4 huge losses by Day over the last 4 years because of missed field goals. Not to mention going for it on 4th instead of just kicking it.

Also huge props to Texas for putting up 3 touchdowns in that second half. They could have easily folded but just kept working. They finally converted 4ths and RedZone when it mattered most.

Texas should have had at least 14 in the first half. We got hella lucky there.

19

u/ThrowMeAwayPlz_69 Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout Sep 13 '26

And don’t forget going for it in on 4th right before half

17

u/Sorge74 Ohio State • Bowling Green Sep 13 '26

That one was hmmm a bad play call. There was a lot of bad play calling....

I'm pretty sure that actually wasn't the correct choice since you don't want to give the ball back at mid field only down 10.

2

u/WallyMetropolis Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

The point, I think, is that Texas wouldn't have even tried had the score been closer. And take away just that one really weird int and it's almost certainly somewhere between a 10 and 14 point swing in the score difference.

Which isn't to say that's what the score "should have been" or anything like that. Just that Texas wasn't actually getting outplayed by as badly as the scoreline suggested.

8

u/kirk5454 Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Yeah that was a cursed half of football for us. If we lost I would have seen that Coleman drop in my nightmares

4

u/Sorge74 Ohio State • Bowling Green Sep 13 '26

Like I didn't love that Texas had 2 easily TDs the WR had 1% drops on....

u/weoutherebrah Texas A&M Aggies Sep 13 '26

Don’t forget not taking the chip shot on 4th and 2 when they were up 10-0

31

u/jeffp Florida Gators Sep 13 '26

Once they went for it a failed to convert, I knew it was going to come back to bite them.

13

u/Tommy05Sox Iowa Hawkeyes • Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 13 '26

When they didn’t convert and Herbstreit said it was a no brainer to go is when I knew it was a bad idea.

14

u/-KnAD223 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

No shit. Take the points. Good riddance.

2

u/weoutherebrah Texas A&M Aggies Sep 13 '26

In a rock fight like that game points are at a premium.

11

u/Business_Mastodon_97 Miami Hurricanes Sep 13 '26

My friend and I both text each other -- "They should have kicked the fg." What kind of decision was that?

2

u/Greatness143 Ferris State Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

Trusted Arthur Smith to make a good 4th and 2 playcall over just taking points. Classic blunder

u/MopeyBernese Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

This loss is on Day.

72

u/FuronPox123 Ohio State Buckeyes • Big Ten Sep 13 '26

Every loss is on the coach, but having a functional kicker would make me sleep a little better at night anyway

12

u/GFTRGC Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Anytime you make your kicker attempt 4 field goals, you're asking for heartbreak

10

u/TheBourbonTurtle Cincinnati Bearcats Sep 13 '26

He fooled us into thining he was alright in the first half. Really just the same old story. How can it be so hard to get a good kicker?

7

u/FuronPox123 Ohio State Buckeyes • Big Ten Sep 13 '26

when we failed to convert the 4th in the first half I texted my brother "oh my god, this is the 2019 Clemson game" and I've never been more right in my life, I fear

3

u/Jones127 Sep 13 '26

Nick Saban curse got transferred to him. Seems kickers were always one of the few weaknesses on a Saban coached team.

3

u/RVAforthewin Georgia Bulldogs • Arizona Wildcats Sep 13 '26

Didn’t Saban have Will Reichard, the all time leader in scoring in D1?

1

u/VintageRudy Oregon Ducks Sep 13 '26

Nobody in this age bracket has matured brains on a physical level. Absolutely incredible pressure to navigate in an industry doing 2.4b with the lens on you for a 4second do or die moment

8

u/GiraffesAndGin Notre Dame • Jeweled Shillelagh Sep 13 '26

Your kicker had one less point than your offense and you're ragging on him like he's some bum

4

u/luchajefe North Texas Mean Green • Southwest Sep 13 '26

This "Why are you kicking, your kicker's a bum ----> Why are you going for it, you need to kick" cycle is genuinely hilarious.

3

u/TickleMyIvory Michigan Tech • Michigan Sep 13 '26

How the fuck do you guys not ever recruit a reliable kicker lol

2

u/dunno260 Alabama Crimson Tide Sep 13 '26

Saban had like 1 in his entire tenure at Alabama. Every guy they brought in was highly rated though and we had a couple of misses on guys who went on to be great kickers (like Eddie Pineiro who was great at Florida and I think still in the NFL). Occasionally would pop up with a guy that wouldn't miss within 40.

