Absolute coaching disasterclass in the fourth quarter:

- Conservative play calling leading to back to back 3-and-outs

  • Not just letting Texas score as soon as they got to the 1 yd line

Edit: Also, Day inexplicably continues to gameplan around our ability to successfully make FGs

Ryan Day coaches like such a coward for someone with that much talent on his roster

u/load_of_chode Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Literally the same reason we lost to Michigan in 2024. Ryan Day doesn't coach to win, he coaches not to lose.

When they settled for so many field goals, it felt inevitable. Even before the last FG attempt

The 2019 Clemson game is truly The Definitive Ryan Day experience.

u/Hanestein Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Idk, I think the Georgia and 2024 Michigan games were

14

u/BuckeyeForLife95 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

They all fall from the same tree of coaching incompetence, Clemson was just the first one.

2024 michigan game is a whole different thing. This is definitely 2019 Clemson and 2022 Georgia all over again. Just come out and dominate for a half and hope that was all that’s needed.

Texted my brother this was gonna happen.

And the one time we did not settle for a field goal the fanbase raked them over the coals.

Yeah it sucks.

But we still have 10 more games. Indiana, Oregon, and tTUN….

GG Texas.

And sometimes is also stupid. Like why go for it in chip shot range when up 10-0? Take the 3 points there and they win (all else held equal)

I’ve been saying this in the sub for the last 15 minutes lol. The game was still super close at that time. We had only scored off some pretty flukey turnovers at that point. Getting the extra cushion was the right play.

Also punted from Texas 38-39 I believe. Felt like that could have been a good spot to test his long kick ability.

You can't mess with the time-space continuum this way.

Change the score at that point and the butterfly effect changes something else later on.

I disagree, that was not a bad idea to go for it. What was a horrible thing was not to go for a short pass which was killing Texas the plays before that. The run game was ok before that.

Then he commits the same error again on a critical down in that 4th quarter by going for a deep pass on 3rd down, which should have been a pass interference since before that they were calling things, instead of again, going for a short pass

If its the PI that Im thinking of... the play shouldn't have even happened. There was a very obvious false start on that play, and another one one or two plays before that which weren't called

9

u/OkSpeed5766 Sep 13 '26

I couldn’t believe those weren’t called

7

u/Janus67 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

I fully expected to see a flag thrown with an everyone but the center call

12

u/NotMittRomney Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

the decision to go for it there is good

the decision to run behind 13P into a wall — which they’ve done consistently for years with zero success — on a down where they had to get two full yards is absolute malpractice

u/Greatness143 Ferris State Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

It was a bad idea going for it considering who his OC is: Arthur Smith. Trusting an Arthur Smith play call on 4th down is not known to be smart in 2026. This is coming from a Steelers fan.

7

u/Wagnerous Michigan Wolverines • Paul Bunyan Trophy Sep 13 '26

Yeah I thought that was a bizarrely terrible decision. Such a boneheaded call.

6

u/Tyrion_toadstool Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Im ok with going for it there, but I don’t love deep handoffs on 4th and 2. That just seemed like a bad play call.

4

u/Fletch71011 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 13 '26

Analytics say to go for that every time.

He coached a terrible game, but that's just using hindsight on that call. You absolutely go for it.

Looks like momma's wrong again

1

u/Jayharris52 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Cuz Day’s an idiot. He hired an idiot in Arthur Smith doesn’t that tell you dumb he is now?

7

u/RossiRoo Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Yeah that day was fun too!

5

u/dirtyjc13 Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

The Tom Herman masterclass

4

u/MyPupCooper Sep 13 '26

He expects the talent to win out. It usually does, but not always. If OSU doesn't make a big mistake they usually win - and he coaches expecting that.

3

u/CrimsonOOmpa Alabama Crimson Tide Sep 13 '26

"You play to win the game!!!"

3

u/Shallow-Al__ex /r/CFB Sep 13 '26

This is why John Harbaugh had to go for the Baltimore Ravens.

3

u/Superfluous_Play Notre Dame • Army Sep 13 '26

You guys had no business letting us even sniff a comeback in the natty game.

3

u/plutoisaplanet21 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

That was harbaughs problem too he just finally got a defense in 2024 that made it work

3

u/SlugsPerSecond Alabama Crimson Tide Sep 13 '26

He finally let his horses run in the 2024 CFP and then just stopped doing it

1

u/RockoPanda Clemson Tigers Sep 13 '26

They weren’t his horses, not really. Caleb Downs and Quinshon Judkins were developed by other coaches. Howard was a three-year veteran at a different place

7

u/scsnse Michigan Wolverines • Cornell Big Red Sep 13 '26

I know I'm going to sound like a troll rn, but dare I say that 2024 team won in spite of Day

2

u/WWF80sKid Michigan • Little Brown Jug Sep 13 '26

For some reason so many coaches do that… 🤦🏼‍♂️

2

u/Own-Sandwich6437 Indiana Hoosiers Sep 13 '26

If he had prime college version of Adam vinatieri, I actually would get his strategy in 2nd.

2

u/DuckDuckBangBang Illinois Fighting Illini Sep 13 '26

Mike MacDonald said on Hard Knocks this year that changing this mindset is what made him the coach he is. The difference is huge.

2

u/cardmanimgur Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

That's the most infuriating part. After we lost to Michigan in 2024 by playing like cowards, I felt like he said "fuck it" and we started just playing to win and being super aggressive. Beat the pants off teams in the title run, and then went right back to conservative ball. So frustrating.

2

u/--RandomInternetGuy Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

The second half of the Georgia game was the absolute epitome of this

1

u/sharkbait_oohaha Georgia • Florida State Sep 13 '26

Same reason you lost to us

1

It could be worse

He won the natty though. hard to argue against his ways.
