How is their site so buggy in 2026?

I imagine the traffic is crazy the first 20 minutes or so but yeah cmon

Should be easy to handle though, they've only been publishing this thing for a century. They know what the traffic surge is going to be, they can scale.

I have to imagine the amount of scrapers they get hit with in the first 20 minutes is wild.

ESPECIALLY with how easy it is to vibe code now.

I also work in software. 20 minutes of scaling ~16 times a year seems like a no brainer. Probably doesn't cost them that much all things considered and it could be argued protects one of the most important brands in college football.

Yeah, sure. But I get your point. I guess it just depends on how much they value brand image. You're probably right, some suit somewhere just says no and that's all there is to it.

Idk how much it would actually cost, but I can’t imagine the Associated Press is strapped with cash

Strapped for cash, or flush with cash?

And convince your best tech people to work Sunday mornings?

AP Bro, do you even autoscale?

20 min of scaling to serve 35 records is practically free. The cost is paying an engineer to implement it

1

u/radil LSU Tigers • Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 20d ago

Surely they’re on aws or azure or gcp. Should be a few clicks lol.

They have got to be, no way ap has on prem servers. I would guess they contracted a company to set the site up and have no engineers

1

u/radil LSU Tigers • Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 20d ago

Yeah, that's probably a safe bet.

Probably not worth to spend all that money to stabilize servers for a 20 minute surge 7 times a year

It's not even a dynamic site loading all sorts of user-submitted comments hitting the database, with a different view for each of billions of users (the same way that reddit/twitter/facebook show a different front page to different users who are logged in). It's a bunch of schools in the exact same order for everyone who comes to the site, refreshed once a week. That should just be cached text that the web server can spit out without any issues, no database hits whatsoever.

Says our next game is 11/27. Helluva bye

7

u/Jmc_da_boss Clemson Tigers • Alabama Crimson Tide 20d ago

Because software was hit with a nuclear bomb about a year ago and has gotten significantly worse continually sense then

3

u/the_lost_carrot Alabama Crimson Tide 20d ago

Yeah I didn’t realize Alabama’s next game is 11/21.

It randomly just says Mississippi State plays Golden Eagles next week and doesn't even list the whatever school that is lmao

u/Alkibiades415 Georgia Bulldogs • Stanford Cardinal 20d ago

8 hours later, and it still shows Georgia's next game as Florida (incorrect) and several others.

I think it’s still hosted by Geocities.

Skewed logos. Wrong schedule. It’s a fucking joke how bad it is

Have you seen the ESPN app recently? Holy shit it’s been bad forever but now it’s actually unusable.
