For a coach with a Natty, Ryan Day has some of the worst clock management I’ve ever seen

126

u/mizaistorom Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

That team he had last year was by far the best team he's had all around, sure Sayin was young but they should have gone back to back with that defense.

17

u/ItsMeDoodleBob Sep 13 '26

Might have if Hartline didn’t take a job and give up play calling for the playoffs.

Retroactive positive karma for the 2011 robbery.

21

u/aquemini_me_pls Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

He sometimes has the 1000-yard stare before he fucks up his clock management

19

u/stiliophage Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 13 '26

I’ll say it…there are like 20 coaches who would have nattys if they had Ryan days exact rosters and a half dozen who would have multiple titles. Ryan day is not anything special and idk how the buckeye fans defend him year in and year out

Ryan day is not anything special and idk how the buckeye fans defend him year in and year out

Honestly, most don't. People have been sick of him for years because for years he's been doing this in the big games

60

u/karmew32 LSU Tigers • Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Sep 13 '26

John Cooper would also have a natty if 12 teams got in in his day.

10

u/midnightsbane04 Michigan • North Carolina Sep 13 '26

Nah, he'd just find a way to lose to Michigan again.

1

u/MadDog1981 Sep 13 '26

People also forget his bowl game record was pretty abysmal too.

53

u/rvasko3 Michigan Wolverines • Toledo Rockets Sep 13 '26

I'm not saying he's a bad coach, because it's hard to go that far.

But when you're able to amass the kind of talent OSU can amass and just reload year after year after year, you don't exactly need to be Bear Bryant to have a shot at a natty.

18

u/Roofus_Q Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

He should have more than 1 with all that talent

32

u/mjs_pj_party Michigan Wolverines • Colorado Buffaloes Sep 13 '26

Are you trying to say someone is standing on third base and thought they hit a triple?

18

u/Roofus_Q Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Even worse. Standing on third base and thought they hit a home run

7

u/Danimal4NU Nebraska Cornhuskers • KAU Lumberjacks Sep 13 '26

Ya, Larry Coker has a natty too because his team was just that loaded.

13

u/Hootinger Ohio State Buckeyes • Big Ten Sep 13 '26

The new years eve game against Clemson was terrible. Day basically handed it to them because of clock management failures.

87

u/Problem_Solvent Nebraska Cornhuskers • Team Chaos Sep 13 '26

I feel like OSU has that title DESPITE Ryan Day not because of him though.

58

u/Thelostsoulinkorea Sep 13 '26

There was a reason many fans were calling for his head before the Natty win.

27

u/western-information Sep 13 '26

Even after lmao

24

u/Thelostsoulinkorea Sep 13 '26

Honestly, I agree with them lol the man wins because of the talent pool he has, not because of any great coaching. How he doesn’t get Smith more involved each game is crazy.

10

u/ThoughtBroad Georgia Bulldogs • Arizona Wildcats Sep 13 '26

I mean Jeremiah had like 200 yards and 16 targets tonight

7

u/Thelostsoulinkorea Sep 13 '26

Today they did, however, I feel they throw to him when desperate. My problem is also they need to move him around more to create matchup problems as well as open the game. Also I just hate Day lol

3

u/ThoughtBroad Georgia Bulldogs • Arizona Wildcats Sep 13 '26

I also hate Ryan Day and his black kiwi shoe polish dyed patchy ass beard and hair

5

u/BasedRocker Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Sep 13 '26

I installed his aquarium and he’s a super chill laid back guy. I just question the freakouts and non-balls-having plays he has his team run in Q4 of close games. It’s starting to get mad annoying lol but good guy tho for sure

2

u/webbed_feets Ohio State Buckeyes • Texas A&M Aggies Sep 13 '26

I don’t like this line of reasoning.

So many college coaches recruit great teams and do nothing with them. Jimbo Fisher had amazing classes at A&M and barely made a bowl game. Texas squandered great teams for a decade.

5

u/EL_CHAPO_ESCOBAR Sickos Sep 13 '26

Kinda made sense after they won too. They were on the verge of choking that title game, but that prayer throw bailed them out

It's kinda impressive how quickly we all forgot the worst HC to win a national title.

10

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell Sep 13 '26

Sark also fucked up the last play snapping it with 30 seconds left

2

u/BLACKMACH1NE Sep 13 '26

yeah that made zero sense to me

3

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell Sep 13 '26

Broadcast literally showed him yelling at them to slow down etc and they have helmet mics… given you had a pause for review how do you not get the clock management right there.

1

u/BernankesBeard Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

And they had multiple timeouts

71

u/AggressiveWolverine5 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

He got his natty by having significant talent advantage, not by his coaching

2

u/Theretrulywascake West Virginia • Ohio State Sep 13 '26

Not his coaching chip Kelly's coaching

True. Maybe others learned the system and implemented it!!

20

u/rvasko3 Michigan Wolverines • Toledo Rockets Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26

Loads of senior/junior talent, NFL players up and down the roster, an NFL head coach at DC following up a now-Super Bowl winning coach at DC, an NFL coach at head coach (when he wasn't suspended, lol), huge investments in strength and conditioning plus developing the OL and DL as foundations, the Joe Moore-winning OL, finally getting a couple key pieces via the portal, using NIL funds to retain NFL-calibre players, and running through the OSU-Alabama-Washington gauntlet in our final three to win it.

