Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 My brother and I invented a better way to carry propane tanks, and we manufacture them right here in Manitoba. AMA! 🇨🇦

Three years ago, on a cold winter night in Winnipeg just before Christmas, I was hauling a propane tank down our apartment building’s hallway. Fortunately, I was still inside where it was warm. Unfortunately, I was still hauling a propane tank.

You know the drill. The tank banging against your knee like a doctor checking your reflexes, the thin metal collar digging into your hand like it’s personal, and you’re a penguin-wobbling down the hallway questioning your protein intake because the thing supposedly isn’t even that heavy.

I finally put the tank down, looked back at my brother and said, “Why are we still carrying propane tanks like this? These things need a proper handle!”

I started rambling about how we could make something that hooked through both sides of the collar, letting you carry the tank from the middle, almost like a bucket. Then came the name. “We could call it the NoPane Handle”

And that’s how this whole thing started.

The idea was pretty simple. Make a removable handle that attaches to the collar of a standard propane tank, giving you a comfortable, centred grip instead of those awful metal cutouts. The goal was to distribute the weight more evenly, keep the tank away from your legs and help reduce some of the strain on your hands, wrists, shoulders and back.

Turns out, turning a simple idea into an actual product isn’t so simple. We went through prototype after prototype, spending months trying to get the dimensions just right so the handle could easily slide in and out of standard propane tank collars. It had to be strong, comfortable, durable and weather resistant.

Then came everything else we had absolutely no clue about. Injection moulding, finding a manufacturer, tooling, patents, packaging, Amazon, retail, shipping, you name it. We figured we’d learn along the way, and we did. Usually through trial and error.

There were definitely moments where we wondered whether we’d spent years and tens of thousands of dollars trying to solve a problem nobody else cared about.

We got roasted when we first introduced our idea online. A lot. But then we started hearing from people who actually tried it. Complete strangers telling us how much easier it made carrying their tanks, others wishing they’d found it sooner, and a few even calling it life-changing. I can’t really describe what it felt like hearing those things about something we’d come up with in a hallway. It made all those years of work feel worth it.

Just as things were starting to take off, life threw us a serious curveball. My brother was diagnosed with kidney cancer and needed surgery. Everything happened so fast. Even while recovering, he kept asking me about NoPane. Were we taking care of our customers? How were sales going? He would even start telling me about new ideas he had for the handle. Probably not what we should have been worrying about but I think that says something about how much this little invention had come to mean to us.

Thankfully, the surgery went well. Looking back, that whole experience really put things into perspective and made us appreciate this journey, and one another, even more.

Our goal from the beginning was pretty simple. If we could take even a little bit of pain out of this world, we’d consider it a success.

Fast forward to today. We’ve now sold over 20,000 NoPane Handles, started getting into retail stores and reached customers across Canada and the US. We’ve been called geniuses, idiots and just about everything in between.

We’re still a small business run by two brothers from Winnipeg, and one of the things we’re most proud of is that something we dreamed up in our apartment is now being used all across the nation.

We had an idea and just enough stubbornness to keep trying. And somehow, here we are.

AMA. 🇨🇦

Questions ❓🤔 Canadian Tools

So I’ve always been a Dewalt Girl, and my impact driver just died. I’m looking at getting a new one but I know dewalt has new ownership and the quality isn’t the same as they use to be. I got a Milwaukee drill set on sale yesterday and the charger and batteries are very cheaply made, one battery doesn’t even work, so I’m gonna return it. What would be the best quality brand to now switch over to? All my Dewalt tools are over a decade old, and I have loved them but not interested in paying the prices if the quality is no longer there.

My wife has raynaud's and I finally got a decent job this year. What are the warmest, coziest, good quality (and mendable) socks I can get her? Preferably wool though I am open to other natural fibers.

Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 Crate 61 Soaps

Post image
86 Upvotes

I found these Crate 61 Organics brand soaps in the men’s grooming section at Winners last week. I bought them right away when smelled them and saw that they are handmade in Pickering Ontario with all natural ingredients.
I have been using the cedar and pine scented one now for about a week and am loving it. It lathers really well, smells great and leaves my skin feeling clean and fresh. My wife says that it smells “manly” and she likes it quite a bit. The soaps are plant based, not tested on animals and packaged in recyclable, sustainable packaging… which basically ticks all of the boxes for me.
I don’t know what else Crate 61 sells or what the company is all about but I hope they do well and continue to pump out these awesome handmade bars.
I also still really like the Guelph soaps that I found at Canadian tire for cheap this summer. They are cheaper than these Crate 61 bars but also smaller, so the value is not too far off when comparing the two.
Anyway, just thought I’d share with you guys and I hope that you all keep supporting our local manufacturers and that everyone has a great weekend!

Looking For: Clothing, Accessories & Personal Care 👕💄👜🍁 Is jewelnest good for buying engagement rings?

Post image

Hi all
I’m looking at the Sonja Aura from Jewel Nests (pic attached) and I'm about 80% sold, but I've been burned buying stuff online before so I'd love some outside opinions before I hit the button.

