Intentional safety was 100% the correct call, but Bailey could not have executed that play any worse. Doing literally anything else would have almost certainly resulted in NC State winning this game.

He could’ve thrown the ball downfield out of bounds and just taken safety by intentional grounding by rule if I’m not mistaken.

As someone who played D1 football, the typical way this is coached is to slowly backpedal out of bounds and if someone gets close throw the ball 50 yards downfield out of bounds

Huh. They don’t coach that at NC State apparently.

I mean my coach was fucking Tommy Spangler who got fired at fucking PC - so if he knew it you’d think most would

That close to the end zone you just run out the the back of the end zone and take a safety. You’ll be up 1 with max 1 second left

If you throw the pass out of bounds with enough air time it can take 6 seconds off the clock by itself

But if you don’t take six seconds then they get the ball with an easy chip shot FG. Taking a safety guarantees that if there’s still time then the opponent gets the ball out of FG range

You’d only throw the pass when there’s less than 3 left on the clock…

The QB here just fumbled the ball because he was watching the clock. Just take the safety. It’s the lowest risk

Couldn’t agree more

My god we were coached this in high school 20 years ago. Just run out the back. No risk of fumbling that way
