We just locked a thread discussing the hit on Moore because of too many rule-breaking comments.

This is a reminder to not break said rules or we will lock this one as well.

Absolutely great news. The scariest part to me wasnt the knockout fencing reflex, it was the seizure like spasms that followed. So if hes conscious and has intentional movement in his extremities that is a HUGE positive sign. Bad concussion still, but possible its just that and nothing worse.

29

u/Miss_May_1600 20d ago

It was very jarring to see. Fortunately concussive convulsions (impact seizures) alone are not a prognostic factor for CTE or post-traumatic epilepsy. So it’s possible this will just be a bad concussion. I really hope so. Shame on Stephens.

unconscious on the field yes. he very much was with the way his body hit such a hard fencing reflex. but regaining consciousness to move his extremities during transport is what im referring to

100% - the reaction was much worse than the actual hit. I wouldn't be killing the kid if he had shown remorse and concern when he realized Moore was hurt.

35

If it seemed in any way that he simply couldn't react fast enough I would be more sympathetic to the defenses of him. He CLEARLY meant to do what he did.

Probably coping know he was in the wrong. Unfortunately that seems to be the trend these days with these young entitled brats. Can’t take any accountability so they go with the “look at me” attention grabbing approach instead. I wish he’d get booted off the team but I’m guessing that won’t happen.

11

I’m willing to give Thibs the benefit of the doubt because, ironically, he was lying down next to Foles and likely didn’t see that he was hurt. With this play, everyone in the stadium knew he was hurt and he kept celebrating while moving to the sidelines. Completely diabolical and borderline evil.

That's the only time I've ever seen a trainer shove a player out of the way to get to an injured player.

The bigger issue here is how long it took the USC coaching staff to come on to the field and retrieve their players. I'm also shocked that there wasn't a taunting penalty levied against Stephens on top of the targeting call.

Go watch MAC games. Everyone in the stadium stfu when a player is hurt. Sometimes, if it’s really bad, you can literally hear the player yell in pain cause everyone goes silent when there’s an injury. Both teams still do it, just not the ones that operate like a mercenary team

USC is trash top to bottom. Never expect any class from them in any circumstance.

135

u/TheSquirrellyOne 21d ago

No one is surprised to see USC act that way. But at the same time, it speaks to a much larger societal problem of lack of empathy. Empathy is “weak.” That said, I’d like to think Lanning would kick him and anyone else celebrating the other player seizing off the team.

41

u/carguymt Kentucky Wildcats 20d ago

it speaks to a much larger societal problem of lack of empathy

The National Review has been pushing the notion that empathy is somehow bad for decades now. It's no wonder lacking it is common these days. America's worship of individualism is toxic and we are seeing it come to its logical conclusion with everything that we've seen the last decade or so.

Gives me a little more hope for humanity. And to be clear, I'm not necessarily against the hit. Was it highly questionable? Sure. But the reaction of him and [some of] his teammates tells me all I need to know, which is that the intention was to injure/maim. No place for that in any sport, at any level.

29

u/WhyNotAthiest 20d ago

The last two weeks had major head injuries in which a player was taken off the field on a stretcher and put in an ambulance. Both of the opposing teams took a knee out of respect for the downed player.

This is strictly a USC thing and doesn't at all reflect the rest of college football.

Just so unnecessary. Then celebrating and continuing to be all giddy on the sideline after the penalty, fucking pathetic. Players that act like they did something amazing after knowing they clearly injured someone is just peak scumbag. And the pertinent USC coaching staff classless as well with their lack response to the player. Trash.

244

u/Jay_Dubbbs Ohio State Buckeyes • Georgia Bulldogs 21d ago

I agreed with JP's analysis at halftime. Moore slid a little late, and it is hard to stop your body from moving; it's completely plausible that the hit wasn't intentional and it's just a football incident.

But his behavior afterward was jaw-dropping, distasteful, disgusting, upsetting, ridiculous, tone-deaf, idiotic, disrespectful, and unacceptable.

139

u/shinypond Wyoming Cowboys 21d ago

Without the reaction, sure. But the celebration is what makes it obvious that it was intentional, imo. Imagine the QB wasn't injured, what would there be to celebrate? The other team just picked up a first down in the red zone

12

u/VegasWinsDa26Cup 20d ago

This right here. If you watch the replay, the guy doesn't even start celebrating until he realizes that Moore is badly injured.