But it wasn't until late with Reichard that Alabama genuinely had one of the best kickers in the country.

Should be somewhat easier in the transfer portal but still see teams missing it all the time now too.

1

u/potato_bus Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

I’m disappointed but will sleep just fine

14

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

This loss is on Texas.

12

u/Blu3iris Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Not at all. If you start going drive after drive scoring 0 points, you can put any coach in there you want. Sayin had too many missed throws once Texas dialed up the pressure. Not to mention it felt like they tried to just force #4 the ball after a certain point. OSU could have had 40 seconds or a full minute to score and I'm betting they'd come away with another goose egg with how things were going.

3

u/X_Circuit_Blossom_X Purdue • Michigan State Sep 13 '26

It's 100% on Day. Smith was tearing up the D the first half. Notda in the 2nd.

3

u/toomanyshoeshelp Indiana Hoosiers Sep 13 '26

Recruiting an all world team of 4/5 stars on offense and defense but having shit tier kicking is certainly a choice

2

u/goblue2354 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Like a throwback to those mid 2010s Bama teams that never seemed to have a kicker. At least Saban didn’t have the portal

4

u/Prerequisite Texas State Bobcats • Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

They have a more recent natty than us.

Both statements can be true.

7

Easily. I don't think the players were bad at all

16

u/thelandomanexperimen Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

I don't know watching the DL was like watching someone get punched in the face over and over.

6

No way, all the Ohio players are studs.

3 TDs in the 4th quarter

16

u/ZagreusMyDude Illinois Fighting Illini Sep 13 '26

You lost that game because of more than just a missed field goal though. That entire 4th quarter was terrible by absolutely everyone.

9

u/Skidda24 Ohio State Buckeyes • Illibuck Sep 13 '26

Don't get me wrong. Going for a touchdown shot instead of trying to convert before the missed field goal was awful not to mention the terrible play calling..

It's on the coaching staff for this one

-1

u/Sorge74 Ohio State • Bowling Green Sep 13 '26

Not to mention the uncalled DPI on that touchdown shot ...

1

u/Roofus_Q Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

It’s rigged

-1

u/Sorge74 Ohio State • Bowling Green Sep 13 '26

A lot of subjective penalties in the sport. Really footballs one real downside. Feels like other sports have far less of a problem.

2

u/goblue2354 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Feel like basketball is worse with subjective calls but football definitely has plenty, no doubt.

0

u/Sorge74 Ohio State • Bowling Green Sep 13 '26

Basket ball it's less impactful typically. In football a single flag changes game outcomes.

1

u/goblue2354 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

True that

0

u/Sorge74 Ohio State • Bowling Green Sep 13 '26

And you get statistics like Ohio States conference opponents have been called for holding 1 time in the last 3 years.

1

u/definitivescribbles Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

I don’t mind letting players play for it, but the gifted PI for Texas a drive before was pretty gross in comparison.

That said, that loss is on OSU and I don’t hate a fire lighting early season top 5 loss on the road for this team.

2

u/Sorge74 Ohio State • Bowling Green Sep 13 '26

Yeah the issue isn't the lack of flag it's the standard they set prior.

I agree with your second point. You can't lose Marquee OOC matchups you don't schedule them. Day only learns losing. Texas was a 5th ranked goal, making cfp, Michigan, CCG, title all more important

3

u/Hobo_Delta Georgia Bulldogs • Kentucky Wildcats Sep 13 '26

I’d say it was pretty good for Texas

0

u/KeThrowaweigh Ohio State Buckeyes • Maryland Terrapins Sep 13 '26

Oh absolutely, but the fact remains that the game is basically guaranteed to be over if that FG remains

17

u/FledglingNonCon Ohio State • Arizona State Sep 13 '26

Honestly didn't have an issue going for it in the 1st half. If we got a TD there it's 17-0. We remember the failures but not all the times we've made it and got 7 in those situations.

11

u/sportsdiceguy Sep 13 '26

I’m still a fan of Day, but these losses still sting.

6

u/Cowgoon777 Ohio State Buckeyes • The Game Sep 13 '26

hell of a lot better than Urban when we would randomly get obliterated by shit tier teams

i don't get the Day hate, losing by 1 or 2 against teams like Texas and Georgia isn't really a big deal to me. It happens. We lost by 1 to Oregon and then gave them an ass whipping later the same year.

Urban's losses were far more egregious.

