It's a reference to this iconic rant from 2007

It's crazy to me that not only are there CFB fans who are not familiar with The Rant, but there will soon be CFB PLAYERS who weren't alive when it happened.

89

u/nomptonite Oklahoma Sooners Dec 28 '23

I turned 40 back in August and that was the pseudo theme of my party… On a banner, and on the cake… And I’m an OU alumn. That’s how epic that rant was 15 years ago. Seemed like the only choice. So yes it’s CRAZY to me there are a lot of cfb fans so young they don’t even know about it.

Last year when he turned 40, I texted my manager Happy Birthday and a clip of Gundy's rant. I think he enjoyed it lol.

13

u/nomptonite Oklahoma Sooners Dec 28 '23

It’s a timeless crowd favorite indeed haha

13

u/Povol Dec 28 '23

Ranks right up there with “ PLAYOFFS”

11

u/nomptonite Oklahoma Sooners Dec 28 '23

Yup, and ‘Practice?!? You talkin ‘bout practice?!?’

Even I know about that one too! Classic

My top 3 coaches rants of all time:

  • “Playoffs?!?”
  • “I’m a man. I’m 40!”
  • “They are who we thought they were!”

Honestly including the Pirate in that list just isn’t fair. My dude ranted about fucking Halloween candy and still made it one of the all-time great CFB speeches.

Shame that nobody even knows who Denny Green was anymore. That was one of the most epic rants ever. WE LET EM OFF THE HOOK!

Wild how young r/cfb users have become. Outside of it being a controversial situation, it seems that so many people here are too young to remember the 2011 BCS selection or '93 FSU advancing to the NC with one loss over an undefeated WVU.

4

u/Redeem123 Team Chaos • Texas Longhorns Dec 28 '23

While it’s true that people don’t know about those, those situations are exactly what the CFP was allegedly meant to prevent. So they’re not really good precedents to cite.

3

u/Fells Alabama Crimson Tide Dec 28 '23

I mean, we ended up in the same situation, no one disputes the '11 title and FSU is complaining about the same thing they benefited from before so I think it's all pretty relevant.

1

u/Redeem123 Team Chaos • Texas Longhorns Dec 28 '23

FSU is complaining about the same thing they benefited from before

Which happened a decade before anyone on the current team was even born.

But yes, we're in the same situation, which is exactly why people are upset. We'd been told that the 4-team playoff would fix things... we'll see if 12 works a little better.

This might the GOAT rant. He was fired up.

It's hilarious that anyone thinks otherwise and acts like he's on a hot seat every chance they get

In this age of "fire now, ask questions later" a lot of programs need to learn to ask themselves what they hope to gain by firing their current coaches

Sometimes it makes sense to fire your coach. But too many mid-tier P5 programs these days fire coaches who reliably produce winning records, fan support, and occasionally put together very special seasons

25

u/MC_chrome Texas Tech • Miami (OH) Dec 28 '23

Joey McGuire has had winning seasons in his first two at Tech and his first two as a HC, yet idiots were calling for him to be fired because we lost a series of close games.

Joey also recruited one of the best classes in school history, so I really don’t understand this position beyond certain fans wanting to yell at the clouds

14

u/PedanticBoutBaseball Boise State • New Paltz Dec 28 '23

sometimes i think people forget there are levels to this, and just because Texas is a recruiting hotbed doesn't mean its easy to still get talent to go to Lubbock.

Also i think the halcyon days of Mike Leach, michael crabtree, etc. have people thinking that should be the standard at TTU and not a "nice to have every decade or so" kind of success.

2

u/74kygone Kentucky Wildcats • Team Chaos Dec 28 '23

I think it’s only going to get worse for coaches of Big12 teams. Since there is no big team in the Big12 next year, every fanbase is going to expect to compete for the title and when those expectations are met with a 6-6 season; fans are gonna crow and coaches are gonna get fired.

3

u/cardmanimgur Ohio State Buckeyes Dec 28 '23

fan support

That one is the problem. Every fan base believes that a coach producing 9 wins isn't getting the job done, and the answer is to fire him and get a coach who produces 11 wins. It's the Nebraska corollary.

I think moving forward we'll see more coaches get longer leashes, because with a 12-team playoff you will see some of them get in and it will be a big resume boost, especially if they can get to the quarterfinals.