In all honesty, with how moronic this bum on USC tackles, he will probably end up paralyzing himself on a bad tackle attempt before he graduates...

It was crazy, I’ve never seen anything like that. Moore was 80% of the way down already, he literally didn’t accomplish anything beside injure him. What the fuck did they have to be excited about? Either the DC or DBs coach should be suspended, because that’s a culture issue.

It’s very clear he was celebrating injuring him. It’s one thing to get up and celebrate a big hit, this kid took a damn victory lap around the stadium, one clip I had seen went on for 30 seconds of celebrating before the video cut off, and he was still cheering when it cut off.

u/Sad_One_6647 Florida State • Mount Allison 21d ago

Im Canadian and played decent level Hockey for 15 years and HS Football, one of the things that irks me about CFB is the hesitation to defend your teammates especially the QB. I know punishments are more severe but at some point you as a team need to make it clear this shit is unacceptable and this was totally grounds for a brawl. Refs prove time and time again that they don't do enough to keep people safe and there needs to be a level of self-policing like in Hockey

31

u/heyheyitsandre Michigan Wolverines • Miami (OH) RedHawks 21d ago

I’m a lifelong hockey player also but not a meathead one by any means, I can count on zero fingers the number of stupid beer league fights I’ve been in or real fights when I was playing. But there’s is an objective truth to the concept of if your QB gets cheap shotted and someone immediately responds and rocks the other teams shit, it is absolutely less likely it ever happens again. I mean the enforcer role from the 80s and 90s was an actual thing, no one was going to throw something dirty at Yzerman with Bob Probert sitting on the bench. If you do your face is getting caved in 90 seconds later lol

Your QB gets decked and someone immediately takes the defenders head off in response? Bet he doesn’t get anything late next game lol. Coach can decide if the flag / suspension was worth it, but that QB is almost certainly safer next week after the next opponent sees the response this week

10

u/Sad_One_6647 Florida State • Mount Allison 21d ago

I grew up in the Maritimes playing Football and Hockey here, both Sports here are considerably more rough than in other regions and especially in shit like Midget and Junior Hockey there would be stretches of 7-8 games straight per season where we would have full on brawls every game (And lets just say I didnt make my teams for being a skill guy lmao) due to the amount of hot-headed Country and Rez kids like myself and extremely poor officiating. Its like a kid playing with a stove, he's gonna keep trying until he gets burned instead in this case its a 6'3 180 defensemen or 300 Lb Lineman trying to break your nose. Its why I get kind of upset when people say fighting doesn't belong in sports. I agree toxic masculinity and the testosterone backed dick measuring is harmful but there have been way too many times in my life I have seen fighting keep the game safer and prevent teams from just throwing cheapshots all game and potentially giving people life-altering injuries

As an EMT that is standard for pretty much all trauma injuries involving the head/neck as a precautionary measure to not cause further damage during transport. That doesn’t necessarily dictate the severity or seriousness of the injury.

76

u/PeteAndPlop Ohio State • Marshall 21d ago

Yupp, standard of care for any head/neck injury in football (really any sport) where cervical injury can’t be ruled out. If a player is unconscious/too confused it’s assumed since they can’t respond to commands. Risk for harm is basically zero compared to benefit, so it’s one of those “if you have to ask yourself should we stabilize the c spine?” the default answer is always yes.

Does anyone here know what the rules are on what happens next?

Is it just the flag? Or could that USC player get suspended for a few games? Crazy to celebrate damaging someone’s brain.

30

u/TheSquirrellyOne 21d ago

I suppose the powers that be can have him suspended longer than one game, despite what the rule book says. But we’ll see. They seem to love riding USC’s dill so it seems unlikely

6

u/TempAcct724 Utah Utes 21d ago

The rule was updated recently.

Used to be that the player was ejected for the rest of the game, and if the targeting happened in the second half, for the first half of the next game.

Now a first offense is just the remainder of the game with no additional penalty. A second targeting offense is an additional half game and a third is a full game suspension.

u/tanktronic 20d ago

So u can scramble 3 guys' brains before missing ONE game. Way to protect the kids.

The celebration put it over the top. Now from a strictly "you made your bed, and now you lie in it" type of morality, other teams and fans can cheer and taunt injured USC players. That's a red line you just don't cross.

