Absolute coaching disasterclass in the fourth quarter:

- Conservative play calling leading to back to back 3-and-outs

  • Not just letting Texas score as soon as they got to the 1 yd line

Edit: Also, Day inexplicably continues to gameplan around our ability to successfully make FGs

Not letting them score is so dumb. You have a 1:14 and TO. OSU would legit be favorites by every oddsmaker in that scenario. It’s just such dumb shit coaches get wrong constantly that is so annoying.

In Day's defense, they had two goal line stands vs Texas last year

13

u/TheFifthPhoenix Ohio State • Cincinnati Sep 13 '26

And this is a much worse defense than last year that had already been gashed the whole fourth quarter

u/mustachepc Sep 13 '26

Damn, now his descision does look reasonable

3

u/Exact_Tumbleweed2005 Sep 13 '26

He doesnt have last years dline, thats the problem. he should know his personel

True and Texas oline and RBs are improved

Yep. All-time coaching fuckup right there.

Yeah in the NFL Arch is getting picked up and carried into the end zone by a D tackle as soon as he hits the 5.

19

u/Unrelenting_Salsa LSU Tigers • Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

No, he wouldn't. The NFL does that when a FG wins. They don't do it when you actually have to punch it in and then need to score yourself with very little time. Very short yardage is very far from guaranteed.

Well, I guess not if it's the Eagles.

u/DrModel Michigan Wolverines • Wisconsin Badgers Sep 13 '26

I was being a little hyperbolic, but I'm guessing once Texas was down at the 1, an NFL team would be ushering them in on the next snap.

Honestly I thought Texas messed up snapping the ball on 3rd down so quickly. They had timeouts, they could have ran the clock down to 15 or so.

It’s so broken you almost feel like there should be some rule. modification to account for it.

10

u/Majormlgnoob Oklahoma State Cowboys Sep 13 '26

It's not broken, the team that scores just needs to play defense

23

u/Jaerba Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Especially with only needing a FG.

9

u/X_Circuit_Blossom_X Purdue • Michigan State Sep 13 '26

Best receiving core in the nation and would rather gamble on defense.

34

u/BKNas Alabama Crimson Tide Sep 13 '26

Ego. That's the only reason to not let someone score in that situation. You have a great offense, down by 1 with a good amount of time remaining to get into FG range. Day decided it's better to try and make 4 stops in a row and let Texas eat all the clock before burying OSU

That was such a meathead decision

19

u/John_Dingus Sep 13 '26

A great offense that just had multiple 3 and outs, and also missed a 45 yard FG by a mile.

5

u/iLikeEmMashed Ohio State • West Virginia Sep 13 '26

Mind boggling

4

u/X_Circuit_Blossom_X Purdue • Michigan State Sep 13 '26

They also ran it up the middle until they had to throw it

2

u/Mikeman003 Texas A&M Aggies Sep 13 '26

vs an exhausted defense that had been getting their shit kicked in every down for the past 2 possessions?

-5

u/John_Dingus Sep 13 '26

Ah yes the defense allowing zero 4th quarter points was "getting their shit kicked in"

8

u/Mikeman003 Texas A&M Aggies Sep 13 '26

Sorry, I mean the Ohio State defense was getting their shit kicked in. It's crazy to out the game on the guys who were already gassed

5

u/John_Dingus Sep 13 '26

I still think the odds of stopping them is higher than the offense going down the field and scoring. Their kicker just missed by a mile so they'd likely need a chip shot or a TD. And their offense already looked bad to begin with.

4

u/Jalapenoplanter Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 13 '26

Yea, I don’t think Texas was a guaranteed score.

1

u/Peanutbutternmtn2 West Virginia Mountaineers Sep 14 '26

Texas was dominating that possession and the osu defense was tired. If anything I think Texas was committed to getting as much clock off at that one yard line as they could. And that’s bc sark is competent.

8

u/multiple4 South Carolina • 九州産業大学 (Kyushu … Sep 13 '26

The same offense who couldn't even keep the ball long enough to eat any clock the whole 4th quarter?

Look it didn't work, but I don't consider it "bad coaching" to make a decision of whether to give the game to your defense or offense. It's a decision that can work either way, or can fail either way. It's going to look either really good or really bad regardless

6

u/Mikeman003 Texas A&M Aggies Sep 13 '26

Their defense was gassed and basically getting run over nonstop for 10 minutes so I don't think you want to depend on them getting 3 stops inside the 2. At least the offense has a chance

3

u/Unrelenting_Salsa LSU Tigers • Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

You could say very similar things about the offense. Only Jeremiah Smith was really working, and that stopped working in the second half.

