Peak Chiles experience:

1) Every play is a coin toss between ass and generational.

2) can absolutely lead comeback drives

3) can absolutely come up short when it matter (2 pt conversion keeper)

4) volatile play keeps your fanbase in limbo on whether he’s the problem or the team failed him (this debate doesn’t end when he leaves)

It’s nice today he split it into two clean halves for observation purposes.

He’s so much fun. High upside agent of chaos is infinitely more interesting than anything we’ve ever trotted out at the position. One play he strip sack fumbles out of bounds (barely), 4 plays later we’re 70 yards downfield in the end zone. King shit

He definitely is fun. The two main problems at MSU were a bad offensive scheme and the entire team being undisciplined.

Someone as volatile as Chiles at QB needs his coach and team to be a tight ship around him to act as a stabilizer. If you guys had a better run game he’d be even more dangerous because if he’s playing off that night you pivot to a more run heavy scheme.

He definitely struggles a bit with football IQ and relies more heavily on instinct, which only adds to the experience lol.

Our run game was solid first couple of weeks, which he definitely benefitted from. Run D is just a strength for the Hoosiers, so he had to play hero ball today (which he did as well as we could have hoped)

Well, as my original comment pointed out. He did a great job playing hero ball in the 2nd half.

But if he had been a more stable QB in the first half would that have been necessary? Or better yet those heroics lead to you stomping Indiana on their home turf.

It’s really the dilemma with a guy like Chiles. He’s gonna win you game and lose you games far more than a QB normally would, which honestly sounds ridiculous but it’s just what it is.

All valid points

Run game is usually one of our strong points – we have 3 extremely capable RBs. But our best OL man is out and Indiana was ready for us, they put up a strong run D tonight

Having Kelly as your OC will allow you to cover up a lot of negatives though.

I mean, most things are better than whatever the fuck Smith and Brian Lindgren were cooking up lol.

Also there were some bad passes that receivers kinda bailed him out on.

But I don’t focus on that too much as what’s considered a catchable pass for a receiver only becomes a larger area as the talent level of WRs goes up.

I still don’t get how two allegedly Xs and Os coaches were so incredibly bad. The things they got wrong were just so fundamental it made it hard to believe that staff had ever been competent

My reaction to this game is that Jonathan Smith cannot develop a quarterback at all. Chiles has the tools to be a good QB. He did great in the 2nd half.

Chiles has always had the tools to be a 1st round quarterback in terms of athleticism/arm strength. His accuracy and decision making were the problems (which really goes with your point that Smith / the old MSU staff really failed to develop him properly).

I mean, yeah, Smith and Lindgren were awful. Chiles 100% has the physical attributes to be a great QB, the problem is his decision making.

Bad coaching really compounds bad decision making.

He looks improved, but I watched enough of him at MSU to know it’s not that massive of a leap from flashes of hero ball he’s shown before.

I think it was more of a function of us having a very bad offensive line

That 2 pt keeper is 100% on Kelly

Definitely not the best play call, but there was absolutely some failure to execute on it as well.

Kelly and this Nw team definitely have the passing game far more figured out than the run game.

I don't even remember northwestern running the ball tonight tbh lol

Eh, first half today he had horrible field position and he had no running help from anyone. Awesome game from him and he looks like he's taken a step up from his MSU days.

He only made one single bad decision today, and it was that brutal intentional grounding. MSU is just coping.

u/Kvetch__22 Northwestern • Penn 21d ago

Actually yeah he was 22/29 for 293, 2 passing TDs and another on the ground. IDK what more you could ask of a guy against a top defense? Maybe don't fumble twice?

1

u/AdamOnFirst Northwestern Wildcats 21d ago

One of the fumbles wasn’t even on him. His bad decision was the intentional grounding and he hasn’t turned it over in three games and the fumble on the sideline last night was the only time he’s risked doing so. He’s been super clean.

This is what I'm thinking reading these comments. A lot of people were just introduced to his game for the first time. They've erased the first half performance from their memory, and assume he will build on the second half. Maybe he does this time, but we've seen this rollercoaster before. Either way, I'm excited to watch him.

4

u/ID10T-ERROR8 Michigan State Spartans 21d ago

Yeah, combined with bad coaching a rebuilding MSU was not the right spot for him.

Glad he’s doing well as NW, but I definitely see another fanbase that’s gonna be so split on him later in the season.

He reminds me of Bryce Underwood in a way, except obviously older and more adjusted to college.

Underwood is a pretty fair comp where they are each at currently. Either way, every drop back is an adventure. For who? No clue.

that 2pt call was a dogshit call by the OC. Who the fuck even has that in the playbook

u/KingBlank Nebraska Cornhuskers 21d ago

That keeper was a terrible play call, you are going to run that you have the running back option follow.

u/dr_dan319 Iowa Hawkeyes • Floyd of Rosedale 21d ago

That was a terrible call for the 2pt attempt. Compare that to the naked boot Hoover scored on

I tuned in just to put some money on the dog; so I'm not at all familiar with the teams or the players. My eyes on that one game tell me Chiles isn't good, really. But, it's college ball and even at the higher levels of FBS the kids regress to some unhinged high school shit.
