle was fought...and lost. I aborted my mission.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that the self-serve bread slicer has bested. Godspeed to all who try!