Stuff that makes me think it's fine:

-the stones come with IGI or GIA certs, so at least I can look up the diamond itself
-they say everything is handmade by jewellers in Canada, and they've apparently been around since 2019
-free resizing and free engraving

Stuff that makes me hesitate:

-I'm in Montreal so I can't go see it in person, and I couldn't find a showroom address, just "Toronto". maybe they work by appointment only, which would make sense for a small studio

Has anyone ordered from them? How was the quality?

Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 ISO a specific soup!

I was in Newfoundland about a year and a half ago. We had purchased a pre made vegan potato corn chowder from a local superstore. I swear this is one of the best soups I’ve ever had. I’m in Alberta and have searched and searched for the same soup. It’s a glass jar with a gold medal lid. I desperately want to re create this soup but I need a photo of the ingredients list. Any help would be greatly appreciated. From a gal who’s been thinking about this soup for nearly 2 years

Canadian-Owned Businesses 🏢🍁 Cozey Cielo Review

I bought my Cozey Cielo sofa sometime in 2021 or 2022. From the beginning customer service was amazing. The fabric on the sofa was forming lint balls and they replaced all the covers. The seat cushions were losing feathers like crazy so they replaced the seat cushions. I think they even replaced the back cushions because of lumpiness. This was over a period of the first 2 years of ownership. The fabric is still good, however the cloud like seat cushions have turned into hard lumps, no matter how many times I try to fluff them up. The back cushions are ridiculously lumpy and misshapen. They will not go back to looking like proper sofa back cushions ever. I didn’t contact Cozey again because I was told by customer service after the first cushion replacement that it wouldn’t happen again. I expected my sofa to last longer than it has. I noticed the cushions were not quite right probably in early 2024, but I had a lot going on in my life and couldn’t be bothered to write a review at that time. Over the last several weeks I’ve been realizing just how uncomfortable this sofa is and getting ready to sell it or throw it out. All that to say, if you want a sofa that will give you 2-3 years of comfort, go for it. But if you want something that will last you at least 5 years, look elsewhere than Cozey.

Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 Kids Clothing Brand "Peanut & Bumble"

Is anyone familiar with kids clothing brand Peanut and Bumble? Their ad popped up in my social media feed and they have cute stuff and claim to be made in Canada, however I've seen a few posts lately about scammy brands and maple washing, and they don't list an address if location on their website.

Looking For: Clothing, Accessories & Personal Care 👕💄👜🍁 Insulated/Winter Men's joggers?

I love my cuffed joggers, but fear they will be a bit chill in the winter.

Any suggestions for insulated men's joggers? I used to get these insulated cargo pants from Costco that were nice, but looking for something a bit more casual than those. Something in between sweat pants and jeans.

Something Canadian owned, or in some way supports Canadian Business.

Thanks!

Canadian-Owned Businesses 🏢🍁 Are there no affordable Canadian alternatives to IKEA?

I’m looking for counter height kitchen stools. A comfortable and reliable ikea stool I’ve had in past apartments is $50. The closest priced Canadian alternative I can find is a poorly reviewed Structube stool, and from what I understand Structube quality is very hit or miss compared to IKEA’s consistency.

After that, the next cheapest Canadian counter height kitchen stool I’ve found is $260.

What Canadian company can I support with a kitchen stool budget that doesn’t go up to $300/stool?

The bigger question: What is a mid-budget Canadian furniture retailer with consistent products?

I live in downtown Toronto, I do not own a car, and do not have the budget for things like EQ3, Woodwerks, etc…

I understand that my budget likely means not Made in Canada, but I would like to support a Canadian company at least.

Edit: I am well aware that famously Swedish company IKEA is from Sweden, and that Sweden is not in the U.S. and so IKEA is therefore not American. I don’t give a shit. This sub is called “BuyCanadian” not “AvoidAmerican,” I just want to support Canadian businesses when I can, I’m not trying to boycott Swedish companies.

I seen a tik tok video that was a creator trying different types of wild game meat sticks from Hunter's Reserve. I thought this would be an excellent gift for the Hunter's in my life. Unfortunately, they dont ship to Canada. Is there a Canadian company that has wild game meat sticks that ships?

Purchased from craigmont.ca. It took a little while to arrive in Vancouver because I think they did ground shipping, but I wasn’t in a rush.

Been using it a few times now and it’s unscented and works great! Recommend!

Looking For: Clothing, Accessories & Personal Care 👕💄👜🍁 BN3TH undies quality decline

Without counting, I would estimate that I have purchased about 20ish pairs of different styles of BN3Th undies over the years. I ordered a bunch back around 2021 and 2022 because I was impressed with the quality and the fit and that they didn’t give me any issues like riding up or wedgies. The recent pairs I’ve purchased however seems to be a much thinner material that bunches up like crazy and also loses its color due to fading. I have pairs from 2021 that have outlasted pairs I’ve purchased no more than a year ago.

Has anyone else noticed the same quality decline as me? What are some better alternatives? I just ordered a pair from Manmade to see if they’re a viable replacement. What do you all use?

Questions ❓🤔 Buying toys for my 1 yr old niece in Canada from abroad- Any recommendations?

Hi! I'm looking to buy some toys for my niece's first birthday and have them delivered directly to her in Canada.

I've checked Amazon Canada, but the prices and shipping charges seem quite high.

Does anyone have recommendations for websites that are affordable and accept international payments?

Thanks!
