Agreed. Don't know that this is what they were using (they should not have been) but until they confirm that they were not, then it remains a possible explanation of the difference between the clocks. Of course NBC could have just been wrong too.

u/steampunker14 Texas Longhorns • Army Black Knights Sep 06 '26
Isn't the clock that NBC put on the replay just a camera pointed at the stadium clock?
→ More replies (1)8
u/Responsible-War-9341 Colorado Buffaloes Sep 06 '26
Yes. Exactly. But it was composited onto the angles of the play for the replays. This works perfectly accurately so long as the camera pointed at the clock and the camera(s) of the play in fact did have correctly synced frame accurate timecode as the should have. NBC indicated that they did on air at the time and have yet to come out and revise that.
→ More replies (4)7
u/Aero_Rising Iowa Hawkeyes Sep 06 '26
Unless you recalibrate the system constantly which isn't feasible a system like that is going to have a margin of error. Most fans have no idea how the system works and that it just figures out the position using some crazy math. That's not possible with one camera. It works using a network of synced cameras at precisely measured locations to use math to determine the ball location.

Okay i understand the broadcast clock isn’t official and could get out of sync. My issue is every clock was literally set to 9 seconds before that play. So somewhere from the snap to the ball making contact with a defender in the end zone the clocks got on different times. This very likely means it was related to when the clock started on the snap
Watching the broadcast clock it seemed to start immediately after the snap, which would make it accurate. The official game clock being behind would suggest that it got a slightly delayed start, which ultimately lead to there being enough time left on the clock to warrant adding a second back. It’s either that or the broadcast clock started early, which i see no evidence of
I find that problematic if we’re to be told this secret clock is the end all be all of the game.
537
u/MongoMoonwalked Sep 06 '26
The ramifications of it are insane too. Theres always like a handful of games a season that have this exact same scenario. If there’s this third click that actually is the main one, then we need to go back and check all the other games that ended with a down left at 0:00.

I can’t speak to the Michigan–Michigan State game, but this statement about Alabama is unquestionably wrong. Thus, it was never a controversy.

I tried to post this independently but the mods inexplicably removed it. See below:
I've been trying to pull every bit of information together because this is driving me nuts. This is what I have. Someone correct me if I have something wrong.
- The "official clock" is actually used by NBC. The announcer statement that the official clocked is synced with NBC is literally true (but really misleading - see below). There are not 2 clocks.
- The clock shown on the screen is linked electronically to the official clock and NBC creates a graphic of that information for merger with everything else that is broadcast including graphics and field play. So the clock and field are independent sources of information blended for broadcast.
- There is a delay between the video from the field prior to its merger with the clock information. Stated another way, the delay in rendering the clock information is less than the delay in rendering video from the field. So the 2 are not in sync when merged. So when the announcers say the NBC clock is synced with the official clock that is true but the clock is not synced with the field play we are seeing.
- So there was 9 seconds on the clock. The ball is snapped. The clock begins running but the field video is lagging the clock. Let's say the the field video lags by 0.5s. We see the snap on the broadcast when the clock is at 8.5 seconds and has been running for 0.5s (if NCAAF showed tenths this would be apparent). The clock runs down to zero because the clock is ahead of the video feed.
All of this said, I do wonder how this has never come up before, including in basketball. I am assuming there the argument would be that the delay in the video feed was extraordinarily long last night for some reason?

u/jdhall010 Georgia Bulldogs Sep 06 '26
Suppose we replay the first failed hail mary and run a separate clock off to the side. How many seconds did the play actually take from snap to touching the WMU defender's hand? Was it less than 9.0 seconds?

All of this said, I do wonder how this has never come up before
You kinda came up with the problem at the end without really realizing it. All of us have watched hundreds of games with close clock endings in our lives and nobody has ever seen anything like this before. There's no explanation that works if you can't explain why we all have watched hundreds of basketball, hockey, and football games where the in-stadium scoreboard is official until last night.

u/JaggedUmbrella Michigan State Spartans Sep 06 '26
You know what's problematic? The fact that the clocks in the stadium aren't official clocks. The only clocks the coaches and players have access to aren't the official time? I'm sorry, that's absurd. We have the technology to talk to someone face to face in real time anywhere on the globe. I have a $5 alarm clock that updates to official world time via low frequency radio waves every few minutes. This is 60 year old technology. We can do so many things with technology that was only recently unimaginable, yet we can't get an official clock in the stadium? Fuck off. I'm growing to hate this sport for a myriad of reasons, but this is stupid, and a stupid explanation, and the conference and everyone should feel stupid.

