Satire Should the NCAA redo the SEC Championship incase it was a big fluke?

No disrespect to Georgia, I'm a firm believer that them winning is a huge fluke and robs Alabama of truly accomplishing what they’re capable of. I've spent the last few minutes in pure disbelief and it just doesn't make sense to me. I've spent the entire regular season watching the Crimson Tide play great football it's just not fair.

If Alabama loses again I will face that Geogria deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to Alabama and College football

It's one of my sports favorites, right up there with "when you remove all the outliers Patrick Mahomes is just 2018 Dak Prescott."

728

u/GoldandBlue Notre Dame Fighting Irish Dec 07 '25

That was the funniest fucking post I've ever read. If you regress anyone to the mean, they are average. How much do you have to hate a player to make a post like that and mean it?

111

u/Dragon6172 Oregon Ducks • Iowa Hawkeyes Dec 07 '25

If the subject of the post is regression to the mean then the OP definitely means it.

141

u/likwitsnake Kansas Jayhawks Dec 07 '25

The reason the post is clowned on isn't because of the concept of regression to the mean, it's because the OP didn't use any actual statistical analysis he just said 'if you regress him to the mean then he'll be worse than he is' like the concept is fine but he said you can tell it's an aspen tree because of the way it is.

55

u/TheFakeRabbit1 Dec 07 '25

If you remove all his best stats because they’re outliers for…some reason then he’s not that good!

26

u/RoccoSocco Dec 07 '25

Isn't that neat!

10

u/ThePrussianGrippe Indiana Hoosiers Dec 07 '25

If that was a serious post meant to be insightful, I really want to pick OP’s brain to figure out what the thought process was.

201

u/beyardo Ohio State Buckeyes Dec 07 '25

It’s such a blatant misuse of basic statistics too. “Regress to the mean” is already wildly misunderstood by most (a guy who shoots 40% from 3 going 0/5 from 3 a day after going 6/8 from 3 isn’t regressing to the mean), but you can’t just mess with statistics to “regress someone to the mean”

106

u/transarchycuddleslut Dec 07 '25

You sure as heck can! You can move the mean with different data, you can remove the outliers, you can normalize the distribution, you can barbecue it, broil it, bake it, saute it, etc.

The great thing about statistics is that you can do anything you want with them.

How else are you gonna put Thaddeus Young in the same class as Magic Johnson, Lebron James, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan?

14

u/beyardo Ohio State Buckeyes Dec 07 '25

You can manipulate numbers a lot, but saying you “regressed someone to the mean” by eliminating certain data points is like saying “I re-configured the drive shaft and now our flux capacitor works”

25

u/JALbert Washington State Cougars Dec 07 '25 edited Dec 07 '25

I don't want to fully defend that post (because one shouldn't) but reddit rushes to dunk on it so much while ignoring the fact that the OP was pretty correct in his predictions regarding the certain stats that Mahomes had that were unsustainably high outliers. For example, Mahomes' year with 8.6 TD% was unsustainable. Dumb post OP hypothesized 5% for Mahomes "still above average," Mahomes actually had 5.4% that season. His career average is 5.8%, the third highest for a modern quarterback, trailing Lamar (6.4) and A-A-Rod, marginally ahead of Russ and Peyton. The only 2 QBs with >7.0% were from the 40s.

Mahomes was a young QB who unsurprisingly kept growing his game in other facets though.

38

u/Mawx TCU Horned Frogs Dec 07 '25

OP was correct that the pace was unsustainable, but everybody knew it was. OP was incorrect in his methodology and that's why it gets dunked on. It was moronic analysis.

This isn’t wrong, but it’s also not totally accurate. There’s 50k people in the city limits. There’s about ~200k or so in the surrounding suburbs etc. It’s a significant portion of the states population.

The Canadian North is ridiculously unpopulated. If you took all of the three territories, the northern parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, plus the Labrador part of Newfoundland and Labrador, you might break 1.5 million people over an area of 2,700,000 square miles (270,000 square miles less than the 6th largest country in the world in Australia), and half of those people would be in Northern Ontario

My favorite is still this one by a Michigan fan -- he deleted it after he got dunked on but I made sure to save it.

