Tbf weren’t they like absolutely elite in terms of not giving up touchdowns in the red zone last year? I know it’s not the same team but I kind of understand leaning on your defense to get the stop if you think they’re really that good.
And he’s tried the “let them score so we have more time” thing before too and that didn’t work so I guess I don’t blame him.

u/ATXBeermaker Texas Longhorns • Stanford Cardinal Sep 13 '26
Yeah, we’ve been here against OSU before and they stuffed us.
25
u/pooptrain34 Sep 13 '26
For sure. But should you lean on the defense that lost a lot of starting talent from the previous year, been on the field the whole quarter, and looked gassed?
4
u/JaracRassen77 Baylor Bears • Hateful 8 Sep 13 '26
And the defense that started collapsing in the final quarter?
4
u/pooptrain34 Sep 13 '26
Right? I think a baseball equivalency is letting a pitcher that looks gassed finish an inning after giving up several runs and loading the bases. It was a decision that was disconnected with how the game was playing out.
22
u/Jaerba Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26
The line of thinking falls apart when you lose 3 top 15 picks on defense.
23
u/KikkiMonne Sep 13 '26
Texas had all the momentum and they were forcing a bunch of 3-and-outs on Ohio State so stopping them at the goal line was the only viable option

There have been instances where fumbles have happened when playing with the clock like that instead of just scoring. I have heard that said about not waiting till fourth down to kick a field goal to take the lead too. In case a carry causes a fumble. So maybe that’s why sark tried to score. I’m not sure why Ryan Day not let Texas score though. He totally should’ve.

u/YeetedApple Ohio State Buckeyes • Big Ten Sep 13 '26
That's a good point. I still lean towards letting them score to get the ball back, but if you guys tried to play the clock too much and end up fumbling, sark would be getting clowned just as bad for not just taking the points.
Hindsight is always 20/20 in those situations.

This game was horrendous for the longest time for the longhorns
8
u/shahtavacko Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26
Because you apparently didn’t watch last year’s game. There were three goal line stands in that game. Any one of those goes a different way and Texas is tied with a minute left in the game and ball in hand. I know this is not the same Ohio D, but their offense had been stuffed twice during that quarter. You have to do your best to stop them.

I mean the whole thing for the last 2 years is how Texas can't punch it in from the goalline, including the semi-final game Ohio St won in that exact fashion. Might have had some influence here...

I was okay with it since OSU was expecting a last-second snap. Could've gone a few more secs, ofc.
11
u/TeeDeeTeeEcks Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26
This. It made sense to not snap it exactly when OSU would expect it. But they definitely still left too much time on it. There's a balance that can be found with these things and I hope Sark and Arch gets better at these decisions. It's a high pressure, high stakes situation and I think it's easy for us sitting on our armchairs to say that we would have done things a certain way when we don't know how we would react under pressure in those situations.
Case in point - a coach as successful as Ryan Day (best winning percentage in history?) is making these dumbass mistakes like not letting Texas score right away. There is no way in hell random redditors would be making better decisions under pressure.

How many times has Sark been stood up on the goal line? It was arguably a better shot than a one-minute drill with one timeout. I'd have more of a problem with the whole process of getting from 23-3 to the goal line.
7
u/MrMegiddo Texas Longhorns • TCU Horned Frogs Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26
Yeah I keep seeing people saying Day was a moron for not allowing Texas to score more quickly and that Sark was a moron for scoring too quickly.
First off, Sark won. So any criticism of what happened has to be looked at from the lens of, "he got the job done"
And as far as Day goes, Texas had clamped down on Ohio State in that last quarter. Making the assumption that you'd get into field goal range then make it (after missing one) is a pretty big leap of faith. Your defense had been out playing Texas most of the game. A stop there and Ohio State wins.
These takes are super weird considering the circumstances of the game.

If you are a G6 trying to shock the world and you know you absolutely can’t stop a big-money OL on the 1, that’s one thing. In a heavyweight game, line up and play. The rare times you see a defense trying to give up a score in a standoff against an offense trying to delay are just gross.
Sark has grown as a playcaller because at no point in that goal line sequence did the ball go 7 yards deep in the backfield.

tbf Ryan Day's Ohio State defenses have done exactly that against Sark led Texas offenses the last two years. I'm not surprised he thought they could do it again.