2

u/mustachepc Sep 13 '26

There is a dewcision to be made if its forst and goal from the 8 but From the 1 is a no brainer, this game is on the hands of your offense. You are stopping this TD maybe 1% of the times

3

u/Lost_city Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

OSU stopped Texas in that situation twice last year...

2

u/ATLfinra Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

That was LAST year. He should’ve allowed the quick score and let the offense get back on the field. Stupid decision by him.

5

u/Lost_And_NotFound /r/CFB Sep 13 '26

Didn’t Texas famously fail with fort attempts from the 1 in the CFP semis two years ago?

1

u/PKSnowstorm Sep 13 '26

Yes but this team is much different than the one from two years ago in the sense that this team have big guys up front that can actually push and shove people instead of being saloon doors.

13

u/John_Dingus Sep 13 '26

Idk I think trying to hold them is fine. Teams don't always get a TD from the 1. One blown up play resulting in a loss of a couple yards changes everything. Hell, they almost fumbled.

4

u/KikkiMonne Sep 13 '26

You're ignoring momentum --- Texas had it and OSU didn't in the 2nd half

9

u/John_Dingus Sep 13 '26

I don't really see why that helps. If OSU didn't have momentum why would you expect them to march down the field and hit a game winning FG with a kicker who just missed by a mile

4

u/ryandutcher Ohio State Buckeyes • Team Chaos Sep 13 '26

Because they TD was inevitable. At least give yourself more time to try.

3

u/John_Dingus Sep 13 '26

It's not inevitable. They just stopped them twice on the 1 and their RB almost fumbled. I've seen teams get to the one and not score a TD numerous times. A penalty or a blown up play for a loss of yards would change everything.

3

u/lostpassword100000 Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Great point! Remember the playoff game between these two? Sark calls a slow play around the edge and OSU stops it for massive loss. Next play Ewers gets sacked and coughed it up. Ballgame.

-1

u/ryandutcher Ohio State Buckeyes • Team Chaos Sep 13 '26

It was. They were always going to score the TD there.

It was obvious.

8

u/Rainbowreever Sep 13 '26

This is just hindsight looking for something to blame.

-1

u/ryandutcher Ohio State Buckeyes • Team Chaos Sep 13 '26

No. The right call was to let them score. Save clock and have a timeout to get into field goal range.

Even neutral fans all over agree. It is what it is.

3

u/ATLfinra Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

I agree 100% I was like just let them score. You’re guaranteed to LOSE by letting them burn clock and score. At least on offense you have a chance to win

u/multiple4 South Carolina • 九州産業大学 (Kyushu … Sep 13 '26

I can't even tell which side you're on

I could use this exact same logic for why I should put the game on the defense rather than the offense

5

u/reshp2 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

It's like 15% chance of a successful goal line stand from there. I don't know what the odds are of OSU scoring a FG with 1:15 and one TO left, but I'm pretty sure it's significantly higher than 15%.

8

u/John_Dingus Sep 13 '26

I disagree. Their offense had been trash and their kicker missed a 45 yarder by an enormous amount. No way he's kicking a game winner imo.

0

u/KikkiMonne Sep 13 '26

Sayin was most likely gonna throw a pick on a Hail Mary getting into FG range --- Day knew that which is why he burned clock on the goal line stand

3

u/TroyMatthewJ The Game • Georgetown Hoyas Sep 13 '26

its a pride thing. they feel they can stop any team in that scenario.

2

u/moola66 Sep 13 '26

He probabaly went back to Miami game, where he let them score in that situation??

2

u/RaiderPower08 Texas Tech Red Raiders Sep 13 '26

1

u/Sharkbait_ooohaha Auburn Tigers Sep 13 '26

I wasn’t watching the game, was it a 1st and goal from the 1? Because otherwise I kind of wonder if the odds you get a goaline stop are vs scoring with 1:14 to go. College kickers aren’t automatic.

0

u/TimboCavo Sep 13 '26

They were up by 6. You don’t let them score when you are up by 6. You guys shouldn’t be trying to think this hard. You hold UT out of the end zone and you win.