3

u/Tuck_The_Faliban Indiana Hoosiers • Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

They mattered a lot more when only 4 teams made the playoff. College football used to be a little bit cooler.

Now if a top 5 loses to a top 5, it doesn’t even matter unless that team loses two more games.

OSU can still lose to Indiana or USC and make the playoff. Texas could have lost tonight and lost to LSU or aTm and still be in.

Takes some of the meaning out of the win, but takes some sting out of the loss.

2

u/Cowgoon777 Ohio State Buckeyes • The Game Sep 13 '26

but takes some sting out of the loss.

I have never been able to get too upset about losing to another top ranked blue blood. There's no shame in it

TTUN is different, I'd hate them even if they were the losingest team ever.

But for all the other blue bloods? No shame in hard fought games with them. Those matchups should never be easy

4

u/Roofus_Q Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

But you lost by 3 tds if Texas receivers could catch

2

u/Roofus_Q Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

It’s cause his only record that matters is 2-4

-3

u/Cowgoon777 Ohio State Buckeyes • The Game Sep 13 '26

I'm sure you cheaters believe that

lol full agree

17

u/buckeyefan8001 Ohio State • Bowling Green Sep 13 '26

Props to Texas especially for going for it (and converting) twice on fourth down on their own side of the field.

It was the right call (especially in hindsight) but still gutsy. They deserved to win

11

u/the_jobernaut Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Scared money don’t make money. Glad to see our coach has some balls

5

u/cirtnecoileh Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Those two 4th downs were big time plays from Arch, especially the first one being chased and hitting the TE across his body

2

u/the_jobernaut Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

What’s funny is Sayin made a similar play earlier in the game that had me just saying wtf over and over

5

u/PracticeAcrobatic748 Sep 13 '26

All the credit to Texas, but Day with some really bad choices. Chief amongst them is not taking that FG attempt in the first.

3

u/SaucePanino Sep 13 '26

I wish the field goal taking was the issue today. The bigger one is why they constantly get conservative will play calling. Sayin regresses so much in the second half

3

u/NimbleCrabb Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Sark clutched up. Proved a lot of people, including me, wrong.

3

u/Bob_Ricigliano_ Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Yeah I'm kinda shocked they didn't get stuffed up the middle 4 time in a row. That would have been very Texas.

3

u/Useful-ldiot Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

How could you possibly blame this on the kicker?

If you wanted the blame the refs, I could see that. Several blatantly terrible calls.

If you wanted to blame the coaching, I could see that. Horrific clock management.

If you wanted to blame play calling (coaching 2.0) I could see that. We completely took our foot off the gas.

But to blame the kicker because he missed 1 kick from 45+ whatever it was after making everything to date before that? Come on...

3

u/OnLevel100 Washington Huskies • Rose Bowl Sep 13 '26

Yeah credit to Texas for coming back. Arch's INT was pretty flukey, they probably shouldn't have been in that deep of a hole but they came back from it.

2

u/RunnyKinePity Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

I am so proud of them. Seriously in the third quarter I was telling myself we will never be on Ohio State level and why do we schedule them??? But yeah your coach was brain dead

2

u/HectorReinTharja Sep 13 '26

“We keep losing to bc of missed field goals!!!”

“Ugh just take the points man”

I feel like maybe day was trying to avoid the former when doing the latter?

7

u/coldsholder1 Ohio State Buckeyes • Toledo Rockets Sep 13 '26

Hell of a game all around. Sucks to lose, but hey a 1v4 matchup is anyone’s game. But man those field goals over the years are absolutely crippling. I haven’t felt confident even for a chip shot field goal for years

1

u/mizaistorom Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

Besides UGA and this one, what are the other 2?

6

u/ThisIsOurGoodTimes Ohio State • Ohio Northern Sep 13 '26

Indiana we missed a 20 some yarder. Michigan in 24 missed 3 short field goals I think. There was a miss in the Miami game last year too but less of a clutch moment.

1

u/CrimsonOOmpa Alabama Crimson Tide Sep 13 '26

They won the Natty a couple of years ago. It could be slightly worse. 😂

1

all 3 TDs in the 4th quarter!

That last FG attempt is good reason to not rely on a kicker lol

They lost cause they have the whole 4th quarter to just get one first down and couldn’t

1

u/RadiantWhole2119 Sep 13 '26

Missing the field goal was like 1 of 10 things that they choked with. One 3 point field goal miss doesn’t miraculously lose you the game when you’re up 23-3.
