USC above Oklahoma State feels… inconsistent?

I think the Tulsa loss is still biting OSU. Also probably doesn't help that Tulsa got boatraced by Arkansas

That’s exactly my thought process. Ranking is more than fair based off that. I’m just ecstatic we are back in the top 25. I was prepared for some dark times after the past few seasons but dare I say I’m a bit optimistic

USC above Boise State is also inconsistent. We lost to Oregon by less, away instead of at home, against their starting QB. And our wins against Western Michigan and Memphis are much better than any win USC has.

Gonna need a few more weeks before a lot of voters are going to forgive the Tulsa loss. Probably fair. But in weeks 2-4, we’ve been a top 10-12 team.

Highlighted by the fact that Northwestern is 2-1, with a huge win over another P4 and a very close loss to the defending national champions on the road and getting 1 singular 25th vote.

Either Indiana is not t10 or Northwestern deserves more than a single vote.

I’m not sure which, yet. I suspect a little of both.

141

u/OwnWalrus1752 Indiana Hoosiers 20d ago

Northwestern has one loss and it was a 6-point road loss to the top-10 defending national champion. Kind of ridiculous not to give them more credit when OSU got to jump Indiana because they lost a close one against the (now) #1 team.

u/B0Boman Oregon State Beavers • Marching Band 20d ago edited 19d ago

The AP poll is a popularity contest more than a real ranking of best teams, though it can often approximate the latter. Winning helps make your team popular, but it's not the only factor.

There should be at least 3, possibly 4 teams ranked, but conferences rely on their marquee/ranked teams to carry them and ACC hasn’t done much to help themselves. Also poll inertia is doing a lot of work here. Easy for SEC teams to stack ranked wins when like 80% of the conference starts in the top 25.

Louisville and UVA seem to be making the poll voters a little bit reticent to trust any ACC teams right now. I’m a bit surprised that SMU got some love, although it’s absolutely deserved.

Yeah ACC is getting absolutely shit on. The ACC's records vs other conferences is pretty bad I think so I can see why they would have that way.

107

u/OpaqueNightmare Florida State Seminoles 20d ago

The Big 10 is 4-9 against Power 4 out of conference opponents while we’re 6-9, yet they have 6 teams here. The Big 12’s record is only marginally better and they have 5. Not to mention we’ve played 4 teams ranked in the top 20 in the non-conference while I’m pretty sure the most any other conference has is 1 (maybe 2). It’s ridiculous.

It’s because LSU was already #10 and dominated their game against a very bad Texas A&M, so it makes more sense to assume that Florida is very very good than it would be to drop Ole Miss below the team they just beat or drop LSU a few spots for blowing out their opponent (and actually, they DID drop a spot). LSU didn’t just magically become better than Ole Miss in one week, they just had a much more favorable matchup this weekend.

Also rank Wake, you cowards

Mizzou is the eternal gatekeeper of the top 25. Beat them, and you will be granted entry to the inner sanctum. Lose and be banished to the rankless void.

Poll inertia and preseason rankings holding value is so frustrating.

We have two P4 road wins and a top 25 win. There is no way 15 teams have a better resume at this point.

And if you’ve been blown out you shouldn’t be in the top 15 at this point, it’s too early for that.

11

u/AmidoBlack Virginia Tech Hokies 20d ago

Some BYU fans will cry that we got dropped from 9 to 10, but I think it is fair until BYU shows that it can beat a top-10 team. Now, if we somehow beat Notre Dame in three weeks and they don't give us the ratings jump treatment Florida and Ole Miss got after to-10 wins then it will be extreme bullshit.

Penn State getting fucking banished immediately for their loss, whereas it took two gross losses for A&M to drop out, is why people think this shit is biased

66

u/Bereft13 Billable Hours • Team Chaos 20d ago

Penn State's ranking WAS absurd bias. Iowa State goes 5-4 in the B12, Penn State takes their coach and half their roster, and suddenly that's a top 25 team? A&M was a playoff team last year, of course they had more credibility.

Don’t agree with Kentucky being ranked. Their “big win” over A&M is very clearly not a big win and they haven’t been impressive otherwise.

26

u/KneeDeepInRagu Alabama • Middle Tennessee 20d ago

Bizarre not to rank Kentucky last weekend but to rank them this weekend.

I thought they should have been ranked somewhere in 23-25 last weekend, and with A&M getting manhandled again I figured 'Ok maybe the AP voters actually did get it right not ranking Kentucky'

...Just in time for them get it wrong again, but in the opposite way.
