Why didn't Portland State try scoring some points? Are they stupid?

Why didn't Oregon, the larger of the oregon schools, not simply eat Portland State?

Technically Portland State is larger by enrollment!

Good lord, PSU really is in decline! Their enrollment has fallen by more than a third in the last ~15 years

78

u/Prototype_es Washington State • Burning … 26d ago

Most universities have btw. Its a problem for some D2 and D3 schools that have significantly worse enrollment when they weren't all that large to begin with. WSU is currently dealing with their own enrollment decline problems as a matter of fact

25

u/owenmitchem Paper Bag • Pac-12 26d ago

True, but less so for “flagship” public schools, though Portland State is an R2 so not exactly at the same level as UO, OSU, WSU, or UW

I mean sure if you want another example, Eastern WA has lost almost 2k over the last decade too. I bet if I looked up Central Washington itd be the same. Part of me wants to feel bad for them until I see the tuition prices

Portland State is not larger by enrollment (by about 5000 students), unless you’re counting the percentage of Oregonians enrolled (85% or so vs 55% or so). In that sense, it’s a truer university of Oregon than the University of Oregon.

I was surprised to see so many Oregon fans confused as to why no one took it seriously. We don’t use point differentials after a certain point because most teams have a sense of sportsmanship. Gus Malzahn had a chance to set an all time points record in a bowl game at the music city bowl against Purdue in 2018, and instead he pulled back the offense. All I see from something like this is that Dan lanning probably is a bit of a jerk

Edit: Oregon fans read the comments please and look at all the comments already here. Stop giving me the same dumb response every 15 minutes. Someone else already said what you’re planning to say

u/cyberchaox Rutgers Scarlet Knights • Landmark 26d ago

Yeah. One of the funniest outcomes I've ever seen is a team winning 31-0 and failing to cover the spread. With these mismatches, margin of victory is meaningless.

71

u/fcocyclone Iowa State Cyclones • Marching Band 26d ago

That's the exact thing that makes predicting whether a team will cover or not in these early games so difficult. Almost always the question isn't 'can they' but 'will they choose to'. At a certain point, even if its not out of good sportsmanship, most blowouts in these buy games will turn into a glorified scrimmage where coaches will run things they've been wanting to work on, get guys deeper on the depth chart some time, etc.

4

u/HawkeyeHaven Iowa Hawkeyes 25d ago

Iowa put up 42 points in the first half against UNI. Finished the game with 55 points. It does come to a point where your offense continuing to score does not make your team look better, just assholes.

Lanning is a douche. Was reminded of that last week when a reporter asked him why Dante Moore wasn't available after the Oklahoma loss. Lanning replied that Moore was getting hydration "treatment" and reamed the reporter for asking a "personal health question" (as if Moore was getting chemotherapy or something lol). The interaction was so obviously Lanning looking for the smallest excuse to take out his anger on the press.

305

u/BIRDSBEEZ Oregon Ducks 26d ago

That was the douchiest answer ive ever seen from him. Sounded so salty like he was holding angry tears back. Then tried to belittle the reporter. Stuff like that Dan needs to change

199

u/Mitchford Auburn Tigers 26d ago

People in the sport in general right now are way too hostile to reporters. They’re doing their jobs and everyone is absolutely gunning for them. It’s like yelling at a waiter cause they ran out of an appetizer as if the waiter has anything to do with it

88

u/BIRDSBEEZ Oregon Ducks 26d ago

I’m not a fan of sports “reporters” at all but you should just give them short, direct answers instead of degrading them.

110

u/Mitchford Auburn Tigers 26d ago

Even then, what really is the problem? There’s some bad columnists like at AL.com but this whole Trump impersonation every coach is obsessed with doing to show how anti “the media” they are is annoying. It’s all a game, it’s literally just a game, and the reporters are their to write articles about that game. It isn’t deep in the least

When a reporter asks a question you don’t like and you almost immediately shift to attacking them, you simultaneously ensure everyone assumes the worst possible response is the true answer to their question, demonstrate your total lack of fitness as a leader, and generally come across as a grade A classless douche….at least in my opinion.
Unfortunately, that approach has recently proven to somehow be relatively effective on the general public and is becoming more commonplace inside and outside of the sports world.

I worked with a developer who had all this flashy stuff - clothes, watches, bags - I know he was getting paid really well so didn’t think too much about it. But he was constantly sweating. By the buckets. This was in Miami at the time so I could relate to the sauna that Florida is. But I was always confused and concerned about him bc our office was freezing cold.

Covid hits and he goes missing - he tells his manager he has covid and was in the hospital. Ok. That kinda tracks.

After a bit, law enforcement reaches out to the company and they let us know he was arrested for domestic abuse and during their search found significant amounts of drugs that showed intent to distribute. So his twitchy and sweating antics started to make sense as did the bling. He gets fired and later on passes away. He was around 30. Crazy shit. But he hid that in plain sight.

I haven't seen the game but four quarterbacks played and fourteen(!) receivers caught passes. Is it wrong to let the back benchers open up the playbook when they get a chance to play?