75

u/EugeneGrowGuy 21d ago

There needs to be some type of recourse by the university for the celebration and him being allowed to stay on the sideline. Unbelievably disrespectful on a human level and has no place in the sport.

Celebrating giving the opposing QB a serious head injury?  That jagoff makes Vontaze Burfict look like a perfect gentleman.  If I were Lincoln Riley he'd never play a down in a USC uniform again.

Football is a violent game, and plays happen fast. Trying to be objective here, and while the hit looked intentional to me, under normal circumstances the USC player probably could make a case that it wasn't - the old tried and true "plausible deniability" card. But the celebrating tells me a very different story, and it comes down to "what exactly he was celebrating?". This wasn't a sack, a TFL or a broken play. Dante Moore had just successfully rushed for 10 yards and a 1st down, and Oregon was inside USC's 13 yard line ready to score...so that is not a reason to celebrate. Dante Moore slid, so it's not like the USC player made a great play or contributed to the down...so that is not a reason to celebrate. But there he was celebrating, even tanuting. The only explanation I can come up with is he was celebrating taking the opposing QB out of the game, which proves to me that it was 100% intentional...and possibly even stealth-encouraged by the coaching staff.

Just want to tell you guys, this is standard medical reporting with any head injury with loss of consciousness, and there is absolutely no reason to believe there is any cervical injury in my opinion. I am as confident that he does not have a cervical injury as I am that you the reader do not have a cervical injury. Mechanism and response fully consistent with head injury and inconsistent with cervical injury. He will be ok.

11

u/biomannnn007 Texas Longhorns 21d ago edited 21d ago

I mean, he was hit in the head and could have hyperextended the neck. We don’t know the degree to which his movements are intact, we just know that he’s moving the fingers and legs. He can still have weakness in those movements, even if not paralyzed. If he does have weakness, this would all be consistent with central cord syndrome. His helmet, age, and physical fitness probably protected him, making central cord syndrome less likely, but you can’t rule it out without the imaging in the hospital.

Wow. Chris Simms blaming Dante Moore for getting hit was not on my 2026 bingo card…

What a POS

14

u/HonoluluMaizeandBlue Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

Simms made his statement, and then somebody else spoke as well and then Simms felt the need to clarify that although Dante Moore slid late, there was no excuse for the celebrating on the sidelines. I don't know if someone was literally in his ear asking him to address it, or if he wanted to just clarify.

55

u/Schmenza Harvard Crimson • Tulane Green Wave 21d ago

Fuck the dude celebrating but QBs need to start sliding earlier

166

u/Aggressive_Intern778 Memphis Tigers • Tennessee Volunteers 21d ago

Did he blame him for getting hit or did he accurately point out a late slide on a bang bang play?

USC player might be a piece of shit for the celebration but let’s not act like he’d been down for a long period of time. Just a very unfortunate outcome.

131

u/2chainzzzz Oregon Ducks 21d ago

They cut to commercial, came back, and he was still laughing and dapping on the sidelines.

And, it was helmet to helmet on a slide. Any defender should expect that this day and age

56

u/alfooboboao USC Trojans 21d ago

yeah the laughing and celebrating was the problem.

it was clearly a shoulder to helmet hit, not crown to crown, but that distinction doesn’t matter AT ALL when someone’s in the hospital your whole team’s body language screams “oh hell yeah! we KOd their best player”

it’s awful, I would be so fucking upset if the situation was reversed. this is no fun anymore

It absolutely was his fault. It sucks, but it happened because he slid late.

The celebrations were garbage. But the hit was all on the QB.

143

u/purplebuffalo55 UConn Huskies 21d ago

Yea I was gonna say from the outrage I thought he would have slid super early … it was pretty late. The celebration afterwards makes it clear the hit was intentional, but it was still a late slide

VLC media player lets you count frames and the video posted is in 60fps. I think Moore obviously starts a slide about 12 frames before the defender hits him. You could argue that he starts a slide at as high as 20 frames before impact. So the time from slide to the defender hitting Moore is between .2 and .333 seconds, depending on your reading of the slide.

And if I'm arguing with myself over when the slide starts frame by frame, a guy on the field with a helmet on running is also going to have a delay in recognition.

If you're kicked out of the game you should be sent to the locker room minimum. Preferably removed from the stadium to the bus until the game is over.

Edit: Not saying this is the rule. Saying it is how it should be.
