It’s enjoyable as a fan to have coaches with a personality that keep the sport interesting when the games aren’t being played. I’m not complaining.

u/soraka4 Indiana Hoosiers May 22 '26
Can concur: when Cig first said “Purdue sucks, but so does Michigan and OSU” I was like “??? What lmao” .. like why would the IU fb coach ever be taking shots at Michigan and Ohio State. That immediately had my curiosity (although we all thought he was batshit crazy at first)

We all would have clowned him if he turned out like all the other Indiana coaches. But the thing that made it legendary is that he backed it up
4
u/Crapitron May 22 '26
I disagree that you would have clowned him. You'd have just never heard about him again, like you'd never heard a peep about Indiana football in the past. Unless a Purdue fan brought it up, but they're not really wanting to draw attention to football right now anyway.

The way he has gone all in for this year, its year 6 which is when Smart and Day won, and the amount hes talking, at this point he is raising the expectations. If he is the head coach we hired him to be then he should have no problem being in the title game this year in a weaker SEC
9
u/soraka4 Indiana Hoosiers May 22 '26
You rly think it’s gonna be a weaker SEC? I figured Georgia, bama, and LSU would all be improved this year.
13
u/d1sportsball Colorado State Rams • Texas Longhorns May 22 '26
6 new head coaches in the conference, Missouri, Miss State and SC are trending down or worse, Tennessee and Alabama in no mans land at QB, Vandy overachieved last year and has a true freshman at QB, A&M will probably do worse as well. I expect this to be the weakest SEC in decades

I get where you’re coming from, but why are you thinking OU will be worse? They have almost everyone coming back (QB, WR1, both RBs, four of the starting o-linemen, and 9 defensive starters from last year including multiple all sec guys). They were one of the teams I actually could see being just as good or better than last year. But A&M and ole miss I agree with you

This is why I personally wished the SEC stayed at 8 games. I love the big marquee games against the Michigans, Ohio States, and Notre Dames. I don’t want those to leave, but I’d also love to rotate playing Baylor, Tech, TCU, and SMU. That would be a neat way to get to 10 P5 games, but I highly doubt they’ll start scheduling 11.
4
u/UpTheTrenBoyz Texas Tech • Colorado May 22 '26
Honestly, I never thought about the down the road consequences of SEC going to 9 games. I figured yall need to go to 9 since everyone else played 9. I would rather all conferences go back to 8 now in order to have a better OOC schedule.
3
u/-spicychilli- Texas Longhorns May 22 '26
I’m also totally on board with the power conferences mandating 2 OOC P4 games. I think that probably allows for more data points to compare the conferences each year.

I dont think that, and theres a good portion who dont as well. Unfortunately we arent the majority and many are scared that if we did lose to tech that wed never hear the end of it. I for one am not scared and would welcome playing tech, Smu and baylor.
5
u/dfphd Texas Longhorns May 21 '26
I agree, especially because I think we should all be past the "breakup" stage.
Im sure a lot of those fans were mad at us for leaving, and for good reason. But I think we can enter the healing stage where we play each other, which I think most fans would be happy about.
At the end of the day, football is about rivalries, and whole Baylor is not an A& level rivalry, all Texas school matchups are going to always carry an extra level of spice.

Texas went 13 years without winning the FCS conference. Since the return of the conference championship game, Texas, Kstate, and Baylor are all tied at 1, Oklahoma won it 4 times in a row. Prior to his role at Tech he Served as a leader for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board that oversees program offerings, space management, and even significant funding for all public higher education institutions in Texas (experience in a broad spectrum of higher education management)
As the lead donor and primary funding source for multiple on campus facility projects (academic and athletics - new build and renovation) he has a sound understanding of capital project development and implementation (one of the most important things a BOR manages)
Personal business success and story demonstrates innovative thinking and sound financial management that has positioned multiple enterprises for sustainable success
NFL experience (something something value add, idk...)
Political and Business relations that have led to Tech engaging in partnership opportunities that wouldn't have otherwise happened including some significant ones that are exclusive to Tech
3-generation legacy who truly has the institutions best interest at heart (Tech being a younger institution, we don't have many of those)