u/Florida_clam_diver Florida Gators Sep 06 '26
Exactly, that’s the other issue
So even if everything the big ten said is accurate, they’re essentially admitting the clock that players and coaches use isn’t accurate. They also utilize the stadium clock for the play clock and whether it’s a delay of game or not
So even taking the B10’s ruling as gospel it just brings up so many other problematic issues

It's simply a lie to cover up the misconduct. The Big 10 has a financial incentive for Michigan to win. MAC has financial incentive not to fuck with the "we'll pay your teams to come get beat up by our teams" arrangement. Western Michigan got at least $1.5 million for what was meant to be a tune up game. The MAC thrives off those arrangements.
They rushed out a fabricated image of the "official clock" not matching the stadium and broadcast clocks. It's all bullshit because nobody's going to do anything about it anyway.

My favorite Gene Steratore moment was in an NFL game a couple years ago. Call is blown on the field. They review it. They inexplicably uphold the blown call after viewing the replay. They pipe in Gene and ask him what happened. He responds with a full-throated defense of the call that would be the opposite of what the refs made on the field, praises the refs for getting it right in real time (which they didn't), and 'agreeing' with the replay's conclusion (again, the replay upheld the blown call, the opposite of the call he's advocating). Even the commentators in the booth had to tell him that he had everything backwards. It was all-around one of the most embarrassing conversations I've seen among a broadcast crew.

Only thing I can figure if the B1G is telling the truth is that the TV clock will show 0.00 to 0.99 seconds as 0 and the refs clock shows 0.01 to 1.00 seconds as 1.

u/mclennon27 Fresno State Bulldogs Sep 06 '26
This is my thought. Say there’s an incomplete pass, officials signal stoppage, clock stops on that signal after milliseconds delay. If every play is not timed this precisely, why is suddenly the last play under a microscope?

Where did the idea of a secret clock come from? The Big 10 statement says they used a direct shot of the game clock in the stadium synced to the replay to make the call. They also released the below video.
What did I miss about the Big 10 or refs saying they used some secret clock?
65
u/ZaneThePain Baylor Bears Sep 06 '26
The idea of the secret clock is coming from the broadcast also using a shot of the game clock in the stadium and the broadcasters saying it was also synced in the initial replay breakdown shown. So either someone’s replays got out of sync with the clock footage, or there was a “secret” clock.

If you are a voter or committee member and think that Michigan should have lost the game, since this is a sport where rankings and access to the postseason are determined by opinions, who can just rank/seed Michigan as if they lost the game.

I feel like the more likely outcome is mandatory insight into review process. ACC and this year Big 12 already have the command center footage broadcasted, it should become standard. That and clearer insight into decimal seconds for the clock

u/Groots-Cousin Georgia Southern Eagles Sep 06 '26
If it really is a “play took 8.5 seconds and there was 9 seconds on the clock” situation, then why is this the first time I can remember a game being allowed to continue because of less than a second on the clock? Why hasn’t this happened before?

u/Hougie Washington State Cougars • WashU Bears Sep 06 '26
Coug fans are absolutely roaring because the 1997 Rose Bowl (Michigan vs WSU) didn’t get a final play because “2 seconds isn’t enough time to spike a ball”.
Bet it would have been if we were allowed hundredths of a second, eh?

Begs the question as to why you don't show 10ths of a second anyway just in case this happens. It's common across other sports with timekeeping, why not show it as well?

It honestly would've been better for the Big Ten to claim some kind of super secret timekeeping clock.
Trying to say they used the same stadium clock that NBC showed its audience as hitting 0:00 before the ball was touched just deepens the hole they were already in.

You see from one angle it rolls to 0 a full yard, if not two, from the player's hands but from the other angle it is totally touching his hand while on 1. See we stitched together a video of the play and an image of the #1 to prove it.

Whomever is keeping the official time, that should be the exact time down to tenths or even hundredths of a second and it should be displayed live on the stadium clocks and TV. I can control my thermostat from anywhere in the world so I know it can easily be done - and there is no way this shouldn't have been done already.

I feel for my Western Michigan bros so much. But why is everyone so surprised by the corruption at this point? It’s always been there in small vs big school games. I hate it.
Just look at the NIU vs. Notre Dame game a few years back. The refs basically gave Notre Dame an extra timeout and called back a clear NIU first down, all while NIU was on the verge of pulling off the upset.
No real explanation ever came from it, and those refs are still officiating games.
If people actually want something done about this, complaining about it isn’t going to be enough.
