After what he's done in 20 years here, this is his job until he doesn't want it anymore.

It's hilarious that anyone thinks otherwise and acts like he's on a hot seat every chance they get

In this age of "fire now, ask questions later" a lot of programs need to learn to ask themselves what they hope to gain by firing their current coaches

Sometimes it makes sense to fire your coach. But too many mid-tier P5 programs these days fire coaches who reliably produce winning records, fan support, and occasionally put together very special seasons

Joey McGuire has had winning seasons in his first two at Tech and his first two as a HC, yet idiots were calling for him to be fired because we lost a series of close games.

Joey also recruited one of the best classes in school history, so I really don’t understand this position beyond certain fans wanting to yell at the clouds

sometimes i think people forget there are levels to this, and just because Texas is a recruiting hotbed doesn't mean its easy to still get talent to go to Lubbock.

Also i think the halcyon days of Mike Leach, michael crabtree, etc. have people thinking that should be the standard at TTU and not a "nice to have every decade or so" kind of success.

I think it’s only going to get worse for coaches of Big12 teams. Since there is no big team in the Big12 next year, every fanbase is going to expect to compete for the title and when those expectations are met with a 6-6 season; fans are gonna crow and coaches are gonna get fired.

fan support

That one is the problem. Every fan base believes that a coach producing 9 wins isn't getting the job done, and the answer is to fire him and get a coach who produces 11 wins. It's the Nebraska corollary.

I think moving forward we'll see more coaches get longer leashes, because with a 12-team playoff you will see some of them get in and it will be a big resume boost, especially if they can get to the quarterfinals.

Firing Frank Solich was the worst move we've ever made in program history. Solich was Tom Osborne's hand-picked successor, and even though he wasn't perfect (He was a first time head coach at the college level) he was a good enough coach to win the Big 12 and NY6 Bowls on occasion.

Steve Pederson chose to fire him and get rid of everything that Osborne and Devaney had built over the last 40 years. What's even worse is that he did that without a clear successor in mind. Apparently he wanted Mike Sherman from the Packers, but didn't bother to ask if he was even interested before firing Solich and sure enough he wasn't.

Firing Bo Pelini gets a bit more complicated. He had adequate on the field success but his demeanor off the field made living with him more difficult than it needed to be. The year he got fired there were was a time where after we lost a big OOC game to UCLA, Bo ripped on the administration and the fanbase in his press conference. I can't remember the specific incident but I remember one time he refused a halftime interview and insulted the reporter trying for one. I legitimately believe that if he wasn't such an asshole we would've been ranked higher in the AP and coaches polls consistently. He also just didn't make adjustments a lot which leads to embarrassing performances like Wiscy having three different 100 yard rushers against us when he is supposed to be a defensive minded coach.

Whew, I'm glad I'm not a fan of a program like that. Sounds awful.

This is pretty much every football fan in the state of California. My god, is it embarrassing at times.

Also, big up to Kyushu (Kyudai alum here)!