I'm guessing you didn't actually go to OSU right? CFB isn't just an entertainment organization like the NFL where everything is meant to be a level playing field and each team's fans are treated equally. College football is a projection of the strength of the university, and that strength has been hard earned by its students and alumni for over a hundred years plus decades in many cases. It's not fair. Life isn't fair. That's why CFB matters more than the NFL. I AM a Michigan Wolverine. I'm part of a legacy that goes back generations. My success in life strengthens Michigan. You can't just negate all of that to create a more "fair" tv show for the average schmuck to enjoy.

Unironically, I do think it's worth quite a bit and that it does (to some degree) offset that loss.

Like... the closest thing to undefeated without being undefeated is to have one loss, and then to beat the ever-living piss out of that team in a conference title rematch. When we sort teams by how many losses they have (which is frequently how teams are tiered at this juncture), UGA feels like they belong in a half-a-loss tier.

If they are 10-2 without playing in the SECcg they are in where they are ranked. If they aren't in then they were punished for playing the SECcg. Yes their loss to a bad team also contributes, but they were in before the SECcg so if they are out after they are punished for playing in it

The context was the Preds swept the Hawks. Chicago was the 1 seed, and they had won 3 Cups from 2010 to this (16-17). They were a dynasty with stars in a huge original 6 market, etc…this loss was essentially the door shutting down on them dominating/their dynasty run.

Kane and Toews were both 28, had just come off their early deals and both just were signed to massive contracts the year before that basically meant CHI had to trade/let a lot of supporting guys go.

So it was a huge shock and with all those other factors kinda felt like ‘the end’ of their window.

We don’t have any words and we know you don’t want to hear them. We understand your anger, your frustration, your sadness. Everything you’re feeling – we get it. This isn’t the ending we imagined, and certainly not the one we wanted. Thank you for being there the entire way.

People on this sub have literally been making this argument about the ND/Miami game in different words

26

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '25 edited Dec 07 '25

Now ND can really get active as they concede miami to go all out against bama.

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos Dec 07 '25

Honestly I'm kind of doing that now. Alabama has looked like shit for a month. Fuck it - drop them and put ND and Miami in

💯💯💯 if auburn’s WRs had hands; they would’ve lost

As a fellow Bama fan my only response is take off your crimson colored glasses. This isn't a fluke, we've played terrible in the last 3rd of the season and just got dominated. Lost to Oklahoma and barely beat Auburn.

If I was on the committee I'd be seriously considering vaulting Miami into the #10 spot ahead of us.

EDIT: missed the satire flair. LMAO oh thank god.

Just think how embarrassing this would be if you missed the satire and agreed with it.

Texas is a three loss team getting punished for losing to Florida. Alabama is a three loss team that should be punished for losing to Florida State.

I mean hypothetically if Alabama just scored more points they would have won all the games they didn't so they're practically undefeated if you think of it that way

Am I the only one in this sub who's actually played organized tackle football before?

Like half of the comments I've seen on this sub are so obviously written by non-athletes that it's almost humorous.

When I was in high school (3 year starter for our varsity football team) I would get a full-on sprint going and clock the shit outta whoever had the ball. My coaches called me "speedhawk" as a nickname caus I had such a nose for the football and for those three seasons I was considered the most feared safety in our conference. Senior year I led my team to the state semifinals only to get fucked over by the refs in the 4th but that's another conversation (DM me if you're interested in hearing about it)

So, yeah. I hope yall can understand why I feel like their's such a big disconnect between myself and your typical redditor. Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way lol

Obviously the SEC is the one true conference. I would suggest something like a big tournament among SEC teams to start the season. Perhaps they each play 8 or so games against each other. At the end of it, the best two teams could play a game to determine the one true great team. At the end of it all, we could have some kind of single-elimination exhibition tournament where each other (obviously lesser) conference gets to send one team to play alongside the SEC champ just to see what happens.