93

u/Mitchford Auburn Tigers 26d ago

Pulling back the offense doesn’t just mean pulling starters, it means running clock and letting the game end. Any other top 25 team could’ve done this it isn’t impressive.

39

u/DadBod_FatherFigure Miami Hurricanes 26d ago

We scored 77 through 3 quarters against FAMU and then cut the 4th quarter to 10 minutes and ran the clock out. We could have easily hung 100 on them with our reserves in. To be honest even 77 felt unnecessary.

why is only oregon getting a post for this when theres multiple 70+pt blowouts every week

43

u/ChosenBrad22 Nebraska • Wayne State (NE) 26d ago edited 26d ago

I was going to argue with you because I saw no one else won by more 60 this week except Oregon, and they were 84. But when I looked at last week there was like 4 games of 70+ blowouts.

I think what put people off was still trying to score til the end when you’re up by 70+ and could have clearly just taken a knee to end the game.

It’s kinda like a basketball team that’s winning by 50 with 10 seconds left on their last possession, running down to do an ally oop dunk instead of just dribbling out the clock. I wouldn’t be outraged by it but it’s definitely kind of a dick move.

14

u/LegallyAFlamingo Team Chaos • I'm A Loser 26d ago

Which is a shame because what the y should be upset about is Oregon going for it on 4th down, in the 4th quarter, while up 70 and again while up 77, against an FCS team that has had 1 win since 2024.

I mean for me it’s fuck Oregon always and forever but I don’t know what the Ducks are supposed to do there.

52

u/Actuaryba Oklahoma State Cowboys 26d ago

It’s dumb. What are the backups supposed to do? Not try? They are fighting for starting spots and well and want to show they can play too.

48

u/WhatTheDuck4 Oregon Ducks 26d ago

The last drive was almost entirely players not even listed on the depth chart. Those guys deserve a chance to perform. It would fucking suck if your only snaps were kneeling the ball.

Oregon had their starters out the entirety of the 2nd Half. They had the 4th String QB in at the end of the game.

44

u/Actuaryba Oklahoma State Cowboys 26d ago

I guess apparently he and the other backups who are fighting for playing time are just not supposed to try so feeling don’t get hurt. It’s a horrible take.

Cringy ass unspoken rules bullshit. If your team is upset by getting the score ran up on them maybe don’t let them run the fucking score up.

They were playing guys not even listed on the depth chart… like I get that the score got ugly but what do you expect them to do, tell those guys to just not try?

Running clock at halftime probably. Let's be honest, this game wasn't scheduled to get a workout, Oregon's practices are probably more intense.

Run the ball i think is the typical answer, and kneel. Oregon was throwing and scored a TD when they could have kneeled the clock out

I've never understood why coaches put their backups in and run dive plays in blowouts: it's much more useful imo to have backups run the real offense in case you need them later on.

26

u/MartianMule Oregon • Western Washington 26d ago

Yup. This was the first time Akili Smith had gotten into a game. So they had him throw the ball a few times.

LSU took a knee against us in 2011 like halfway into the fourth quarter. It's a much worse way to go.

5

u/Delta1225 Iowa Hawkeyes 26d ago

Can I say it's different when it's an obviously inferior opponent (in this case from the FCS).

When OSU was transitioning to FBS they played UNC and ended up using a running clock the last quarter and lost 80-20 if I recall.

It would be more disrespectful to simply kneel imo. Portland came to play a football game. Portland could've asked for a running clock or shortened 4th, but chose not to.

The ducks had their 4th string QB and like 8th RB and 3rd string OL. They’re didn’t even run RPO or truck plays or weird offensive plays. Just ran it. Getting game reps for these dudes. PSU could’ve just stopped em.

If you're winning this badly while being deep in your depth chart, I see no issue.

17

u/CrOS2012 26d ago

I didn't follow the game, didn't check the stats/results, but if second and third stringers are in the game, aren't they still expected to try and play to their fullest? That's what they're there for after all. Special teams exception, of course ('cause they never get enough reps). And, yeah, they were well paid for their contribution to Oregon's practice regimen.

15

u/desertSkateRatt Oregon Ducks • Sickos 26d ago

4th stringers were in before the 4th quarter even started. They played 4 different quarterbacks and guys who never see any time on field were out there trying to prove their worth for the BOTTOM of the depth chart.

Its not like the fans stormed the field after getting a mulligan on a hail Mary try and time added back to the clock or anything...

Without this game Portland State's athletic department would be struggling for funding and which is why PSU fully agreed to this game... after losing 81 to 7 in 2023, 62-14 in 2018, 69-0 in 2010... in fact all seven times PSU agreed to play Oregon they have lost with the closest game being when Oregon won 41 to zero against them 24 years ago.

Portland St. isn't crying. They got a fat check to ride a bus to Eugene for an ass beating. That check will greatly help their athletic department.

Oregon put their bench in... Are they just supposed to take a knee and not try? That would be even more embarrassing than 84-0.