1

u/TheUltimate721 Nebraska Cornhuskers Dec 28 '23

Firing Frank Solich was the worst move we've ever made in program history. Solich was Tom Osborne's hand-picked successor, and even though he wasn't perfect (He was a first time head coach at the college level) he was a good enough coach to win the Big 12 and NY6 Bowls on occasion.

Steve Pederson chose to fire him and get rid of everything that Osborne and Devaney had built over the last 40 years. What's even worse is that he did that without a clear successor in mind. Apparently he wanted Mike Sherman from the Packers, but didn't bother to ask if he was even interested before firing Solich and sure enough he wasn't.

Firing Bo Pelini gets a bit more complicated. He had adequate on the field success but his demeanor off the field made living with him more difficult than it needed to be. The year he got fired there were was a time where after we lost a big OOC game to UCLA, Bo ripped on the administration and the fanbase in his press conference. I can't remember the specific incident but I remember one time he refused a halftime interview and insulted the reporter trying for one. I legitimately believe that if he wasn't such an asshole we would've been ranked higher in the AP and coaches polls consistently. He also just didn't make adjustments a lot which leads to embarrassing performances like Wiscy having three different 100 yard rushers against us when he is supposed to be a defensive minded coach.

Yea, there's a portion of your fanbase even this year who were like....wanting him to fail over the whole 3 QB usage thing. Hell I remember when there was rumors that the entire team was going to quit after the ISU game this year and that would finally get rid of him.

Remarkable that he turned you guys into a 10 win team. I bet it pisses a lot of you guys off.

1

u/Skank_hunt42 Oklahoma • Red River Shootout Dec 28 '23

I don't understand your losses tho, aside from ISU other than just not being prepared? looking ahead? The losses to USA and UCF are just mindblowing

7

u/Majormlgnoob Oklahoma State Cowboys Dec 28 '23

OSU Football is an enigma, impossible to understand

1

u/olozsram Oklahoma State • Central Okl… Dec 29 '23

USA was an across the board failure. Bad play, horrendous coaching, complete lack of motivation. The way we played in the first two games of the season made that loss not too surprising to me. It was an extension of the horrible fall-off we had in the 2022 season that culminated in a mass portal exodus.

UCF was pretty simple. We put all of our eggs into the Bedlam basket. We had an amazing streak going into it, and we won to cap it off. We were burned out, hungover, and didn't have anything left to play with. We peaked and fell off badly in Orlando, and it followd us to the Big 12 title game. The monsoon didn't help, but that wasn't the main issue.

4

u/Darth_Ra Oklahoma Sooners • Big 12 Dec 28 '23

At least they're doing it for your coach. OU fans go after the players, and we are definitely losing recruits and transfers over that shit.

2

You mean review bombing a business because their son transfers out of OU is a bad look?

4

u/Macewindu89 Oklahoma Sooners Dec 28 '23

Gundy is one of the best coaches in the country - I always laugh when people call for his job. He will probably dominate the new Big 12.

-1

u/-Umbra- Oklahoma Sooners Dec 28 '23

Well, Gundy is one of the best coaches in the country for around 10 games every season. I think Nick Saban would've been able to keep it competitive against South Alabama and UCF, instead of the 33-7 and 45-3 scorelines.

7

u/Macewindu89 Oklahoma Sooners Dec 28 '23

Come on man - after the exodus from last season, ten games is a hell of a coaching job. It’s not easy to win at OK State.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

I do. I have. I probably will again I admit

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23 edited Dec 28 '23

Let’s not pretend the t boone pickens money dump hasn’t had a whole lot to do with okie state’s modern success.

It’s easier to recruit when stuff like your small shitty weight room isn’t sandwiched in a hotbox surrounded by an underground track.

Or the hundreds of other upgrades the Pickens money has brought to the program like the Sherman Smith Training Center, locker rooms, the meeting rooms and new training table(that’s where the athletes eat)

I seriously had my first I’m an old man moment the last time I was at the stadium and went to the locker rooms/facilities. the luxury they have now compared to what we had in the 00’s is ridiculous.

1

u/olozsram Oklahoma State • Central Okl… Dec 28 '23

You're totally right, but that kind of facilities mean nothing if the on-field product isn't what it is. It's all complementary. Pickens' gift could have easily been squandered with bad football, but Gundy's coaching has justified that gift. Everything happened at the right time, with the right people, in the right situations. It's beautiful really.