I know you want to just assume that a bunch of cell phone videos taken by a try-hard mega-fan staffer and his cadre of special forces was the key, but it just wasn't. Stallions is a moron who could've just traded intel and watched film like other sign stealers do for their team. OSU also mentioned always shifting up their play signals.

But hey. You gotta cling to something, right?

With which ones? The ones arrested or completely embroiled in scandal? I forget

20

u/AggressiveWolverine5 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Two are head coaches in the NFL.

2

u/StrangelyOnPoint Michigan • Grand Valley State Sep 13 '26

Mike Macdonald was on Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan just not in 2023

7

u/AggressiveWolverine5 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Minter is a head coach

3

u/StrangelyOnPoint Michigan • Grand Valley State Sep 13 '26

I’m counting Jim too it’s 3

4

u/AggressiveWolverine5 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

We were discussing the 2023 team specifically. It’s funny they claim we won by having an iPhone video of a game played in a stadium with 100,000 people and a tv broadcast but us having a array of coaches who seem to be very good at this football coaching thing means nothing.

If I offered anyone which one they would rather have everyone would take a staff with 3 NFL head coaches.

-23

u/Early_Confection627 Ohio State Buckeyes • The CW Sep 13 '26

The embroiled in scandal ones. Got it

22

u/AggressiveWolverine5 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

You realize 3 of your last 4 head coaches were fired for scandals right? The only one that wasn’t was the one that couldn’t beat Michigan.

u/Early_Confection627 Ohio State Buckeyes • The CW Sep 13 '26

No they weren’t. Urban literally left on his own accord. Fickell left cause he sucked. Day is here. Tressel got the boot for shit 1/1000th of what your clown WMU team losers did. So 1? And Woody who won titles and you didn’t. Cool story

Not sure how this has downvotes on the CFB sub. Michigan cheated for their only real national title since 1948. The fact that their fans are on here attributing it to coaching and defense is insane.

Dirtiest program in college sports and somehow still getting away with it.

10

u/InitialMoose9291 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

But the season they won the scandal already broke so when they made the playoff run they didn't have that advantage. The wind against OSU, PSU, Alabama and Washington were all legitimate

-7

u/Opening-Eagle4761 Michigan State Spartans Sep 13 '26

“We only cheated half the season as far as anybody knows, and most of our staff also was banned or quit immediately after, and everyone involved destroyed all possible evidence and interfered with the investigation to such a degree that it’s impossible to know the full extent of the cheating” isn’t the flex you think it is.

2021-23 should be vacated. The program cheated.

-4

u/blankName_2 Sep 13 '26

Honestly, one of my biggest issues with Michigan under Harbaugh was how comfortable he seemed to cheat at the game. And I am certain other coaches were and are cheating all the time, but Michigan that year genuinely looked like it may have been the best team by a good margin. So him cheating was unnecessary and probably the result of a concerning habit.

All I'm saying is I hope Whittingham plays clean like he seems to want, moves the athletics department in a new direction, and blows all of Harbaughs records away. I don't mind Michigan being good, I just don't like Harbaugh (for other reasons than cheating too).

I realize humility is apparently impossible for Michigan fans, but just once it would be nice to see a single one be anything less than despicable online

6

Michigan and Michigan State have played 118 times. MSU has only won 38 of those. Ouch! That's really bad.

Pipe down, lil bro.

1

u/Opening-Eagle4761 Michigan State Spartans Sep 13 '26

Congrats, you beat up on schools in the first half of the 1900s which is not coincidentally the last time your school actually won a national title. I’m glad it’s still all you have in an argument

5

u/regarding_zacks Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Actually, we won a national title in 2023/4! Looking at the official NCAA website right now.

Have a good night lil bro!

Andy Reid has multiple super bowls and he was the worst in the NFL with the Eagles

A two-loss Natty. That's actually pretty rare.

7

u/Roofus_Q Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

For a coach with a top 3 recruiting class every year. Only having 1 natty is a disgrace

2

2019 and 22 were egregious that he didn't get them into the title game. 19 I doubt they're beating LSU lol, but they should've been able to get there. And 22 just pisses me off

1

u/yesacabbagez UCF Knights Sep 13 '26

Almost all coaches have horrific clock management. It's shocking to me how bad they are. It is an area I legitimately believe fans are better than coaches.

I'd tell these coaches to take like a month in the offseason and play madden or some shit. Get in a lot of 1 possession games in the 4th and actually focus the fucking clock. These guys act like they have no idea what to do when every single fan could instantly know when to call a timeout.

-4

u/UnappliedMath Texas Longhorns • UCLA Bruins Sep 13 '26

This is actually a bad take. He needed to use those timeouts at the end or they had no chance after Texas scored

3

u/itscheapinsurance Texas A&M Aggies • Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors Sep 13 '26

I know it’s counter intuitive but I feel like in games like this when the momentum is not on your side it’s better to just let the opponent score and save the clock and timeouts. Then one or two passes to number 4 and you kick a FG to win it. That defense wasn’t going to stop anything in the fourth.
